Abu Darda رضي الله عنه said:

"If only you knew what you will certainly see upon your death, you would never again eat a single bite out of a craving appetite, and you would never again drink an extra sip of water for the pleasure of unquenchable and insatiable thirst.

Hence, you will remain outdoor in perpetuity, bewildered and awaiting the unexpected, and you will never again seek comfort in a shelter or seek a shade. You will wander aimlessly and climb the hilltops of every mountain, you will look up towards the heavens and beseech your Lord for mercy, and you will beat on your chest and cry endlessly, and you will wish that you were a little vegetable - a plant which is protected to grow, and then plucked to be eaten by a hungry person passing along."

Remember the Terminator of all Pleasures

أكثروا ذكر هاذم اللذات يعني الموت

"Remember the terminator of all pleasures i.e. death." [Tirmidhi]

In the above hadeeth we are being reminded to remember the terminator of all pleasures. This is why we are instructed to visit graves and remember death, because death is something that awaits every one of us. The believers have been instructed to take part in funerals for which there is a special reward. Funerals also remind us of death, and when a Muslim dies, his or her bathing, shrouding, the funeral prayer, and burial are an obligation upon all Muslims. If these things are not done, all Muslims of that area are sinful. The deceased has a right over all of the people in the vicinity.

Imam Ibn Rajab al-Hanbali رحمه الله stated, "The entire life in this world is a month of fasting for the pious. They abstain therein from the forbidden desires. When death comes to them, the month of their fasting comes to an end and they begin to enjoy the feast of their ending of the fast [via the rewards that Allaah bestows on them]." [Karzoon, vol 1, pp 265-266]

The Successul Person

Only the person who values his time in this world and spends it wisely in remembering and obeying Allaah سبحانه و تعالى is truly fortunate and successul. Such a person lives spending every moment for the pleasure of Allaah سبحانه و تعالى and adorns himself in the glorious sunnah of the Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم.

It is said that: "Whoever dies, his resurrection has come."

Whatever happens after death, it is part of the Last Day. Therefore, how close is the Day to us?! There is nothing between us and it except the death of a man. Then, he enters into the Last Day, wherein there is nothing except recompense for the deeds.

O man! Think well and ponder attentively, you will discover that you are at risk, for the time of death is not known to us. A person can go out of his house without returning to it. A person can sit down on his office chair without standing from it. A person can sleep on his bed, however, he might be carried from his bed to his washing bed, (where he will be washed in preparation to be buried).

This matter requires us to seize upon the opportunity of life to repent to Allaah, the Mighty and Sublime, and that a person constantly be aware of repenting to Allaah, returning to Him and seeking His forgiveness, until his lifespan ends, and he is in a good desirable state.

"Death is a gift for a believer." (Bayhaqi, Shu'ab al-Iman)

For the one who truly believes, it is through the gateway of death that he finds the door to eternal contentment and happiness. (Mirqat al-Mafatih, 4:75)

The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said:

"Actions will be judged only according to their sealing states [at death]." (Bukhari; Muslim)

A person will be judged in the Hereafter according to the state he dies in. A hadith of the Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم explains that a person continues to perform the actions of a believer all his life, then takes a turn for the worse and dies as a transgressor, [and hence becomes worthy of Hellfire], while another person indulges in sin all his life, then undergoes a change for the better and dies the pleasant death of a believer, [and hence enters Paradise] (Bukhari and Muslim).

This hadith encourages that a person remains constant in obedience and in abstaining from sins until he leaves this world for the next. (Mirqat al-Mafatih, 1:268)

"The grave is but a garden from the gardens of Paradise or a pit from the pits of Hell." (Tirmidhi)

The renown jurist, hadith scholar, and ascetic Sufyan ath-Thawri رحمه الله would say, "Whoever remembers the grave frequently will find it to be a garden of Paradise, and whoever is heedless of its remembrance will find it to be a pit of Hellfire." (Mirqat al-Mafatih, 9:216)

The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said:

"Every person will be resurrected in the condition he dies." (Muslim)

If a person dies in a good state, then he or she will be with the rightous. Conversely, if a person dies in a bad state, then he or she will be resurrected with the unrighteous. (Provisions for the Seekers)

The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said:

"Do not revile the dead, for they have passed on to what they have sent forth." (al-Bukhari)

One should not revile the dead unless their unbelief has been established through certainty, as with some of the enemies of the Messengers (peace and blessings be upon them) (e.g., Pharoah and Nimrod, who have been mentioned in the Qur'an to have died on unbelief). However, the Messenger Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم said, "Of the excellence of one's Islam is that he leaves that which does not concern him." (Tirmidhi; Ahmad) (Mirqat al-Mafatih, 4:152)

He صلى الله عليه وسلم also said, "A believer is not an attacker nor a curser nor someone obscene or abusive." (Tirmidhi) (Pearls from the Path)

The Inevitable Truth: Death

By Ahsan Syed

In an age of technological advancements, profound psychological and physiological discoveries, and diverse religious and ideological beliefs, there is one thing accepted by all. It is a fact, an inescapable reality. It is death. No matter what corner of the world one comes from, he or she knows the only thing as unavoidable as living is dying. One may delay preparing for it, or even be apathetic toward it, but one cannot deny it.

An Urdu poet once said, "The earth devoured even the most magnificent of skies." Here, skies symbolically represent people whose reach was to the sky and beyond, or whose personality and influence was as encompassing as the sky, or whose wealth and power was vast like the sky. Today these "skies" are six feet beneath the earth even though the sky is greater. Many have left nothing besides their names carved on their crumbling gravestones, or printed on decaying parchments covered with dust.

Muslim belief regarding death is more far-seeing than that of other religions. We believe in a day of resurrection, when the once living will be brought to life anew and given an account of their deeds.

A question, though, arises: "Granted that we all will die and be resurrected, what do we do right now?" The Messenger of Allah (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) said, "The intelligent one is he who subdues his lower self and works for what comes after death, and the fool is he who puts his lower self in pursuit of its desires and has vain hopes about Allah" (Tirmidhi, Ibn Majah). Mufti Abdurrahman ibn Yusuf writes in Provisions for the Seekers, under this hadith, "The person who subdues his lower self is that person who renders himself in complete obedience to the commands of Allah" (ibn Yusuf 34). Obedience to Allah is the key. No matter how much the lower self forces an individual to follow his desires, if a person wants to attain the pleasure of Allah, he must obey Him. In obeying Him will he find prosperity and success.

Unfortunately, we are so preoccupied with our work and ourselves that most often we forget Allah. But there is no good excuse for heedlessness and neglect. We should make it a habit to go regularly to the masjid and stay in the company of scholars and righteous Muslims. By doing so, our inner courage and determination to avoid sin will grow, and when death comes knocking on our doors, we will be prepared to accompany the Angel of Death. Then on the Day of Judgment, when Allah may say to us, "Enter among my (honored) slaves. And enter into My Garden" (Qur'an 89: 29-30), admitting us into His mercy and the spacious abode of Paradise.
