Prophet 'Isa (Jesus) عليه السلام once met Prophet Yahya (John) عليه السلام. 'Isa عليه السلام would smile a lot while Yahya عليه السلام would cry alot.

'Isa عليه السلام asked, "O Yahya, have you lost hope in the mercy of Allah to such an extent that your crying does not cease?"

Yahya عليه السلام responded, "O Isa, do you feel so safe from the wrath of Allah that you smile all the time?"

After a while, an angel appeared to them and said, "Allah has commanded me to come to you and explain His verdict regarding your respective conditions. O Isa, remain smiling in public, but in seclusion cry like Yahya. And, O Yahya, in privacy continue shedding tears, but in public smile with others. It should not become such that people see a Prophet of Allah in tears all the time. They would lose hope in His mercy when they see you like this." [Jawahir Pare, vol 2, p168]
