As salamu alaikum,

I wanted something clarified - recently one of the Maulanas
answered a ques on backbiting - I got the impression that if we
backbited a brother/sister, then to be forgiven we make DUA for the
person(s) we backbitied, asking Allah to forgive them.

But do we have to go to the person we backbited directly and ask
forgiveness from them directly? Or is it sufficient to just ask Allah
to forgive them?

Anyone can answer this please?

And Allah Knows Best

As salamu alaikum

Assalamu alaikum,

From the answer posted i got the impression that if the person knows
of the backbiting then you need to ask for forgiveness from them
directly as well as from Allah.

If they don't hear of your backbiting about them then you don't need
to ask forgiveness from them but ask forgiveness from Allah...

Wa Alaykum Salaam

That's the impression i get too! And i think it makes sense as if
the person knows, then it's only right that u seek 4giveness from them.
On the other hand if they don't know, ask 4giveness only from Allah.

Allahu Aalam

Salam,

The answer says "Ask Allah to forgive them" (the person you
backbited about). Not for yourself. It's the least you can do for them
that you ask Allah to forgive their sins. This refers to making Du'aa
for the person you backbited about. Like a way of compensating.
Obviously, in any case, one should feel full regret and the intention
of not commiting the act again are essential. This itself is a form of
Tawbah.

I hope this helps.

Assalamoalaikum Warahmatullah

The following dua should be made for those whom one has insulted:

'O Allaah, to any believer whom I have insulted, let that be cause to draw him near to You on the Day of Resurrection.'

Allahumma fa ayyomaa mu'minin sababtuhu faj'al dhaalika lahu qurbatan ilayka yawmal qiyaamah.

It's enough to make you jealous of your victim ! So dun bad-mouth them eh ?
