The Prophet Jesus (peace and blessings be upon him) said,

"Do not speak in abundance other than with the remembrance of Allah, for your hearts will become hard. Verily, a hard heart is far from Allah, but you know not. And do not look at the sins of people as if you are the overseers. Gaze at your sins as if you are slaves. People are of two kinds: the one who is involved (in sin) and the one who is saved (from sin). Have mercy upon those involved and praise Allah Most High for protection (received)." [Malik]

Sayyiduna Abu Bakr as-Siddeeq رضي الله عنه used to put a stone in his mouth, which would prevent him from speaking except when necessary. He would point to his tongue and say, "This is what has brought troubles upon me." So be on guard against your tongue to your utmost ability, for it is the greatest means of your destruction in this world and the next.

Man's conversation apparently falls into three categories:

1) the beneficial, i.e., such speech that has some worldly or religious benefit;

2) the harmful, i.e., such speech that has some worldly or religious harm;

3) and that which is neither beneficial nor harmful.

The hadith describes this third category of speech as la ya'ni (nonsensical, useless). On closer examination it will be realised that this third class of speech belongs also to the second category - harmful talk. If SubhanAllah were uttered during a time squandered in useless talk, then half the pan in the Scale of Deeds would be filled. If some advantageous or righteous act were done during the time spent in futile conversation, it would become an expiation for sin and a medium of salvation in the Hereafter. If not this, then at least such time idly spent could be expended in some worldly benefit.

The Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم said, "A sign of one's Islam being healthy is one's shunning futile acts and futiles talks [shunning that which does not concern him]." (Tirmidhi)

In [Imam al-Ghazzali's رحمه الله] Ihyaa' 'Uloom ad-Deen, it is mentioned that a reckoning will be made (in the Hereafter) of Laa Ya'ni (futile) speech.

Our master Sheikh Shahab uddin Suharwardi (Allah have mercy on him) said,

'It is mentioned that (spiritual) prosperity has ten components. Nine of them are in keeping silent and the tenth in remaining in solitude.'

al-Hafidh Ibn Rajab al-Hanbali رحمه الله said,

"There is disagreement as to whether everything that one says is recorded or whether only that for which there is reward or punishment is recorded, about which there are two famous positions.

'Ali Ibn Abi Talhah رحمه الله said from Sayyiduna Ibn 'Abbaas رضي الله عنهما, 'Everything he says of good and bad, is recorded, to such an extent that his words such as, "I ate, I drank, I went, I came," are recorded until Thursday, when all his words and deeds are shown. Then everything for which there is reward or punishment is confirmed and the rest is discarded. That is His words, Exalted is He:

"Allaah blots out what He wills and confirms (what He wills). And with Him is the Mother of the Book (Al-Lauh Al-Mahfuz)." (Soorah ar-Ra'd, 13:39)' [1]

Yahya Ibn Abi Katheer رحمه الله said, 'A man mounted his donkey and it tripped and fell with him, so he said, "May the donkey perish!" The angel on the right side said, "It is not a good action which I should write," and the angel on the left side said, "It is not a wrong action which I should write." Allaah سبحانه و تعالى revealed to the angel on the left, "Anything which the angel on the right leaves out, then you record it." So that statement was recorded as a wrong action.' [2]

The clear outward meaning of this is that whatever is not a good action is a wrong action, even if it is not going to be punished, for some wrong actions are not punished because they may be atoned for by the avoidance of great wrong actions, but, however, the person lost the time spent on them since it was spent in vain, so that he will be overtaken by regret and sorrow for that on the Day of Rising, which is a type of punishment.

One of the Salaf said, 'The moments of his life will be shown to the son of Adam on the Day of Rising. Every moment in which he did not remember Allaah will drive him to his wit's end in regret.'

at-Tabarani رحمه الله narrated a marfoo' hadeeth of Ummul Mu'mineen 'Aa'isha رضي الله عنها, 'Every moment which passes by the son of Adam in which he does not remember Allaah in a good way will be a cause of regret on the Day of Rising.'" [3] [4]

Shumayt Ibn 'Ajlaan رحمه الله said,

"Son of Adam, as long as you are silent you are safe. If you speak then take your precautions; it is either for you or against you."
