Why a Woman can't marry more than one Husband?

In a delightful report about how Imam Abu Hanifa received his name (his original name was Numan bin Thabit bin Zuta bin Mah), an account of why the wife is forbidden to take more than one husband is recounted. 'Abu Hanifa' is an unusual name because it means 'the father of Hanifah', and Hanifah was his daughter. It was not the custom in those days to do this. Normally, the name would be 'the father of the name of a son.' How this came about is quite edifying.

One day Imam Abu Hanifa was asked a question that, for the first time in his illustrious career, he was unable to answer. The question was, "Why were women forbidden to marry more than one husband at a time?"

To make a long story short, Abu Hanifa's daughter said that she knew the answer and would solve this question if her father would make a promise to her that if she succeeded in solving this problem, he would then assure her a place in history. Abu Hanifa agreed.

So she gathered a group of women together and gave each of them a cup. Then she brought in a large bowl of milk and asked each of them to dip their cups in the milk and to fill their cups. They did so. She then asked them to pour back the milk into the bowl. They did this too. She then asked them to re-fill their cups taking back only their own milk that they had poured into the bowl.

This, obviously, was impossible to do. Hanifah had clearly demonstrated the kind of predicament that would be created if a woman had several husbands. With more than one husband, if she were to become pregnant, she would have exceptional difficulties determining who the actual father was? Identifying parentage and lineage would then be insurmountable for the offspring. Imam Abu Hanifa was so pleased with her answer that he took the name 'Abu Hanifa', 'the father of Hanifah', so his daughter did indeed earn a place in history.

From my understanding, Imam Abu Hanifa had Only one Child, Hammad bin Nu'man bin Thabit.

Allahu Allum.

Asslamo Allaikum Aapa,

Its a pretty rude story anyways. In Dawah you can say.

1) Allah (SWT) has given permission for a man to take multiple wives but NOT OBLIGATED.

2) If a woman decides to marry a man with an existing wife and the matter is agreed between them then what's the problem? They are Adults and they have considered the matter and decided. Typical Western mind places such importance on sexuality that it views this matter in the light of sexuality when in actual fact this is about "taking care of women" and being responsible i.e. a man has to provide for her, take care of her etc and sexuality is the least of the matter.

3) In contemporay Western society a man sleeps around or gets a Mistress despite having a wife and he is thought to be a "player" but when he takes a 2nd wife gives his respect vows to take care of her, tries his best to look after her he gets condemned! Which method is fair for a woman? Being a mistress and being played around with or being taken a 2nd wife?

Ask any woman with a fair mind?

4) If the 2nd wife is not being taken care of she HAS THE RIGHT to apply and get her marraige annuled.

All in all this shows BEAUTY of ISLAM.

Practically less then 1% of Muslim men either sleep around (illegally) or take a 2nd wife (Islamically legall) i.e. 99% of them have one wife and remain faithful to her.

While 1 in 4 Western men CHEAT at some point in their life.

So he is living a moral and upright life? Muslim men or Western men?

Which is better and fairer system? Islam which gives women rights and protects them legally and gives her legal rights to get out of this marriage OR Western law which relegates her to a Mistress and she simply gets toyed with, and has no rights BEFORE, DURING and AFTER being a Mistress?

In Islam no man is OBLIGATED to have a 2nd wife.

In Islam no woman is OBLIGATED to become a 2nd wife.

Islam treats them like Adults and gives them choice but when the woman makes that choice her rights are protected and when she sees that she is not being taken care of and man is not being responsible, she can get the marriage annuled.

wa 'alaykumus salaam
beshak, i would not at all disagree with your points about the beauty of islam and the wisdom behind each and every command...especially regarding women. Nowhere in history have women been shown the consideration which Islam has..

However i wouldn't agree that its a "rude" story. If it had been true it would be quite a story to repeat i.e. everyone knows the genius of Imam abu hanifah and to think his daughter, a woman after all, is bestowed in a similar way is quite inspiring.

Actually recently i came across an explanation behind the wisdom of "halala" (not sure if the word is spelt correctly) after 3 talaks take place and why this procedure has to be followed. Its as if Allah ta'ala is saying to the woman who has been divorced thrice.."O my bandi, why do you want to go back to this man who does not respect you, who thinks nothing of you. Here, I give you a chance to marry another person and if he is decent and shows you respect then be happy with him"!!

sooo beautiful..If only every Muslimah (who is bent on imitating the west) and every non muslim woman could see just what status Allah ta'ala has granted women

I kind of agree with the above two comments. I always say to an angry wife, "you women always ask for divorce over petty issues, you have no patience, anger is dominant, shak prevails, etc etc, but do you know why you cant give a divorce like the way a man can."

A man understands that if he divorces you, he can only get you back after another man has......And he cant handle the thought of that.

Similarly, a woman can not have more than one husband, i gues for the same reason.

W-Salam,

I had a very interesting conversation with Ulama in Yorkshire because "Halala" has never made any sense to me i.e. why does the women get punished for husband's mistake?

The matter was clarified by Ulama-e-Kiraam and it is exactly how you have explained.

Jazakullah Khairun
