Beware of praising anyone for qualities that he lacks: his acts betray him, and give you the lie.

In this life we get nothing save by effort. Many a man fails because he never tries. Things don't turn up in this world until somebody turns them up. A law of nature governs that honest effort cannot be lost, but that someday the proper benefits will be forthcoming.

If honor be your clothing, the suit will last a lifetime; but if clothing be your honor, it will soon be worn threadbare. The well-dressed man is he whose clothes you never notice.

Know that you have three friends.

The first of them is your wealth, which you shall lose at the time of death.

The second of them is your family, who shall leave you once you are in your grave.
The third of them are your actions, which shall never depart from you.

So befriend that which will accompany you in your grave, and be intimate with it. The intelligent one is he who knows Allah, His commands and His prohibitions.

[Ibn 'Ata' Allah (Taj al-'arus al-hawi li tahdhib al-nufus, 32).]

There are two kinds of speeches and two kinds of silences. Speech is either truth or falsification, and silence is either fruition or heedlessness. If one speaks the truth, his words are better than his silence, but the one who invents falsifications, his silence is better than his speech. [Al Hujwiri]

If you cannot be of benefit to the Muslims, then do not harm them; if you cannot make them happy, then do not make them sorrowful; if you cannot please them, then do not abuse them; and if you cannot praise them, then do not disparage them. [Yahya ibn Mu'adh]
