Allamah Tahir Bin Abdir Rasheed Bukhari (Rahmatullahi Alaihi) has written than a father should not use words of direct order when asking his son to do something. Instead, a father should say, "If you do such or such thing, it would be nice."
That way if the son does not do it for any reason, he would be saved from 'Uqooqul Walidayn" (Disobedience to parents) which is a major sin. In a direct order he would be sinful whereas if the second method was used, he would be saved from this.
