Was not sure where exactly to post this, as recently many threads on Taqlid popped up. I came across this a few nights ago and thought it would add nicely to the discussion. Please do not practise anything from below before confirming with your scholars, it is being posted for more educational purposes.

Taqleed and Reconcilation of Opinions
from the Maktubat of Imam Rabbani Ahmad Sirhindi رحمة الله عليه‎

Just as it is essential for one to rectify one's beliefs according to the Qur'an and the Sunnah, it is equally essential to understand the injunctions of the Qur'an and the Hadith as understood by the A'immah Mujtahidin [i.e. the four Imams] and to practice accordingly. It is incorrect for a Muqallid to extract laws from the Qur'an and the Hadith, which differ with the view of his Imam.

[In the case of multiple opinions in one mazhab, on a matter] the Muqallid should follow the preferred view of the mazhab; he should avoid Rukhsah [i.e. taking the easier option] and he should adopt Azimah [i.e. the more cautious view].

Wherever possible, one should practically reconcile the views of the A'immah Mujtahidin, so that one's action is approved from all angles. Consider the following example: Imam Shafi'i ‏رحمه الله regards the intention Fardh in Wudhu, hence one should not perform Wudhu without an intention. Imam Shafi'i ‏رحمه الله also considers the sequence of Wudhu and washing the limbs in quick succession necessary, hence one should not contradict this procedure.

Imam Malik ‏رحمه الله maintains that it is Fardh, to rub the limbs when washing it, hence one should maintain this aspect too. Similarly, he regards touching a female with desire and touching the private parts as factors that nullify Wudhu. Hence, once should repeat one's Wudhu in these instances [even though it may not be necessary according to the view of Imam Abu Hanifah ‏رحمه الله].

translated by Mawlana Abdur-Rahman ibn Hafiz Hussain Kolia حفظه الله‎

One could conclude, that the objective of Taqlid is cautiousness.
