Maroof al-Karkhi رحمه الله once asked another man to lead the prayer. The man said, "If I lead you in this prayer, I will not lead you in any other prayer afterwards."

Al-Karkhi رحمه الله said, "Do you consider that you will pray another prayer [in the future]? I seek refuge from [such] distant hopes for it keeps one from doing the best deeds."

Sayyiduna Ibn 'Umar رضي الله عنهما related that the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم said: "These hearts become rusty just as steel becomes rusty when water falls onto it."

He was صلى الله عليه وسلم asked, "O Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم! How can they be polished?"

He صلى الله عليه وسلم replied: "Profuse remembrance of death and recitation of the Qur'aan."

"Do not lengthen your hopes so that your work and deeds become burdensome to you. Anticipate the closeness of death, and say to yourself: I will bear the difficulty today, for perhaps I will die tonight; and I will have patience tonight, for perhaps I will die tomorrow. For death does not attack at a particular time, at a particular age, or in a particular situation, though its assault is inevitable.

Therfore, preparation for it is superior to preparation for this worldly life, since you know that you will not stay in it for more than a short period of time.

Perhaps all you have left of life is one breath, one hour, or one day..."

Time To Leave

Because Allah has created us and Allah owns us, Allah has a right to decide how we should live our lives. Life is not ours to live, we don't know how long we have, we didn't make ourselves, we didn't fashion ourselves, our parents didn't decide how we were going to be. Allah made us [ayah] Allah made you in the wombs of your mothers, as he wanted, Allah provides for us and Allah will decide how long we will live and when Allah decides our time is up, then Allah will order an angel and he will come and take our soul away and a person will be no more.

Malikul Maut [Angel of death] will not warn us, "Here's my mobile number, whenever you're ready let me know, I'll come and pick you up"

When the time comes [ayah] the time that Allah has assigned, when that comes [ayah] "It will neither be put foreword nor be put back" it will come at its fixed time and blessed are the souls who will be ready when the comes and they're ready...many people Allah says when the time comes for them to leave this world they cry and they weep and they beg the angel [ayah] "Ya Allah give us a little bit more time we will change, we will become good, we will follow the messenger, whatever we've done [ayah] I will become very pious, give me a little bit more time" but will not be given more time. Many other people when the time comes and the angels comes, there are many stories of pious people, masha Allah at the time of their death the angel comes and then he wants to take them they [pious people] say "where have you been? We've been waiting for you all our lives. We've waited for this moment. Come, let's go"

It's like when a friend goes to his friend to pick him up to go somewhere and then if he's ready then he says "yeah, yeah let's go" and if he's not ready he says "wait I've got so much to do, perhaps not today we'll go some other time" or whatever, then he makes excuses. People who've prepared, done well, when the angel comes they say "Yep, lets go" Allah says in the Qur'an [ayah] "the angels say to them "Have no fear don't worry, be assured of a paradise which has been promised for you"" [ayah] when the angels take away souls of good people they say "peace be upon you"

But the people who haven't lived a good life, they make all sorts of excuses, they cry and they wish they would be given more time but will not be given more time. So people who live their lives in obedience to Allah, Allah's promise with them "whosoever does good deeds [be a man or a woman] wherever [ayah] provided they are believers [they believe in Allah, they believe in the prophet of Allah, they believe in the book of Allah that he has sent and whatever needs to be believed in they believe]" [ayah] then Allah says "I definitely surely [it's a double stress] ..."
"I will definitely surely guarantee them a wonderful life"
Hayaatun Tayibaa [a wonderful life]... to who?

Those, who do good deeds with imaan.

The Final Attack of Shaytan- At the Time of Death! -Ibn al-Qayyim

Stories of Bad Death: "Say Laa ilaaha illallaah." So he replied, "King! Rook! Checkmate!" and then he passed away."

Imam Ibn al-Qayyim [RA] said,

"So it may become impossible for him to pronounce the shahaadah, as many people have witnessed happen to those on the deathbed, such that it was said to some of them:

"Say Laa ilaaha illallaah." So he replied, "Aaah! Aaah! I cannot say it!"

And it was said to another, "Say Laa ilaaha illallaah." So he replied, "King! Rook! Checkmate!" and then he passed away.

And it was said to another, "Say Laa ilaaha illallaah." So he started singing irrationally, saying, 'Taatinaa tinintaa, [no meaning, just irrational singing]' and then passed away.

And the same was said to another, so he replied, "And how will what you are saying help me when I left no sin except that I committed it?" and then he passed away without saying it.

And the same was said to another, so he replied, "And how will that benefit me? And I don't know if I have ever prayed a single time to Allaah?" and then he passed away without saying it.

And the same was said to another, so he replied [talking about himself], "He is a disbeliever in what you say," and then he passed away.

And the same was said to another, so he replied, "Every time I want to say it my tongue withholds."

And someone who was present at the death of someone who would beg told me that [they told him to say the shahaadah] so he started saying, "For Allaah's Sake. A penny for Allaah's Sake," until he passed away.

And a trader told me that he was present when one of his relatives was on his deathbed, so they told him to say Laa ilaaha illallaah and he was saying, "This piece is cheap. This is a good buy. This is such and such," until he passed away.

So if the devil has gained mastery over the servant in the state when his mind is present and his strength [is also present] and he has complete cognizance, and has employed him in committing whichever acts of disobedience to Allaah he wants him to do, and has made him unmindful of the remembrance of Allaah the Most High, and has paralysed his tongue from remembering Him and his limbs from obeying Him-then what does one think will be the case when his strength breaks down and his heart and soul become preoccupied with the death pangs that he is in?

And [all the while] Shaitaan will have gathered all of his strength and determination and assembled everything that he is capable of to avail his opportunity concerning him-for that is the last action.

So the strongest his Shaitaan can be against him will be at that time, and the weakest he [i.e., the person] can be, will be at that time.

So who do you think will be safe from that?
So it is there that, "Allaah keeps firm those who believe, with the firm word [i.e., 'the firm word' is Laa ilaaha illallaah], in the worldly life and in the Hereafter. And Allaah sends astray the wrongdoers. And Allaah does what He wills." [surah Ibraaheem 14:27]

So how can someone whose heart Allaah has made heedless from His remembrance and who has followed his desires and whose affair is ever [in] neglect be granted the success to have a good ending?

Thus far away-the one whose heart is distant from Allaah the Most High, heedless of Him, worshipping his own desires, a slave to his lusts, his tongue dry from ever remembering Allaah [i.e., not moist with His remembrance], his limbs incapacitated from obeying Him actively working to disobey Him-far away [is such a person] from being granted the success to have a good ending."

There was a righteous king who was always conscious of the Hereafter. To remind himself that death was imminent, he had a servant who would stand behind him all the time uttering the word "death" repeatedly.

Shaykh Saalih Ibn Fawzaan al-Fawzaan حفظه الله said,

Whoever remembers death frequently will benefit in three ways:

1) He will hasten to repent
2) He will become content
3) He will be active in worship

Whoever forgets death will be punished in three ways:

1) He will delay repentance
2) He will no longer be content with what is sufficient
3) He will be lazy in worship

Shaykh Saalih Ibn Fawzaan al-Fawzaan حفظه الله said,

"One of the effective ways of reminding oneself about death is to see those who are about to die, for seeing the dead, witnessing the death throes and thinking about how a person looks after he has died will put an end to empty pleasure and keep one awake at night, and will motivate one to do good works and to strive harder." [Weakness of Iman]

al-Hasan al-Basri رحمه الله once went to visit a sick person and found him in the throes of death, so he saw the distress and anguish that had befallen him. He went back to his family with a different colour from when he had left (i.e. he was visibly shaken by what he had seen).

They said to him, "Come and eat, may Allaah have mercy on you."

He said, "O my family, go ahead, eat and drink. I have seen death, and I shall never stop working hard until I meet it." [at-Tadhkirah]

Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah رضي الله عنه narrated that the Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم said: "Everyone will have regret after he dies."

The Companions رضي الله عنهم asked: "O Messenger of Allaah, what will he regret?"

The Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم replied, "If he was a good doer he would regret that he had not increased in his good deeds. And if he was a wrong doer he would regret that he had not decreased his bad deeds."

Sayyiduna 'Abdullaah Ibn Mas'ood رضي الله عنه said,

"You are in the passage of day and night, your life decreases [by every passing moment] but your deeds are all preserved, and death shall come to you all of a sudden. So, whoever planted good is soon to expect the harvest of happiness, and whoever planted evil is soon to expect the harvest of regret."
