Biyazid Bustami رحمه الله was the sage of his age. His wisdom in winning over the hearts of men was extraordinary. One night, while returning from the cemetery, he ran into a young man who was playing his lute. In anguish, Biyazid immediately recited,

لا حول ولا قوة إلا بالله العلي العظيم

"There is no power or might except from Allah, the Elevated, the Great."

The young man was intoxicated and did not realise who it was. In his stupor, he lifted his lute and struck the saint upon his head so severely that the lute was shattered. Bayazid رحمه الله bore the pain patiently and quietly returned home.

The next morning, he summoned one of his disciples and requested him to find out the price of a lute. When he was informed, he wrapped the sum of money equivalent to the value of a lute in a cloth and prepared a plate of sweetmeats. He ordered a disciple to deliver these to the young man and instructed, "Say to the young man that Bayazid begs his pardon and asks him to accept this sum of money as compensation for his broken lute. Also request him to eat the sweetmeats to remove the sorrow from his heart regarding the broken lute and the episode of the night before."

When the young man realised what had actually transpired, he was overcome with embarrassment. He came to meet Bayazid رحمه الله and apologised profusely.
