Mashallah!!!

I thought moving to the middle east might make my experience of being a muslim easier, but Ive had an Omani Muslim brother come to me and ask me why I was growing the beard around my whole face!!!! and not just my Chin!!!


Well I appropriatly replied, its because I follow Mohammed SAW's example and not Phirones!! LOL.

To which he replied that in the Quran it say "LUHYAH" (or something like this) which Translates to only the chin part on the face....... and that - it just says to grow a fist full only there.......

I obviously told him about the ruling of all the 4 imams, but obviously, Allah only bless's those with understanding to whom he wishes. So I left it at that.

Has anyone heard of this LUHYAH business or anything, cos hes the second person to say this me..,.......

According to the Arab scholars:

The Arabic word for beard is lihyah. It derives from lahy (jaw) and lahyan (the two jaws). Thus, a beard is defined as the hair that grows on the cheeks and jaws- [Lisaan al-'Arab, 15/243].

It includes the hair that grows on the temples, underneath the lower lip, the hair of the chin, and the hair that grows on the lower side of the jaws. [Beard between salaf and khalaf]

Shaykh Muhammad ibn Saalih al-'Uthaymeen (may Allaah have mercy on him) was asked about what is meant by the beard. He replied:

The extent of the beard is from the cheekbones, level with the channel of the ears, until the bottom of the face. It includes the hair that grows on the cheeks.

It says in al-Qaamoos al-Muheet (p. 387): Lihyah (beard) is the hair of the cheeks and chin.

Based on this, the one who says that the hair that grows on the cheeks is not part of the beard must bring proof of that. [Majmoo' Fataawa Ibn 'Uthaymeen, 11/question no. 49 ]

He (may Allaah have mercy on him) was also asked: Are the cheeks part of the beard?

He replied: Yes, the cheeks are part of the beard, because this is what is implied by the language in which sharee'ah came. Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

"Verily, We have sent it down as an Arabic Qur'aan in order that you may understand" [Yoosuf 12:2]

"He it is Who sent among the unlettered ones a Messenger (Muhammad) from among themselves, reciting to them His Verses, purifying them (from the filth of disbelief and polytheism), and teaching them the Book (this Qur'aan, Islamic laws and Islamic jurisprudence) and Al‑Hikmah (As‑Sunnah)" [al-Jumu'ah 62:2]

Hence it is known that the meanings brought in the Qur'aan and Sunnah are the meanings indicated by the Arabic language, but if there is a particular shar'i meaning it should be interpreted in that manner. For example, salaah in Arabic means supplication (as in du'aa'), but in shar'i terminology it refers to the specific, well known act of worship (prayer), so when it is mentioned in the Qur'aan and Sunnah, it is to be understood in the shar'i sense, unless there is any indication to the contrary.

Based on this, Islam does not ascribe any particular shar'i meaning to the word lihyah (beard), so it is to be understood in its linguistic sense, and in Arabic it refers to the hair that grows on the cheeks and chin, from the cheekbone that is level with the channel of the ears to the jawbone.

It says in al-Qamoos: Lihyah (beard) is the hair of the cheeks and chin. Similarly it also says in Fath al-Baari, p. 35; vol. 10, al-Salafiyyah edition: It is a name for that which grows on the cheeks and chin.

Thus it is clear that the cheeks are part of the beard, and the believer must be patient in obeying Allaah and His Messenger (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him), even if it is strange among his own race or people. Glad tidings to the strangers.

It should be noted that truth is weighed according to the Book of Allaah and the Sunnah of His Messenger (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him); it is not weighed according to what people do that goes against the Qur'aan and Sunnah. We ask Allaah to make us and our Muslim brothers steadfast in adhering to the truth. [Majmoo' Fataawa Ibn 'Uthaymeen, 11/question no 50]

Shaykh Ibn Baaz (may Allaah have mercy on him) said:

The beard (al-lahyah) is that which grows on the cheeks and chin, as was explained by the author of al-Qaamoos. It is obligatory to leave the hair that grows on the cheeks and chin, and not to shave it or cut it.

May Allaah reform the affairs of all the Muslims. [Fataawa Islamiyyah, 2/325]

Shaykh Ibn 'Uthaymeen (may Allaah have mercy on him) also said:

The definition of the beard (al-lahyah) as stated by the scholars of the (Arabic) language is the hair of the face, jawbone and cheeks, in the sense that everything that grows on the cheeks, jawbone and chin is part of the beard. Removing any part of it also comes under the heading of sin, because the Messenger (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: "Leave the beard alone" and "Let the beard grow." This indicates that it is not permissible to remove any part of it, but the sin varies in degree; shaving is more serious than removing a part of it because it is a more extreme action and the one who shaves it more clearly goes against the command than the one who trims it. [Fataawa Hammah, p. 36]

The Position of the Beard in Islam


By al-'Allaamah Badee'ud-Deen Shaah ar-Raashidee as-Sindee

All praise is for Allaah, Lord of the Worlds; and prayers and peace be upon the Master of the Prophets and Messengers, and his household, family and companions; whomsoever follows them with goodness until the Day of Recompense.

To Proceed:

Allaah the Mighty and Majestic has made the figure of the human being very well and pleasing. As He said,
"We have certainly created the human being in the best of moulds." [Sooratut-Teen 95:4] [1]

It is proven that man's figure is very well and pleasing. And Allaah the Mighty and Majestic has created humans in pairs, for external distinction in both (i.e. male and female). He made the man having a beard, with which beauty and dignity augments. Such that, it is a crown of a man's face. Hence, it is generally observed that for each and every madhhab (mode of life, religion, ideology, etc.), be it Muslim or non-Muslim, the chieftain is bearded. Such that, man naturally considers the beard to be a source of honor. [That is so] because this is a divide hue (frame: religion), in comparison to which, there is no other hue,
"Our religion is the religion of Allaah. And who can give a better religion than Allaah? And we are His worshippers." [Sooratul-Baqarah 2:138]

So long as the mentality of the Muslims was secure from the hue of the polytheists, and the Jews and the Christians and their like, both, whether man or woman, considered the beard to be an adornment and beauty for the man. Accordingly, Ibn Batootah in his travelogue entitled, Tuhfatun-Nazaar fee 'Ajaa'ibil-Asfaar (1/17) records an occurrence which goes as follows: Shaykh Jamaalud-Deen Saawee was a very handsome person. Hence, one woman was infatuated with him, and through some type of pretense, called in to her house. After entering she had the doors closed. Then she called the Shaykh towards her for evil (fornication). The Shaykh tried his best to escape. However, when he did not find any means of escape, he first decided to go to the toilet and after entering, he took a blade and shaved his beard with it. When he came out, the woman found his face to be so hideous that she was disgusted with him. Thus he came out safe and secure, escaping evil.

Dear readers, consider this: When the mind was pure, the divine shape was liked by everyone. When the mind became impure, the good appearance appeared bad and the bad appearance appeared good. In fact, this is a mischief of shaytaan who dared to speak before Allaah the Mighty and Majestic and said,
"I will surely take from among Your servants a specific portion. And I will mislead them, and I will arouse in them [sinful] desires, and I will command them so they will slit the ears of cattle, and I will command them so they will change the creation of Allaah." [Sooratun-Nisaa' 4:118-119]

Meaning, the ways and means of leading astray that he directed Allaah's servants to. Among them was that he would instruct them that they should change Allaah's form of creation. And the Divine Commandment goes as follows,
"So direct your face towards the religion, haneef (upright on the truth). Adhere to the fitrah [2] of Allaah, upon which He has created the people. No change should there be in the creation of Allaah. That is the straight religion, but most of the people do not know." [Sooratur-Room 30:30]

Imaam of Hind, Shaah Waliyyullaah ad-Dihlawee (رحمة اللہ علیه) says in Hujjatullaahil-Baalighah (1/152), "Its cutting, meaning the beard, is the way of the Magians [3], and it is the altering of Allaah's creation."

And likewise shaving of the beard resembles oneself to the woman, about which there is a severe threat. It is narrated from Ibn 'Abbaas (radiyallaahu 'anhu) that the Prophet (sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) has cursed the men who imitate women and the women who imitate men. [4]

And similarly, Ibn 'Abbaas' narration is also related in Musnad Ahmad, Aboo Daawood, Tirmidhee and Ibn Maajah. It is narrated that the Prophet (sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) said, "Allaah has cursed the women who imitate men and the men who imitate women." [5]

Dear onlookers, that deed on which is the curse of Allaah and His Messenger (sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) is considered a very major and perilous sin. Al-'Allaamah Ibn Hajr al-Haythamee has included it among the major sins in az-Zawaajir 'an Iqtiraafil-Kabaa'ir. And externally, the beard is man's specific distinction, and the absence of the beard is the woman's specific distinction. So whoever shaves the beard certainly resembles the woman. Imaam al-Ghazzaalee (رحمة اللہ علیه) says in Ihyaa' 'Uloomud-Deen (2/257), "And with it, meaning the beard, men are distinguished from women." So he (the man) is included in this severe threat. And the beard is the Sunnah (exemplary way) of all the Prophets (عليهم الصلاة والسلام).

Accordingly, there is a mention of Haroon's ('alayhis-salaatu was-salaam) beard in the Noble Qur'aan,
"O son of my mother, do not seize me by the beard or by my head." [Soorah Ta-Ha 20:94]

Also, there is a mention of both Moosaa ('alayhis-salaatu was-salaam) and Aadam's ('alayhis-salaatu was-salaam) beard in ad-Durrul-Manthoor (1/62). And there is also an ordered in the Qur'aan,
"Those (Prophets عليهم الصلاة والسلام) are the ones to whom Allaah has guided, so take their guidance as an example." [Sooratul-An'aam 6:90]

That is, take as an example only those deeds other than which the Sharee'ah (Divine Law) of Muhammad (sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) has abrogated. However, this Sharee'ah did not abrogate the ruling on the beard. Rather, it has affirmed and emphasized it. Therefore, our Supreme Guide, Master of the Prophets and Messengers عليهم الصلاة والسلام, Muhammad's (sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) blessed beard filled his chest.

As is related by Yazeed al-Farsee in Shamaa'ilut-Tirmidhee, "Chapter of Seeing the Prophet (sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) in a Dream,' who said, 'Indeed, I saw the Messenger of Allaah (sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) in a dream.' So he said, 'Verily, the Messenger of Allaah (sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) used to say, "Indeed, the Shaytaan cannot imitate me, so whoever has seen me in a dream has indeed seen me." Can you describe the person you have seen in the dream?' I said. 'Yes. I will describe him between the spectrum of two men. His body and flesh were moderate, complexion was brown-skinned, inclining towards whiteness, eyes were kohl-smeared, smile was pleasant, figure was beautiful and round-like, his beard reaching here to here and it filled his chest.' So Ibn 'Abbaas (رضي الله عنهما) said, 'If you had seen him while awake, you could not have described him beyond that.'"

Similarly, the four well-known Caliphs, Aboo Bakr, 'Umar, 'Uthmaan and 'Alee, all had large beards. As mentioned in Tabaqaat Ibn Sa'd (3/114), Taareekhul-Khulafaa'lis-Suyootee (p. 102, 116, 129).

Also, the shaving and cutting of the beard resembles the polytheists and Magians. That is why avoiding it is definitely obligatory upon Muslims. This is so because whoever imitates a people, is included among them. As is the saying of the Messenger of Allaah (sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam), "Whoever imitates a folk is but among them." [6]

Dear readers, shaving the beard is [indeed] distinguished of oneself, meaning, making oneself defective. As Imaam Fakhrul-Andalus Ibn Hazm says in Maraatibul-Ijmaa' (p.157), "They (the scholars of the Ummah) are in agreement that shaving the whole beard is disfiguring - not permissible. So, al-Haakim has brought in Mustadrak a narration by 'Imraan and at-Tabraanee from the hadeeth of Ibn 'Umar and Mugheerah (radiyallaahu 'anhum), "The Messenger of Allaah (sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) has prohibited disfigurement." [7]

The meaning of disfigurement is "making defective." The disfigurement of the body is to amputate the nose and lips. And the disfigurement of the hair is to shave and depilate the hair of the cheek or to dye the hair black. As mentioned in the famous book of language and hadeeth, an-Nihaayah fee Ghareebil-Hadeeth wal-Hadeeth wal-Aathaar authored by Imaam Ibn Atheer al-Jazaree (2/294) and Majma' Bihaaril-Anwaar authored by al-'Allaamah Muhammad Taahir Patnee, (3/289). Therefore, this is also the reason why the shaving of the beard is prohibited. Rather, there is severe warning against the disfigurement of the cheek.

In Mu'jamul-Kabeer (11/41), there is a narration by Ibn 'Abbaas (radiyallaahu 'anhu), "Indeed, the Messenger of Allaah (sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) said, "Whoever disfigures his hair, there is no share for him with Allaah." Although there is a kalaam (discussion, debate) about this narration, since the real issue is proven through several evidences, quoting such narrations are useful for the purpose of targheeb wat-tarheeb (incitement and intimidation). And in the books, an-Nihaayah and Majma'ul-Bihaar the wording of this narration is, "The disfigurement of the cheeks is shaving the hair of the cheeks." Rather, all four madhaahib (schools of jurisprudence) which are attributed to the imams: Imaam Aboo Haneefah, Imaam Maalik, Imaam ash-Shaafi'ee (رحمة الله عليهم) and many other imaams have declared the shaving of the beard unlawful. [7]

Dear onlookers, in the previous subject matter few ahaadeeth were mentioned, from which the virtue and emphasis of the beard is made evident. And its shaving and cutting is proven to be a loathsome act. These are great facts for a sensible Muslim and his admonition. After this, specifically those ahaadeeth will be mentioned by which the virtue of leaving the beard and its emphasis, and besides that the evil and harm of shaving and cutting, is known. May Allaah grant us the tawfeeq (Divine-help) to receive this admonition - aameen.


The First And Second Hadeeth


From Ibn 'Umar (رضي الله عنهما), who said, 'The Messenger of Allaah (sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) said, "Differ from the mushrikeen (polytheists), save the beards and trim the moustaches." And in another narration, "Sharply trim the moustaches and leave the beards." [7]

EXPLANATION: In this hadeeth, there is an order to grow and leave the beard, and the command of the Messenger of Allaah (sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) is for the purpose of obligation and mandate. As described the scholars of principles (usool) of jurisprudence. As mentioned in al-Manaar ma'a Sharhin-Noorul-Anwaar, (p. 230), at-Tawdeeh ma'a Sharhit-Talweeh, (1/132) Usoolus-Sarkhasee (p. 185), Usoolul-Bazdawee (p. 21), Sharhul-Manaar li Ibni Maalik ma'a Hawaash lir-Rahaawee wa Azmee Zaadah wabnul-Hatbee (p. 120), al-Husaamee (p. 40).

And al-'Allaamah Ibn Haajim Jamaalud-Deen says in Mukhtasar Usool, "The masses of scholars said that the order in fact amounts to obligation with the masses of scholars." And in its explanation (Tahreer's) authored by Ameer Badshah, it says, "Al-'Allaamah Ibn Haajib Baydaawee says it is correct.

Imaam Raazee says it is the truth and Aamadee and Imaamul-Haramayn of Shaafi'ee madhhab say, 'And it is said that this was dictated by Ash'aree to his companions.'"

So leaving the beard is obligatory. And its shaver and cutter is a renouncer of an obligation. And renouncer of an obligation is considered a faasiq (open-sinner).

And as for he who opposes the order of the Messenger of Allaah is a very great admonishment,
"So let those beware who oppose from his (the Prophet's) order, lest fitnah (trial, tribulation) strike them or a painful punishment." [Sooratun-Noor 24:63]

Also, it is proven by this hadeeth that cutting of the beards is the action of the mushrikeen, not the Muslims. And whoever imitates them is considered among them, as [mentioned] in the previous hadeeth. So the person who shaves the beard is a mushrik by his appearance and image.

BENEFIT: The word "awfiru" is from "awfara" which means "plenty." So the meaning of awfiru will be grow the beard and leave it. So that the hair will become dense. As "waffaraahu tawfeeran: katharahu" (in-creased it and grew it)." [8] And in another narration is the "aafoo"which is from "a'faa." As in the famous book of Language of Hadeeth, an-Nihaayah fee Ghareebil-Hadeeth li Ibnil-Atheer (3/366), "Chapter of 'ayn with faa," "And that is he leaves its hair and does not cut like the moustaches from explanation of "He left the beard" when it is said "It multiplies and increases." The meaning, "I'faa ul-lihah" is that the hair of the beard should be grown and should not be cut like the moustaches. The origin of this is from "I'faa'ush-shay,'" meaning that thing which increased and multiplied.

The Fact That The Salaf Used To Allow To Take From The Beard (Up To A Fist-Length)

Ibn Abee Shaybah رحمة اللہ علیه narrates in his mussannaf, (5/225-226):

Ghundar رحمة اللہ علیه narrated to us, from Shu'bah رحمة اللہ علیه, from Mansoor رحمة اللہ علیه who said, "I heard Ataa ibn Abee Rabaah رحمة اللہ علیه (the taabi'ee) saying, 'They used to like to leave the beard except in Hajj or Umrah, and Ibraaheem used to take from the sides of his beard.'"

And he narrates, 'Aa'idh ibn Habeeb رحمة اللہ علیه narrated to us, from Ash'ath رحمة اللہ علیه, from al-Hasan (i.e., al-Basree) رحمة اللہ علیه who said, "They used to allow for what was in excess of what is gripped by the hand of the beard, that it be taken from."

And he narrates, Aboo Aamir al-Aqdee رحمة اللہ علیه narrated to us, from Aflah رحمة اللہ علیه who said, al-Qaasim (the taabi'ee) رحمة اللہ علیه when he shaved his head would take from his beard and moustache."

And he narrates, Alee ibn Haashim رحمة اللہ علیه and Wakee رحمة اللہ علیه narrated to us, from Ibn Abee Laylaa رحمة اللہ علیه, from Naafi رضي الله عنه, from Ibn Umar رضي الله عنهما, "That he used to take what was above a hands grip."

Wakee رحمة اللہ علیه said, "What was in excess of a hands-grip."

And he narrates, Wakee narrated to us, from Aboo Hilaal رحمة اللہ علیه who said, "I asked al-Hasan (i.e., al-Basree) رحمة اللہ علیه and Ibn Seereen رحمة اللہ علیه who both said, "There is no harm for you to take from the length of your beard."

And he narrates, Wakee رحمة اللہ علیه narrated to us, from Sufyaan رحمة اللہ علیه, from Mansoor رحمة اللہ علیه, from Ibraaheem (an-Nakha'ee) رحمة اللہ علیه who said, "They used to take something from and tidy their beards and take from the sides."

When performing wudu (ablution), it is sunna to pass the fingers through the bottom of a large beard with water on the palm of the hand.

The Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) observed this when he made wudu [in that] he took a handful of water underneath his throat and he ran his fingers between his beard. Thereafter, he said, 'This is what my Lord has ordered me.' [Nur al-Idah]

It is said that Imam Abu Yusuf رحمة اللہ علیه held this as sunna, while Imam Abu Hanifa رحمة اللہ علیه held it as permissible. [al-Hidaya]

Washing The Beard In Wudu'


"It is obligatory for water to reach the skin of a person with a small beard," [one of the reasons being that it is easy to wash and poses no hardship.]

"It is not necessary for water to reach the hair that stretches from outside the border of the face." [Nur al-Idah] [1]

[1] That which is outside the perimeter or bounds of the face is not required to be washed. Ibn Hajar (رحمة اللہ علیه) explains in Sharh al-Minhaj: that which grows at the lower part of the chin is not required to be washed, because when it grows, it will be outside the perimeter of the face. As for what grows on the perimeter, one is required to wash what is within the perimeter and not the excess outside the border; and likewise, the hair which grows within the bounds of the face upon the cheeks is required to be washed, though not the surplus outside the bounds. It is for this reason that al-Badai' states that the correct view is that it is compulsory to wash the hair that meets with the cheeks i.e. that which meets with the perimeter, and that which is apparent on the chin, though not the extended part of the beard outside the perimeter. According to Imam ash-Shafi'i (رحمة اللہ علیه), this is required. [Radd al-Muhtar 1/215].

Shaykh Hasan 'Ali حفظه الله said, "The beard is the only visible Sunnah you can take into the grave with you."

An Imaam Who Trims Or Shaves His Beard



Q: Zaid leads the salaah but trims his beard to less than a fist length. What is the ruling with regards to appointing him as an Imam and performing salaah behind him? When this was brought to the attention of the Imam, he took no heed. What length should the beard be? Please explain.

Answer: It is waajib (compulsory) for men to have a beard. This is amongst the important hallmarks of Islaam. Imaam Muhammad رحمه الله writes in his Kitaabul Aathaar that it is Sunnah to have the beard a fist's length, which means that a person may hold his beard (from beneath the chin) and then trim off whatever exceeds the fist. This is also acording to Imaam Abu Haneefah رحمه الله (Durrul Mukhtaar with Shaami, vol 5, p 359)

Durrul Mukhtaar (vol 2, p 155) also states, "To trim the beard to a length less than a fist as the western people and effeminates do, has not been permitted by an of the scholars. Shaving off the beard is a practise of the Hindus of India and non-Arab fire-worshippers."

Faydhul Baari (vol 4, p 380) states that trimming the beard to a length shorter than a fist is Haraam according to all the Imaams of jurisprudence.

Tajnees wal Mazeed and Hidaayah state that it is not permissible to shave the beard because Rasoolullaah صلى الله عليه وسلم instructed that moustaches be trimmed and beards allowed to grow. (Nisaabul Ihtisaab, p 15. See also Maa Laa Budda Minhu, p 130)

The above makes it clear that it is Waajib (compulsory) to grow a beard. It is makrooh tahreemi to trim it to length shorter than a fist, and doing so will render the person a faasiq (flagrant sinner).

Fataawa Daarul Uloom (vol 3, p 128) states that trimming the beard to a length shorter than a fist is tantamount to shaving it off.

Keeping the beard contrary to the Sunnah method opposes the sanctity and importance of the post of an Imaam. One who does so is an open faasiq and it is necessary for him to repent and to grow his beard to the required length. If he does not do so, it will be makrooh for him to be the Imaam, and he should be fired from the post.

Shaami (vol 1, p 523) states that the reason for not appointing a faasiq as an Imaam is that he does not give importance to the injunctions of the Shari'ah. The post of an Imaam will accord him status and honour, whereas he really deserves to be humiliated.

An Imaam must be religious and abstain from public sins. A hadeeth reported by Hadrat 'Abdullaah Ibn 'Umar رضي الله عنهما states that the best of you should be appointed as Imaams, because they serve as ambassadors before Allaah. Another hadeeth states that Rasoolullaah صلى الله عليه وسلم said, "If you wish that your salaah reach the highest levels of acceptance, you should appoint your learned ones as your Imaams so that they could serve as messengers between you and your Rabb." (Tabaraani, as quoted in Sharhun Niqaayah, vol 1, p 86)

Kabeeri (p 479) states that people will be guilty of a sin if they appoint a faasiq as their Imaam.

It is necessary to keep a beard that is at least equal to one's fist in length. The commentator of Mishkaatul Masaabeeh, Shah 'Abdul Haqq Muhaddith Dehlawi رحمه الله writes that it is Waajib (compulsory) to keep a beard that is equal in length to one's fist. (Ashi'atul Lam'aat, vol 1, p 288)

It is Haraam to trim the beard to less than a fist length. (Maa Laa Budda Minhu, p 130)

The Imaam must be fired and if the trustees of the Masjid do not do so, you should perform your salaah at another Masjid. If there is no other Masjid, you will be forced to perform salaah behind this Imaam because it is improper to forsake salaah with jamaa'ah on acount of the emphasis the ahaadeeth place on it. Some Ulemaa state that performing salaah in jamaa'ah is waajib. It must therefore not be left out, but a concerted effort should be made to have the Imaam relieved of his post.

The following appears in Fataawa Daarul Uloom (vol 3, p 181):

Q: Zaid trims his beard to a length shorter than a fist. Is salaah behind him valid?

Answer: Durrul Mukhtaar states that it is Haraam to trim the beard to a length shorter than four fingers. Salaah behind such a person is therefore makrooh, even though the salaah will be valid. However, such a person should not be appointed as an Imaam."

And Allaah سبحانه و تعالى knows best what is most correct.

The definition of a beard given by many scholars is "that which grows on the jawbone" even though some have defined it as "that which grows on the cheeks and the chin". (Ibn Manzur, Lisan al-Arab, 12/259).

Thus, Imam Anwar shah al-Kashmiri (Allah have mercy on him) states in his renowned commentary on Imam al-Bukhari's Sahih, Faydh al-Bari:

"A beard is that which grows on the jawbone. This is the reason why it is known in the Hindi/Urdu language as "Darhi" because it is derived from the root-word "Darh (molar teeth)" for a beard is that which grows (on the outside of the) molar teeth. As regards to the hair which grows on the two cheeks, it is not part of the beard linguistically, even though (some) jurists have disliked removing it, because shaving it with a razor causes the cheeks to become rough, and plucking it weakens the eyesight." (Faydh al-Bari, 4/380)

The great Hanafi jurist (faqih), Imam Ibn Abidin states, quoting from al-Mudmarat:

"There is nothing wrong (la ba's) in removing the hair......of the face as long as it does not cause one to resemble an effeminate." (Radd al-Muhtar, 6/407. The same has been mentioned in al-Fatawa al-Hindiyya, 5/358)

Therefore, hair which grows on the jawbone is included in the beard, and above that the hair which grows on the cheeks is not considered to be part of the beard. As such, it will be permitted to remove hair of the cheeks by shaving or trimming it, as is the practice of many Scholars from Yemen and elsewhere.

It will also be permitted to remove this hair permanently via electrolysis or any other method. In fact, in my personal opinion, this would be better than shaving or plucking the hair, as Imam Anwar Shah al-Kashmiri (Allah have mercy on him) pointed out above that shaving hair from the cheeks is disliked by some Fuqaha because it causes the cheeks to become jagged and rough, whilst plucking it causes one's eyesight to become weak. As such, it would be better to have (and Allah knows best) permanent removal of this hair than to keep shaving it. (In this way, one will also be saving one's time!).
