It's the first one that's really adamant he's Hanafi, though Mufti Menk himself has never confirmed what madhab he follows.

He's always kept quiet about this, and this seems to irk many people.

Very good point brother. I think it's a personal choice to divulge whether you follow a madhab. If that burns a few people up then it's best to remain quiet, and to avoid stirring fitna.

Too many people start barking just because a distinguished a scholar chooses not to broadcast to the globe his aqeedah or madhab. Yet they refuse to overlook the goodness of what he's achieved.

Enquiry politely by all means, if he refuses to answer then part ways with goodness.

Mufti menk is Bharuchi, he did his iftaa at kantharia under marhoom mufti Ismail bhadkodra sahb after studying in makkah. His father is maulana musa. Mufti sahb doesn't talk about madhab or deoband because his audience is of mixed backgrounds

To be fair, the above reasoning does not seem satisfactory. I mean he doesnt talk about madhaahib because he talks to ppl of diverse background kind of suggest that people talking to only hanafi talk about madhahib. Whereas they are the ones who wouldnt need to since everyone would know that we are listening to Hanafi understanding.

The reason someone would doubt or be concerned if someone is Hanafi or Salafi is because if he anticipates some harm to the opposite group etc.

In summary : (Some) salafis say Mufti Menk is deobandi because he doesn't comment on "Where is Allah" and (some) Deobandis say Mufti Menk is salafi because he doesn't say which madhab he follows. : )

The situation is not very clean and I am unable to provide facts due to confidentiality issues. I will say 2 things which should be sufficient for people to make up their minds:

  1. 100%: Shaykh (Mufti) Menk (HA), his father, wife and family and all Hanafees
  2. GUESS & DEDUCTION! Shaykh (Mufti) Menk (HA) is likely not of the opinion that Taqleed Shaksi is Waajib
