"Surely, Allaah loves al-Muttaqeen (the pious)." (Soorah at-Tawbah, 9:4)
"Those who spend [in Allah's Cause - deeds of charity, alms, etc.] in prosperity and in adversity, who repress anger, and who pardon men. Verily, Allaah loves al-Muhsineen (the good doers)." (Soorah Aal 'Imraan, 3:134)
Mufti Muhammad Shafi رحمه الله says,
While explaining this verse, Imam al-Baihaqi رحمه الله has narrated an amazing episode from the life of Hadrat 'Ali (Zainul'abidin رحمه الله) ibn Sayyidna Husain رضي الله عنه. The report says that his maid was helping him in his wudu (ablution) when, all of a sudden, the water-pitcher slipped out of her hands spilling water all over Hadrat 'Ali (Zainul'abidin رحمه الله) ibn Sayyidna Husain رضي الله عنه. His clothes got wet. In was natural that he would be angry.
The maid sensed the impending danger and lost no time in reciting the following verse of the Qur'an: "[Those] who repress anger, and who pardon men."
Hearing this, the venerated scion of the Prophet's household صلى الله عليه وسلم lost whatever rash of anger he may have felt. He became totally silent. The maid then recited the second sentence of the verse: "Verily, Allaah loves al-Muhsineen (the good doers)."
Since this sentence implicitly instructs people to be good to others and thus be loved by Allah, Hadrat 'Ali (Zainul'abidin رحمه الله) ibn Sayyidna Husain رضي الله عنه, once he heard it, said: 'All right, go. I give you your freedom.' (Ruh al-Ma'ani with reference to Baihaqi) [Ma'ariful Qur'an]
"Truly, Allaah loves those who turn unto Him in repentance and loves those who purify themselves." (Soorah al-Baqarah, 2:222)
"And Allaah loves as-Saabireen (the patient)." (Soorah Aal 'Imraan, 3:146)
"Verily, Allaah loves those who act justly." (Soorah al-Ma'idah, 5:42)
"Certainly, Allaah loves those who put their trust (in Him)." (Soorah Aal 'Imraan, 3:159)
"Verily, Allaah loves those who fight in His cause in rows (ranks) as if they were a solid structure." (Soorah as-Saff, 61:4)
Mufti Muhammad Shafi رحمه الله says,
"The main subject of this Surah for which it was revealed is to mention the dearest action in the sight of Allah سبحانه و تعالى. This verse states that it is jihad in Allah's way, and that the best row of battle in the sight of Allah سبحانه و تعالى is the one firmly established against Allah's enemies to make Allah's word prevail, and which, on account of the valor and unshaken determination of Mujahideen, looks like a strong structure cemented with molten lead." (Ma'ariful Qur'an)
"And Allaah does not love the Mufsideed (mischief makers)." (Soorah al-Ma'idah, 5: 64)
"Verily, Allah does not love such as are proud and boastful." (Soorah an-Nisaa, 4:36)
Mufti Muhammad Shafi رحمه الله said,
There are many ahadith carrying stern warnings against arrogance and pre-Islamic vainglory:
Sayyidna Ibn Mas'ud رضي الله عنه has narrated that the Holy Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said: 'A person who has in his heart faith worth the weight of a mustard seed will not go to the Hell; and a person who has in his heart arrogance worth the weight of a mustard seed will not go to Paradise.' (Mishkat, p. 433, vide Muslim)
Quoted here is another hadith which also carries a definition of arrogance:
Sayyidna Ibn Mas'ud رضي الله عنه has narrated that the Holy Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said: 'Whoever has in his heart arrogance worth the weight of a particle will not go to Paradise. Then, someone asked: 'How about people who like that their clothes be good, and their shoes too ... (Is this arrogance?)' He صلى الله عليه وسلم said: 'Allah is beautiful; He likes beauty. Arrogance is wanton disregard of the (other person's) right and the holding of people in contempt.' (Mishkat, p. 433,vide Muslim) [Ma'ariful Qur'an]
"Verily, He (Allaah) loves not Al-Musrifeen (those who waste by extravagance)." (Soorah al-An'aam, 6:141)
Mufti Muhammad Shafi رحمه الله said,
"That is, do not spend beyond limits because Allah سبحانه و تعالى does not like wasteful spenders. A question arises here. In case a person spends everything he has in the way of Allah سبحانه و تعالى, his wealth, even his life, this cannot be called 'Israf (extravagance). In fact, it would be difficult to say that, even by having done all that, one can be sure that he or she has done what was really the due of Allah! Then, what does this prohibition of 'Israf or extravagance at this place really mean? The answer is that extravagance in one department of life usually causes shortfall, shortcoming or deficiency in other departments. One who spends extravagantly to fulfill his desires generally ends up failing in his duty to fulfil the due rights of others. Prohibited here is this kind of shortcoming. It means that should a person give away whatever he has in the way of Allah سبحانه و تعالى and return with empty hands, how is he going to fulfill the rights of his children, family and relatives, even those of his own self? Therefore, the rule of guidance given is that one should observe moderation even when spending in the way of Allah سبحانه و تعالى so that all due rights can be taken care of." [Ma'afirul Qur'an]
Mufti Menk mentions that quality is allowed to be sought after, but not quantity. For example, if one had the means and he were to buy a high quality expensive product, then as long as he is fulfilling his obligations of paying zakah, sadaqah, etc, this would be permissible. But if a person were to buy far more of something than he needed, even if the products were much lesser in value, this would be wasteful and not permissible.
"And Allah loves not the disbelievers, sinners." (Soorah al-Baqarah, 2:276)
"Verily, Allah does not like anyone who is a betrayer of his trust, and indulges in crime." (Soorah an-Nisaa, 4:107)
