Anger Management in Islam: A Hole in the Fence, Anger (Ghadab), Bad Temper, Human Vices

There once was a little boy who had a bad temper (anger). His Father gave him a bag of nails and told him that every time he lost his temper and get angry, he must hammer a nail into the back of the fence.

The first day the little boy had driven 37 nails into the fence. Over the next few weeks, as he learned to control his anger, the number of nails hammered daily gradually dwindled down.

Little boy discovered it was easier to hold his temper (anger) than to drive those nails into the fence...

Finally the day came when the little boy did not lose his temper (anger) at all. He told his father about it and the father suggested that the little boy now pull out one nail for each day that he was able to hold his temper (anger). The day passed and the little boy was finally able to tell his father that all the nails were gone.

The father took his little boy by the hand and led him to the fence. He said, "You have done well, my son, but look at the holes in the fence.

The fence will never be the same. When you say things in anger, they leave a scar just like this one. You can put a knife in a man and draw it out. It won't matter how many times you say I'm sorry, the wound is still there."

Our Holy prophet (saw) mentions the tongue before the hand. As everybody knows, the 'wounds' caused by the tongue are deeper and more hurtful than those caused by the hand. Besides, one is often prepared to strike more readily, easily and more frequently with one's tongue than with the hand. Slandering, backbiting, reproaching and other similar ways of hurting people are commoner and more difficult to avoid than hurt done by the hand. Further, if a person can refrain from hurting with the tongue, he can more easily refrain from the assaults by the hand. Again, defending oneself against physical assaults is, in most cases, easier than against verbal assaults of, in particular, backbiting and slandering. So, a true Muslim always restrains his tongue as well as his hand from hurting others.

Short Temper (Shaikh Munajid, Salafi)

A person may complain: “I get very angry very quickly. If there is the slightest provocation, I quickly explode and start to break things, swear, curse and issue threats of divorce. This problem has caused me so much embarrassment, and has made most people hate me, even my wife and children and closest friends. What can I do to rid myself of this awful disease and extinguish this devilish fire?”

Anger is a tendency that comes from the Shaytaan. Only Allaah knows how much evil and sin results from it. Hence Islam has a great deal to say about this negative characteristic and the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) described remedies for ridding oneself of this problem and limiting its effects. These include the following:

Seeking refuge with Allaah from the Shaytaan. Sulaymaan ibn Sard said: “I was sitting with the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him), and there were two men swearing at one another. One of them was red in the face and the veins of his neck were standing out. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: ‘I know a word which, if only he would say it, this [anger] would leave him. If he said, “A’oodhu billaahi min al-shaytaan (I seek refuge with Allaah from the Shaytaan),”, this [anger] would leave him.’” (Reported by al-Bukhaari, al-Fath, 6/377). He (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) also said: “If a man gets angry and says ‘A’oodhu billaah (I seek refuge with Allaah),’ his anger will cease.” (Saheeh al-Jaami’ al-Sagheer, no. 695).

Keeping quiet. The Messenger (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “If any one of you gets angry, let him keep quiet.” (Reported by Imaam Ahmad, al-Musnad, 1/239; Saheeh al-Jaami’, 693, 4027). Anger usually makes a person lose control, often to the extent that he may utter words of kufr (Allaah forbid), or curses, or the word of divorce (talaaq) which will destroy his family, or foul language that will earn him the enmity of others. Keeping quiet is the way to avoid all of these evils.

Keeping still. The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “If any one of you gets angry, let him sit down if he is standing. If his anger goes away, (that is good), otherwise let him lie down.”

The narrator of this hadeeth was Abu Dharr (may Allaah be pleased with him), who told the following story: he was watering his animals at a trough, when some other people came along. He said, “Who among you will help Abu Dharr to water his animals and ....?” A man said, “I will,” but he broke the trough. Abu Dharr was standing, so he sat down, then he lay down. Someone asked him, “O Abu Dharr, why did you sit down then lie down?” He said, “Because the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said … [and quoted the hadeeth].” (The hadeeth with the whole story is reported in Musnad Ahmad, 5/152. See also Saheeh al-Jaami’, no. 694).

According to another report, Abu Dharr was watering his animals at a trough when another man made him angry, so he sat down… (Fayd al-Qadeer al-Mannaawi, 1/408).

One of the benefits of this Prophetic teaching is that it prevents the angry person from doing something crazy and out of control. An angry person could inflict harm or even kill – as we shall see shortly – or he could destroy property and so on. Sitting down makes it less likely that he will explode in this fashion, and lying down makes it even less likely that he will do something reckless or harmful. Al-‘Allaamah al-Khattaabi (may Allaah have mercy on him) said in his commentary on Abu Dawood: “The one who is standing is ready to move and destroy things. The one who is sitting is less likely to do so, and the one who is lying is not able to do anything of the sort. It seems that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) commanded the angry person to sit down or lie down in order to prevent him from doing anything that he would later regret. And Allaah knows best.” (Sunan Abi Dawood wa ma’ahu ma’aalim al-sunan, 5/141)

Remembering the advice of the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him). Abu Hurayrah (may Allaah be pleased with him) reported that a man came to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) and said: “Advise me.” He said: “Do not become angry.” The man repeated his request several times, and each time the response was, “Do not become angry.” (Reported by al-Bukhaari, Fath al-Baari, 10/465).

According to another report, the man said, “I thought about what the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) had said, and I realized that anger is the source of all evil.” (Musnad Ahmad, 5/373).

“Do not get angry, and Paradise will be yours.” (A saheeh hadeeth. Saheeh al-Jaami’, 7374. Ibn Hajar attributed it

This is taken from an article in my blog post:
www.muftisays.com/blog/abu+mohammed/262_19-04-2010/shaita...

From part of the Hadith, Shaytan said: "O' Musa! Since you interceded for me before Allah you have obliged me. I shall advise you to be wary of me in three places in order that you do not face damnation and ruin.

First: During anger; for in that state my soul is in your heart and my eyes into yours.

There is a Hadith which I cant recall currently, I believe its in one of my posts.

Something to the effect that when a person gets angry, shaitans lips are are the heart ready to swallow the heart up.

If someone can find this Hadith please post it here. Jazakallah.

Isa (Jesus) -peace be upon him- was once asked: "What thing is difficult?" He said: "God's wrath."
Prophet Yahya (John the Baptist) -peace be upon him- then asked:
"What thing takes near the wrath of God?" He said:"Anger". Yahya -peace be upon him- asked him:"What thing grows and increases anger?"
Isa -peace be upon him- said:"Pride, prestige, hope for honour and
haughtiness"

The causes which cause anger to grow are self-conceit, self-praise, jests and ridicule, argument, treachery, too much greed for too much wealth and name and fame. If these evils are united in a person, his conduct becomes bad and he cannot escape anger.

The Causes of Anger and It's Medicine From Imam Ghazali's book "Ihyaa Uloom ad Deen"
(The revival of religious teachings)

(some of the above is also from this book)

We are describing below the medicines of anger after one gets angry.

The medicine is a mixture of knowledge and action.

The medicine based on knowledge is of six kinds:

(1) The first medicine of knowledge is to think over the rewards of appeasing anger, that have come from the verses of the Quran and the
sayings of the Prophet (pbuh). Your hope for getting rewards of appeasing anger will restrain you from taking revenge.

(2) The second kind of medicine based on knowledge is to fear the punishment of God and to think that the punishment of God upon me is
greater than my punishment upon him. If I take revenge upon this man for anger, God will take revenge upon me on the Judgement Day.

(3) The third kind of medicine of anger based on knowledge is to take precaution about punishment of enemity and revenge on himself. You feel joy in having your enemy in your presence in his sorrows, You yourself are not free from that danger. You will fear that your enemy might take revenge against you in this world and in the next.

(4) Another kind of medicine based on knowledge is to think about the ugly face of the angry man, which is just like that of the ferocious
beast. He who appeases anger looks like a sober and learned man.

(5) The fifth kind of medicine based on knowledge is to think that the devil will advise by saying: " You will be weak if you do not get
angry!" Do not listen to him!

(6) The sixth reason is to think: " What reason have I got to get angry? What Allah wishes has occured!"

Medicine based on action

When you get angry, say: I seek refuge in God from the accursed evil (A'oudhou billaahi min as shaytaanir rajeem).

The prophet (pbuh) ordered us to say thus.

When Ayesha (RA) got angry, he dragged her by the nose and said: " O dear Ayesha, say: O God, you are the Lord of my prophet Muhammad, forgive my sins and remove the anger from my heart and save me from
misguidance."

If anger does not go by this means, you will sit down if you are standing, lie down if you are sitting, and come near to earth, as you have been created of earth. Thus make yourself calm like the earth.

The cause of wrath is heat and its opposite is to lie down on the ground and to make the body calm and cool.

This was just sent to me.

Anger Management

According to Qur'an and Sunnah Hadith

Abu Hurairah RadiAllahu anhu narrates that RasulAllah Sallallahu alaihi wasallam said:

The powerful is not he who knocks down others; undoubtedly the powerful is the one who controls himself in a fit of anger. (Bukhari)

How To Control Anger?

1- Seeking refuge with Allaah from the accursed Shaytaan when feeling angry.

Al-Bukhaari (3282) and Muslim (2610) narrated that Sulaymaan ibn Surad said: I was sitting with the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) and two men were trading insults, One of them was red in the face and his veins were standing out. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said:

"I know a word which, if he said it, what he is feeling would go away. If he said,'I seek refuge with Allaah from the Shaytaan,' what he is feeling would go away." 2- Changing one's posture when feeling angry.

Abu Dawood (4782) narrated that Abu Dharr (may Allaah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said to us:

"If one of you gets angry when he is standing, let him sit down; if his anger disappears, all well and good, otherwise let him lie down."

Classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh Abi Dawood. 3- Bring to mind the reward for patience, forbearance and restraining your anger,

for that is the characteristic of the pious who are promised Paradise, as Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

"Be quick in the race for forgiveness from your Lord, and for a Garden whose width is that (of the whole) of the heavens and of the earth, prepared for the righteous,-

"Those who spend (freely), whether in prosperity, or in adversity; who restrain anger, and pardon (all) men;- for Allah loves those who do good.

[Aal 'Imraan 3:133-134]

The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said:

"Whoever restrains his anger when he is able to act upon it, Allaah will fill his heart with pleasure on the Day of Resurrection."

Narrated by Ibn Abi'l-Dunya; classed as hasan by al-Albaani in Saheeh al-Targheeb, 2623. Cures for Anger

When talking about cures for anger, it's important to think about why we get angry in the first place.

A lot of the time, people get angry because they lose control of a situation. Anger is their attempt to regain control, but in actuality, does not help at all. It actually makes it worse because when a person is angry, he has shown weakness. He puts himself at a disadvantage both in dealing with people (in a debate, for example), and also in dealing with shaitan. He becomes a much weaker prey for shaitan.

This is why our beloved Prophet saws said,

"The strong is not the one who is physically powerful, but indeed, the one who controls himself when angry."

If anger is a problem for you, it may be helpful for you to write down all the times that you can remember that you got angry.. then look for a common factor that made you angry, or rather made you act on your anger.

Feeling anger is normal, and the act of being angry is not in and of itself necessarily sinful. It's what you do with that anger that makes it a problem.

And while we're on the subject, there's an amazing lecture (As always mA) by brother Nouman about the characteristics of the people of jannah, as taken from verses in Surah aal Imraan.

One of them is that they swallow their anger. Brother Nouman analyzes why the word 'swallow' is used, and not 'control', etc.

When we are eating something, and let's say someone is coming, and we don't want them to know we were eating, so we quickly swallow the food.. will the person know we were eating? No, right? If there are no signs, like chewing, etc, the person will not even suspect that we were eating.

So in the same way, Allah (Subhanuhu wa Ta`ala) tells us that the people who shall enter jannah swallow their anger, or make it completely go away.. to the point where the people around them do not even suspect that the person is angry. SubhanAllah!

Usually, when someone is angry, and they're trying to control themselves, you'll see them shaking, or turning red, or holding themselves back. And then someone will go and ask them if they're ok.

So the best thing to do, is when you feel anger coming up from inside you, quickly swallow it and make it disappear. Of course it won't be that easy, but if you make it your habit, it will become easier and easier to do.

And it's important to note that Allah (Subhanuhu wa Ta`ala) tells us that the people of jannah swallow their anger, not that they don't have anger.

www.halaltube.com/nouman-ali-khan-islam-the-only-real-sal... What to do when anger arrives

Seek refuge in Allah from the accursed shaitan.

However, this does not mean saying "Aaoodhobillah" quickly and without reflection will help. It is important to know and understand exactly what you're doing. You saying "Aaoodhobillahi minash`shaitanir rajeem" in the first place is a reflection that you understand that this anger is coming from shaitan, and you need Allah (Subhanuhu wa Ta`ala)'s help to rid yourself of shaitan. Ask Allah for protection with humility and with the understanding that only He swt can help you.

Make wudu.

Anger comes from shaitan. Shaitan is made of fire. Water extinguishes fire, and thus wudu will help. Wudu will also help you take your mind off things for a minute, and calm down.

Abu Dawud in his Sunan noted that the Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wasallam) stated:

"Anger comes from Shaitan. Shaitan was created from fire, and fire is extinguished only with water. So when you become angry, you should perform Wudu."

Stay silent.

The Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wasallam) said,

"If any of you becomes angry, then let him stay quiet."

You opening your mouth at this moment is a bad idea. Your anger may cause you to violate one of the rights of the person who made you angry. Your anger in and of itself will probably not be held against you on the Day of Judgment. Your WORDS or actions said/done in anger probably will. Fear Allah and hope in His reward for swallowing your anger.

Change your physical setting.

If you are angry and standing, sit down. If you are already sitting, lay down. This is because it is our natural disposition to do the opposite. If we are sitting and get angry, we naturally want to jump up and make a scene. If we are laying down, we naturally want to sit up. So fight that urge and do the opposite. Don't give shaitan energy to feed off of.

Befriend those that are better than you in this regard.

If you're always hanging out with people who are excited and impatient, and hot-tempered, chances are, you too will be this way. If you're with calm, cool-headed people who do not let their anger overtake them, you will feel silly and embarrassed in front of them if you ever want to behave in a silly manner when angry. This will then turn into your habit and you will become like them.

Leave the setting one is in when he becomes angry. Know the effects of anger on one's health.

Try googling it. You'll find a wide range of diseases and illnesses that can be the result of anger problems. And realize that just like Allah (Subhanuhu wa Ta`ala) has rights we must fulfill, and our fellow beings have rights we must fulfill, we also have rights upon ourselves. We shouldn't do damage to ourselves with our own hands.

Practice Sabr.

It is usually the lack of this essential trait that allows people to get angry and show their anger. The literal meaning of sabr is to restrain, hold back, or pin down. A prisoner is often called "sabran", as he is held/pinned down.

".. only those who are patient shall receive their rewards in full, without reckoning." Az-Zumr:10

"Without reckoning", or "bighayri hisaab", can either mean "without limit" or "without questioning".

If it means "without questioning", one possible reason that Allah (Subhanuhu wa Ta`ala) may save them from being questioned is that they never questioned Allah (Subhanuhu wa Ta`ala) or qadr.

May Allah (Subhanuhu wa Ta`ala) help us all to swallow our anger and be among the people of the highest level of jannah.. Ameen!

Take it one day at a time.

Try to not get angry, or to swallow your anger, for just one day. Then increase it to two days. Then three. They say it takes 21 days to make something your habit (some say 4o days). So if you can do it for that long (and you CAN!! if it has any value to you), insha Allah it will be so much easier after that because having a cool and calm personality will be your habit, a part of you.. Insha Allah..!
