Shaykh
Shu'ayb Desai (Imaam of Masjid Umar, Sheffield) who outlined some of the
major problems in the Muslim community;

inactivity, fear of the authority
and silencing the pulpits of the masjids in guiding the congregation in
these testing times.
Not only has this created Muslims to over-react but
their efforts have not been focused and prioritised.
The function of the
Masjid is to guide and advise the community in all affairs concerning
Muslims everywhere.

slightly reworded from the original post

To begin with
our primary concern should be our faith and our actions.
there are two big weaknesses in human beings, lack of thought in words and lack of thought in actions- without the concern of the consequences of either

Actions have the power to benefit and harm which is obvious but the power of words to benefit and harm is usually less apparent but equally if not more beneficial or harmful.
the internet, and the constant use of terms like grooming , indoctrination, extremism etc now do prove the power of rhetoric to influence the masses leading to the rise of islamaphobia.

The qurans first word "iqra" to read obviously states the importance of the written word, because from the understanding of written words come actions.but we also have to understand and appreciate how different cultures and peoples use of language slang, etc. differs.so our methods and terminology in communication should bear these nuances in mind.

quranic texts must be understood and propogated in context and laypeople must not be allowed to propagate these holy texts out of context.we have already seen the harms of this unfortunately time and again .thus the ignorant minority must be challenged

Also Now is not the time to give simple answers or cliche's to the very complex problems we have nor is it the time for untrained and inexperienced people to get involved in matters in which they are not capable and competent.

it is also not the time to be defensive, insular or closed. Truly a time of humility, critical thinking and self reflection is upon us like never before. Arrogance and pride harm us in both our relationship with Allah and in our relationship with our neighbours

.Our relationship with Allah taala takes priority over everything but our relationship with allah taalas creation also affects our relationship with Allah taala, these two ideas cannot be separated. a good muslim must be a good neighbour, a good father, a good citizen etc.

The overall message of huzoor (saws) was of to be a person of good character. The muhaditheen have approximated that 75% of islam is good conduct if not more ,with 25% in matters of worship fasting, salah, hajj etc.whuch is a little known fact thus a less practiced upon principle.

Islam spread by good character, islam will be kept safe by good character, and we muslims must accept and propagate these facts and remain with good character even in the most challenging circumstances as is the sunnah of our dear beloved prophet Muhammad .pbuh.

To add,the Refinement of our character, our worship, our relationship with allah taala and with all fellow creations must be in a constant state of improvement. We must be in a process of improvement and self reformation and development in our spiritual life and our social life. If you are the same person you were five or 10 years ago, you should be concerned as to why there has been no improvement in your social conduct, and your relationship with Allah taala

Perfect your relationship with allah taala on a deep level, learn your deen on a deep level practice and propagate an enlightened level of morals and ethics and you will find inshallah all your social matters will become correct

. As the world is changing at a rapid rate, be aware of current social issues and about how to deal with them and be involved in all matters where you can benefit the greater society, this means not just in muslim issues but in all issues affecting the whole of mankind.

remember, most of us can only realistically work on a local level. Though our concerns are global we must learn to prioritize and prioritizing is a key word which really needs to be discussed. Unfortunately over focus on foreign affairs and foreign policy seems to be part of the problem. Whilst forgetting or misprioritizing personal and local concerns

equally ,relying on conspiracy theories and a victim mentality leaves us void of any sense of responsibility and our own errors in our day to day living.

we are also forgetting allah taala with regards to blaming powers and nations etc ,when ultimately a muslims heart must only be filled with the awe and power of allah taala alone.

we need to prepare and train individuals who will be capable of countering terrorist preachers , their pro terrorism baseless arguments and hate speech and should not be afraid of naming and shaming these individuals and groups in our counter narrative in order to protect our mainstream muslims and fellow citizens.

though the term "moderate muslim" has been used i would prefer to use the term excellent muslim, as no one likes to go to a moderately decent doctor but an excellent doctor.

Seperate departments and workshops must be prepared to approach the media, universities, college's, youth club's etc for outreach ,community cohesion and bridge building .
Mosques themselves must be integral in this process, and become the base's for the solution to the issues of today.
Awkward topics must be discussed and rather than just criticizing anti terror legislation our own proposals must be formulated with practical implementation.
there must also be an effort to reduce the us and them mentality which is part of the terrorist narrative and strategy.. mosque imams and teachers must be of high standards and able, not just of book knowledge but real world knowledge and experience.

we must check and scrutinize individuals in positions of responsibility to safeguard the children who are our future.
after an incident or a tragedy, appoint specific skilled people to approach the media if need be without cliched responses and without responses which may really be of no benefit.this does not necessarily mean the imam or a scholar as allah taala has made different individuals for different fields and tasks in life.
allowing skilled and experienced individuals to represent the community must be accepted and allowed
thus a need to accept the concept of "division of labour" .

we must also intelligently and articulately challenge biased and erroneous media reports.teams of volunteers must be trained and be ever vigilant especially during the aftermath of an incident
instantly emailing newspapers and tv channels when allegations and rumours are portrayed as facts including disproportionate reporting and exaggerations.

to put it frankly any individual who is untrained or inexperienced or even ill prepared should not approach cameras, interviewers and other media including online social media without consulting the "team" .know your remit and remember one minor error in phrasing and context cannot be deleted or rewound.

Parenting is a skill which needs to be developed. Libraries have shelf upon shelf of self help books, with regards to this matter, where are our self help books and libraries? we must Prioritise our spending with the needs of the current situation in mind.once again prioritizing local needs in relation to foreign matters. Some may find this unpalatable but an analysis of our situation today should lead us to prioritize our wealth and energies more wisely.

legal and effective measures with practical and realistic proposals must be brought forward by the community to engage with the youth who are in need guidance and support.develop and update your knowledge of modern technology to control internet access and manage the over usage of smartphones tablets etc in childrens hands

realise that even the smallest thing like how one parks his car in the supermarket is also a form or dawah or disgrace.patience in a queue.saying hello and thank you.is also worship

Take criticism as a bitter medicine as the fear of muslims is not always irrational in some isolated cases and total defensiveness and the denial of some of our issues has to be addressed and tackled ultimately. Self righteousness has to be eradicated and our introspection increased

The greatest resistance is to resist evil desires, the greatest hijrah is to travel from sin to good and let us all raise our standards in all matters striving for excellence and inclusion and global benefit

despite the greater situation of the ummah we must always be in a condition of thanks to allah taala and constantly thrive to perfect our worship and character..thus tazkiyah ie self improvement is a constant effort

the issue of freedom of speech and the concept of ummah must be explained and conveyed to our neighbours from an islamic perspective with our sensitivities and limitatons on this matter explained.
Libel and defamation laws prove there is no such thing as total freedom of speech

.obeying the law of the land must be part of our rhetoric as it is already part of the quran and under no circumstance must any unislamic and illegal act be given even an iota of justification or understanding.

human rights as well as rights of all creation is already agreed upon when one recites the shahadah.
the constant need or pressure to "condemn or apologise" when unfortunate incidents occur is something that needs addressing as the whole ummah is not responsible for the atrocities of a few and the belief in the kalimah already includes condemnation of all illegal immoral and inhumane beliefs and actions.

we have to strive to remove our labels and divisions and be as one,all muslims all humans all precious

I have emailed this to many organisations and I truly believe the majority of Muslim individuals including organisations including ulema fall short in many ways with regards to the knowhow of dealing in such matters.and I declare this openly to them in person

Good article Bro Ahmed; but to give constructive feedback I think it should be categorised dealing with each issue seperatley and what practical steps can be taken.

That is

(1) Engaging and Countering the Media.
(2) Countering the Khwarij.
(3) Instilling a sense of optimism amongst muslims.
(4) Effective Dawah to non-muslims and Tabligh to muslims.
(5) Tazkiyah.
(6) Introspection, and need for each one of us to be better Ambassadors for our religion.
(7) Service towards humanity especially in towns anmd neighbourhoods were we live.

I also think trying to cover too many different areas will go beyond sleepless nights, but feelings of being overwhelmed and despair and might lead to emotional burn out...Probably better to focus on areas that you are strong in. ..Looking at all your recent posts you seem to be trying to right all the wrongs of the world in one fell swoop.

Probably better to right the wrongs within ones own capacity, and offer support to individuals and groups who are specialist in areas outside that capacity.

May Allah reward you for all the efforts you are making, (I am just basing my opinions on what I have seen of other Brothers who tried to take on too much and which eventually led to burnout), May Allah grant you barakah in all your works and make all the tasks easy for you ameen.

Sincerity to [all] people [of the world] is that [the seeker] does not keep relations with the people for his/her own motives [but instead is selfless towards them and performs selfless duty to them] and refrains from selfishness.

But instead should dedicate himself/herself for the good (welfare) of [all] the people [of the world], however the condition is that, this welfare should be in accordance with the Shari’ah (the Divine laws).

‘And He is sufficient for me and He is the best Helper.’

[Therefore, I adopted complete reliance on Allah in every matter.]”

our mosques and institutes need to utilise individuals of different skills and experiences outside of the cliques and clubs which exist

these cliques do themselves a major disservice not to mention to the wider community by not being inclusive of other models ideas and individuals.the "we know it all" attitude is actually an arrogant and unislamic attitude.yet it does prevail.

self interest and a group survival strategy shows lack of compassion yet when the storms come the masses are ordered to help and pray for these hidden and often unapproachable individuals and old mens clubs

living in a different country in very challenging times it is obvious that old models ,ideas and methods are now defunct and in fact may even be illegal .not to say that illegal ideas and methods were proselytized previously.

fixed positions and a lack of adaptibility will continue to harm us and for some cliques and individuals may even lead to irrelevance or a decline in their influence

lack of foresight and an inability to strategise and be proactive has led some to become victims of circumstance.
this has led as brother maripat says far more eloquently for others to enroach upon our own personal space.
then when this has happened there has been an ineffective even possibly counterproductive over reaction.

reactions must also be gauged and formulated by deep thinking, research and inclusion.NOT rushed and emotional
and possibly not by the very cliques and individuals which may have caused the problems in the first place(allegedly)

AND ALLAH KNOWS BEST
