Bismillah

As-salamu alaykum,

I thought it would be nice to hear the experience students have with the various online academies and institutes - those offering Alim based courses as well as shorter ones.

I'm thinking of institutes like:

Avicenna Academy
Cambridge Islamic College
Cordoba Academy
Darul Ilm Birmingham
Darul Uloom Online
eAlim
Ilm Essentials
Madina Institute
Meem Institute
Qibla (formerly SunniPath)
Rayyan Institute
SeekersHub
Suyuti Institute
Tazkiyah Academy
ZamZam Academy

...and others

Questions one could answer:

  • Do you recommend any of them - and if so, why?
  • Which one would you consider the best alternative to "onsite studies" (for those who cannot travel and have no local scholars)?

P.S. Let's not turn this into a "this and that institute is deviant!" type thread - one can open a separate thread for that if needed.

Wa alaikum assalam warehmatullah wabarakatuh
Don't know about all of them. Some like noorulilm, zaynab academy etc, run by khulufa of Hazrat Sheikh Zulfiqar Naqshbandi db, are great for sisters. They can learn at their home.

But for men: they should go to some Madrasa physically, as learning on internet will not have such noor as sitting physically in the company of Ahlullah.

That almost goes without saying - meaning that's the ideal. But in some areas no young men want to study and those who do want to study have families and jobs, so cannot relocate. In those cases I find online studies an acceptable solution. Like "tayammum" in stead of wudu.

That's why I wrote: "for those who cannot travel and have no local scholars"

The alternative is they give up and let the Salafis and "Rizvis" get all the young people.

Wasalam

I don't think anyone can give you an exact answer, as I don't think anyone here has studied from all them institutes to make a fair judgement

- Some are very popular, meaning well known compared to others. Yes seeking ilm is essential for every muslim. I recommend you check all of them and see which one suits you. You might be a person who likes a bit of a mixture, meaning studying under different scholars, different subjects etc, or you might like one run by one particular scholar whose style of teaching you like and find easy to understand and enjoy listening to. Prices and timings will also play a part in which institution you choose.

- It depends what you're exactly looking for to be honest, apologies for the generic answer to a generic reply. But this is a subjective thing if I'm honest and will vary from person to person.

Maybe if you could nail it to a certain institution or two and the course your looking to do, the brothers could help you out. However from what I've learnt about avicenna academy from this forum I would erase that from your list, I won't go into it here as you can find said thread on the forum. However learning authentic ilm from authentic ulema with a sound understanding is crucial.

MaY Allah accept us all to be students of knowledge as that is a blessing in itself.

Hope that helps

The rest Allah knows best

Jazakum Allahu khayran. Will look for the thread on Avicenna Ac. inshaAllah.

If I had to make the list shorter it would probably be this (based on programmes offered, timings and curriculum etc.) - I've already studied the fard 'ayn so am looking for a more high level programme (Alim type or similar):

Cordoba Academy
Darul Ilm B'ham
Darul Uloom Online
Tazkiyah Academy
(Mufti Kamaluddin Ahmed teaches there)

Tazkiyah Academy are starting up a free alim online course for men, I think the classes start next month on the 5th according to the leaflets I've seen floating about online and offline. So if you or anyone else reading this is interested now would be the best time to register. Two muftis from South Africa will be teaching it or are part of the team. However the last 1/2 years of the course they will expect you to attend in person either here in UK/South Africa. Brilliant opportunity for university students and working professionals who have families and other commitments etc

Cordoba Academy is also brilliant, but as far as I know they do not run any alim class. However there is always a variety of advanced courses, not to cheap as well, plus a variety of different teachers, Shaykh Daniel is good and everyone I know who have studied under Cordoba had nothing but praise for the institute.

I don't know enough about the other two to comment. However with any of these above two institutes your in good hands. The others can comment on the others.

Mashallah interesting discussion. I think brother abu salma has hit the nail on the head. The one's he has mentioned are the best one's around though I don't know much about the last two but anything usually associated with mufti kamaludeen db would usually be good. The first 2 course providers mentioend;

1. Cambridge
2. Corodoba

I have not studied with any of them but I know some people who have. From what I gather cambridge has a big focus on arabic whilst Cordoba seems to have a lot of interesting courses on offer. So I guess one could benefit from both places. The thing that one needs to be careful about with Cambridge is that the views of akram nadwi are not in line with a lot of scholars and therefore one must be careful but I have seen some people take the Cambridge course and excel. I think Abu Salma you take the course? So benefit from both places but don't ever fall for the modernists and their disregard for sunnah.

If you understand URDU, then eMahad is another option. If I was to chose, I would have gone with eMahad.

And another point is that, those who know Urdu, they should prefer Urdu institutes over English.
Everyone knows the reason......

Assalamu alaykum!

Darul Ilm Birmingham is amongst the best if you ask me; They teach in a traditional way, with small classes and very good interaction between teacher and students. Most of the other online institutes (Cambridge, etc) have big classes and thus a student will have big difficulty getting the nisbat with the ustadhs, as well as improving his/her knowledge.

Another good thing with Darul Ilm Birmingham is that their curriculum is the best and they have very learned teachers, such as Mufti Mohammed Tosir Miah damatbarakatuhum.

That's my advice Akh.

Wassalam

Wa alaykum us-salam brother,

Jazakum Allahu khayran.

I know three brothers who are studying the online version of the Darul Ilm course. From what I hear it's very good. The only problem is that their timings don't work well for my schedule.

This post has been reported. It could be due to breaking rules or something as simple as bad use of bbcodes which breaks the page format. We will attend to this soon.
