A wealthy couple were seated, ready to eat from a pot of roasted chicken, when a beggar arrived at their door. The husband went out and chased him away using harsh words. It so happened, that the husband's condition deteriorated soon thereafter, and he lost all his possessions and wealth. He even divorced his wife, who then married another man.

The new couple were seated one day, about to begin eating from some roasted chicken before them, when they heard a beggar knock at the door.

The man said to his wife, 'Present this chicken to him.'

She went out to hand him the chicken, but returned with tears in her eyes.

Her husband asked why she was crying, and she replied, 'That beggar was once my husband,' and she related the incident when her previous husband had scolded a beggar who had knocked at their door.

Her husband listened to her story with interest and exclaimed, 'By Allaah, I was that very same beggar.'

'Say: "O Allah! Possessor of the kingdom, You give the kingdom to whom You will, and You take the kingdom from whom You will, and You endue with honour whom You will, and You humiliate whom You will. In Your Hand is the good. Verily, You are Able to do all things."' (3:26)
