I personally think laymen should stick to Tafseer and Tilaawah. The layman can understand the Holy Qur`aan via Tafseer, not by reading a translation (which also doesn't do justice to the original Kalaam of Allah عَزَّ وَ جَل)

wAllahu ta'aalaa `a'alam.
