Britain is too “passively tolerant” and should not leave people to live their lives as they please just because they obey the law, David Cameron has said.

At the National Security Council today Mr Cameron unveiled a series of measures that he said would crack down on people holding minority “extremist” views that differed from Britain’s consensus.

“For too long, we have been a passively tolerant society, saying to our citizens 'as long as you obey the law, we will leave you alone',” he said.“It's often meant we have stood neutral between different values. And that's helped foster a narrative of extremism and grievance.”

Speaking on BBC Radio 4 today, however, the Home Secretary Theresa May said that tolerance and rule of law were ‘British values’.

“[The measures are part of a] bigger picture, a strategy which will also have as a key part of it actually promoting our British values, our values of democracy, rule of law, tolerance and acceptance of different faiths,” she said.

What does five more years of the Tories mean for Britain?

She said the measures would focus on “seeking to undermine the very values that make us a great country to live in”.

Ms May first set out the proposals presented by Mr Cameron before the general election but was prevented from bringing them forward by the Liberal Democrats.

The package of powers, first proposed in March, would allow courts to force a person to send their tweets and Facebook posts to the police for approval.

Ofcom will have new powers to pressurise broadcasters which show content deemed “extreme” while the Charity Commission would be mandated to scrutinise charities who “misappropriate funds”.

The Prime Minister's comments about tolerance were met with criticism on social media.

This is like what I read in history, Muslims of sub continent migrated to Afghanistan, and the sudden influx was unwelcoming. (pre partition event)

South America is a Tolerant but language and Islam is an issue because not many Muslims. South Africa sounds like a very good opinion BUT these are all primarily Non-Muslim countries (just like UK)

Brother I would agree with you that probably on the scheme of things UK is still the best place for a Muslim. The problem is the trend is very worrying. I would at least suggest the following to our Muslim brothers.
1. Those of Indopak origin should get a NOI card or another origin card so they can travel to their ethnic country if something seriously bad happens ALLAH forbid
2. Muslims should try and get hold of other nationalities if possible
3. Get some qualifications under your belt so ‘hijrah’ if and when becomes easier. On the top of my head teaching English seems to be an easy way of getting out of the country so do CELTA and a PGCE etc in English if you can
4. Make loads of dua to ALLAH. The headlines are scary and scary by the day. Hating Islam and Muslims has become mainstream. The next 30-50 years are critical for Western Muslims. It seems like either make or brake

The truth is many foreigners here are now third/fourth generation here, even if they wanted to go elsewhere they can't and the ones who do a majority of them come back after a little while.

As Muslims we need to establish ourselves here and show what really Islam is about, what being a Muslim really means, we can't just pack up and go, we need to come together and stand up and defend our rights as much as we can, each one of us can make a positive contribution to society, question is do we? And when our rights get trampled over we cry wolf.

No one will protect the Muslims unless the Muslims don't do it ourselves, sadly to many people just like to sit back and be a silent observer, spectator in each and everything, work is being done but more is needed.

Islam is the most misinterpreted religion in the West according to Shaykh Musa Al Shareef and he's correct, sadly today Muslims are known for the wrong things today and only 'we' can change the image portrayed by media etc and no one else.

Success is in complete deen, most of the Ummah still doesn't pray 5 times, sahaaba were less in number, lacked in other departments too, but they were number one in deen, and the a akhirah meant more. Today we have Muslims leaving Islam all over the place. If you got no emaan you got nothing, world is a temporary abode anyway and the suffering etc will pass one day.

Who failed them? Who failed us? We ourselves whilst the solution has always been in front of us.

UK most definitely is a great place for the Muslim community. Those not in the UK will not see it and those in the wrong field will also not see it.

The UK is a great place considering how others live and practice their Deen.

Yes the UK is tolerant and they need to stop being tolerant with those who break the law and go against the teachings of Islam.

The UK shouldn't allow false beliefs to spread among people who see the fake Islam, Britain shouldn't tolerate that. Let the people see what the media doesn't show them, let them see us and our Islam, let them interfere with the lives of those messing with our religion

Assalamu alaykum,

For how long will Britian remain "a better place for us to practice our deen"?

With the recent reports of the tories wanting to scrap the Human Rights, and replace them with "British Rights", things are not looking very bright. Will we continue sitting in the dark, gloating that Britian is better for our deen, until it all hits us in the face?

What will we do if tommorow we don't have a right to wear niqab/hijab, to withdraw our children from mixed swimming classes, to have our madrassahs?

What "Rights" will we exactly be fighting for when the new British Rights are only for certain sections of the community? We won't have any "rights".

The time for prepartaion is now. There won't be time soon. We have to discuss and lay out our options now. If we are going to to stay, then discuss how/what we are going to do when Human Rights are scrapped. We will get demolished here in the UK left, right and centre, bit by bit.

Allah knows best, but it seems that things will get polarised, that is there will be 2 groups of Muslims, one group that will have all but lost their deen, probably only turning up for Eid, if that. The other group are those who will want to live in accordance with the sunnah, but things will get just too difficult for them to do that in the UK, so they will seek options for getting out. These "in-betweener" Muslims will slowly start dying out.
