Well, i remember meeting a white southern brother 20 years back at a tableegh ijtimaah out in baltimore. It was amazing to see that this brother's beard was so long that it reached his belt line. He got the most attention like a celebrity. It's a big job to maintain a beard like that. Is it ok to grow it that long?

I have very small beard. Small in the sense that curly hairs and it's not thick. Also i have very slow hair growth.

My own brother is nearly 18 still have not got beared, but got a random coarse long hair with the rest of smooth face. Weird!

There was a Sahabi who had a couple of hair strands on his face and every time the Prophet saw him, he (saw) would smile at him. One day this sahabi cut his hair off because he thought the Prophet was laughing at his beard. When the Prophet met him, he asked why he did that and the sahabi explained.

Upon hearing that, the Prophet (saw) told him the every time I saw you, I would see a couple of angels swinging in your beard and so I would smile. (not exact words of narration). The sahabi was so upset about it.

I've heard this hadith before, but never found a reference for it. Even now I searched for a reference and couldn't find one. In fact, I've read a deoband fatwa stating that there is no basis in Quran or Sunnah to believe that angels interact with the beard.

Kindly provide a reference for this Hadith.

This is besides the fact that out of the many fatwas talking about the obligation and virtues of the beard, I haven't even seen one which uses this Hadith.

Again, just a doubt, so correct me if im wrong.

Fatwa Date : Rabee' Al-Awwal 5, 1427 / 4-4-2006

Question

Is there a Hadeeth which talks about a person who had ONLY one strand of hair as his beard, to which an Angel was hanging, and our Prophet smiled at it? Please advice.

Answer


All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger. We ask Allaah to exalt his mention as well as that of his family and all his companions.


After having searched the narration you are asking about, we neither found it in the available books of Prophetic narrations nor in the books of known scholars.

Allaah Knows best.
