Here it says

Four rakat sunnah before Isha is proved from Hadith, but the Prophet (SAWS) did not pray it regularly; therefore it is Ghair Muakkadah (not necessary to offer but better):

How strong is the hadith mentioned in bold part?

sh ilyas faisal said : Hazrat Sa’eed Ibn Jubair (radhiallahu anhu) narrates that the Sahaabah (radhiallahu anhum) used to regard the performing of four rakats before the fardh of isha as mustahab [Qiyaamul-Layl of Marwazi pg.58]

any one aware of exact quote?

And muft taqi saying its not proved from hadith at all: It is true that there is no Hadith specifically that 4 Rak`aat before the obligatory prayer of 'Isha is Sunnah .

Molana Yusuf Binori said: “ I could not find any hadeeth in the hadeeth books which mentions 4 rakaah before Isha”

So is it correct to claim it as sunnah?

Asalamu alaikum I didba quick check with shaikh Google and this is what I found from Harris hammam al hanafi : ) otherwise known as shaykh Ismail Ibrahim Patel.

" Salah in genral is valid before `Ishaa.

However, to consider anything specific to be Sunnah is in fact a Bid`ah. There is no Hadith that proves anything as Sunnah before `Ishaa.

In Tahfatul Fuqaha, al-Samarqandi stated that the best opinion is that of the Zahir 'l-Riwayah, in which Imam Muhammad is that there is no supererogatory prayers before `Isha, but if one prays anything, there is no problem in that (i.e. there is no Sunnah before `Isha; just normal Nafl if one wants to do so like at any other time).

Let us analyse some evidences used by those who support Four Rak`ah Sunnah before `Isha'

1. There is a book written by Maulana Ilyas Abdul Ghani (paralysed in an accident; lived in Madinah and worked at the King Fahd Press), in which he recorded an Athar from Sa`eed bin Jubayr that the Companions used to perform four Rak`ah before `Ishaa'. This Athar has no Sanad at all! Also, it does not prove that Four Rak`ah is Sunnah.

2. There is an argument that, since Zuhr and `Asr comprise of four Rak`ah and have four Rak`ah Sunnah before them, therefore, based on Qiyas (analogy), `Isha too should have Four Rak`ah Sunnah before it. But Qiyas itself cannot prove an act to be Sunnah! Sunnah in Fiqh generally means something which the Prophet said or did! Unfortunately, this line of argument is found in some later classical texts of Hanafi Fiqh.

3. In al-Ikhtiyar (a Hanafi Fiqh book), there is a Hadith:
نقل في الاختيار عن عائشة رضي الله عنها أنه عليه الصلاة والسلام كان يصلي قبل العشاء أربعا ثم يصلي بعدها أربعا ثم يضطجع
This Hadith is baseless.

4. The Hadith of al-Bukhari etc., "Between every Adhan and Iqamah is Salah".
This is baseless according to Hanafi principles, as this Hadith according to Hanafis is firstly not acted upon between Maghrib Adhan and Iqamah, secondly the Hadith is only there to prove that Salah is generally valid between Adhan and Iqamah (rather than to prove that there are some specific Sunnah), and thirdly there is no specification from this Hadith that there are FOUR Rak`ah Sunnah before `Isha, which requires extra evidence."

some azaadville graduates told me that maulana fazlur-rahman azmi hafezahullah explained to them that it is not from hadith, hanafi fuqaha looking at other salah used qiyas to say there are 4 rakats that should be prayed before isha. but some awaam stress on it thinking it be sunnah.

so many "sunnats" exist that people will not believe are not actually sunnah. wearing topi while eating, not drinking water after eating, walking after eating, loud ijtimai dua after fardh salah, fatima tasbeeh before sunnah rakats (should be after), etc.

Its not the awam who stress on it , rather the awwam were taught that they are 17 rakats of esha, and 4 of those rakats are to be performed before the fard as suna ghair muakada . Also isn't there a diference of opinion as to whether it is preferable to say the tasbeeh before or after the salah?

i and most people had/have no idea that there is a difference of opinion. only that you should be seated after fardh, do your tasbih, then pray sunnah.

some Ulama explained to me that the sunnah is to finish your salah (all of it, fardh and sunnah) the do your tasbeeh. after fardh, you immediately recite the important masnoon duas though.

however, some fuqaha have said that one should recite his tasbeeh before the sunnah rakats if he is afraid of leaving right after the sunnah because he is too lazy/distracted to recite his tasbeeh.
