Our pious predecessors made many sacrifices and undertook many tirelesss journeys and hardships just to acquire knowledge and spread it. Today these heartfelt efforts and sacrifices are not topics which are much discussed. Fact is, without knowing these sacrifices we will never know how to acquire knowledge whilst reaping its full benefits. We will never appreciate the books of ahadeeth nor realise the true seekers life accomplishments. This thread will highlight many aspects of acquiring knowledge insha'allah. Feel free to add to this so many can benefit.

Imam muslim narrates from Yahya ibne abee katheer:
"knowledge cannot be acquired along with physical
comfort."
We can see how true this Is by looking at the life sacrifices of Imam Bukhari.
Imam bukhari sacrifised everything to acquire the knowledge of hadeeth. There was no such thing as rest on working days and he soent many sleepless nights.
Muhammad ibne abee haatim related:
" Everytime i travelled with imam bukhari for the sake of hadeeth we would often sleep in the same room. I would see him wake up every 15-20 mins in one night. Everytime he woke up he would light the candle with a flint, make some mark on a certain hadeeth and then sleep."

During the works of one one of the biggest and authentic kitabs, 'bukhari shareef', imam bukhari would perform wudhu, pray two rakaats asking help from allah then would write one hadeeth. Subhanallah imam bukhari did this before writting a single hadeeth and likewise continued to do this until the entire kitab was written. This is true etiquette and respect of handling hadeeth.

Imam muslim, another great scholar sold his life to the works of ahadeeth and til the very last breath was in search of islamic knowledge.
The Death Of Imam Muslim:
At night imam muslim was sat in a gathering in which someone mentiOned a hadeeth imam muslim was unaware of. He returned home to his book of ahadeeth and began searching for this hadeeth. As not to be disturbed he requested that no one was to enter his room nor speak to him. He remained awake all night in search of this hadeeth. Imam muslim received a basket of dates which he subconciously began eating simultaneously. In the morning imam muslim found the hadeeth he was looking for..but soon after then passed away. Many narrate that his death was caused by the consumption of too many dates. He was so engrossed in searching for a single hadeeth he didnt realise he had consume too many dates!

Imam Abu Haneefa started his persuit of knowledge at a very tender age. Allah accepted him and made him amongst the strongest of scholars to such an extent that today the young and the old have all at least mentioned his day and know something about him. He made his mark in the history of jurispudance solely because of his understanding, open mindedness, sincerity and a great thirst for the fountain of knowledge. Knowledge can only br attained through commitment, and this is what we see in the lives of our great scholars.

There are a great many lessons we can attain from looking at the true scholars. Just having knowledge is not enough. Imam bukhari would act upon the sunnah of the prophet to precise detail, Imam Shafi'ee refrianed from sins to the absolute point where even we wouldnt acknowledge those things as a sin. These are just a few examples however the list goes on.

Imam bukhari:
In spite of inheriting alot of ,omey and being a very successful buisness man, he spent every penny on hadeeth to the extent that once he was forced to sell his own clothes.
It is related that once imam bukhari hadnt attended the hadeeth circle for many days. His collegues were surprised at his absemce as he was very punctual. So they went to visit him and found imam bukhari residing in his home with barely anything covering him.
Imam bukhari had sold his clothes in exchange for his hadeeth circles. His collegues collected money for him and purchased some clothing.
