As-Salaam alaikum,
Sometimes one notes that when people or someone are/is engaged in Zikr, repeating the Divine Names, their tongues moving, hearts knocking at the door of Allah Ta'ala, and suddenly, something unusual happens. Their body begins to shake, eyes fill with tears, or their faces light up as if they have seen another world. This sudden overflowing of the heart is what the Sufis call Wajd.

Wajd can be caused by overpowering love, or overwhelming fear or sometimes the sudden taste of Divine closeness. But remember-- it is not about shouting or jumping around to show people. That would be showing off. Real Wajd is pure, hidden and sincere. The Holy Qur'an even points towards this when Allah says: --

''THE SKIN OF THOSE WHO FEAR THEIR LORD TREMBLE FROM IT... ''(Az-Zumar, 39:23)

Here, the Qur'an indicates that sometimes the heart shakes so much that it shows on the skin. Goosebumps, tears, trembling- all of it is part of that Divine encounter. In Arabic, the word Wajd literally means ''to find''! In Wajd, the seeker finds something-- maybe a taste of Allah's closeness, a sweetness of His remembrance or maybe a flash of His Beauty.... And the seeker [then] forgets himself, he becomes lost in that joy, that awe, that burning flame.

Sometimes in this state, the seeker cannot continue his recitation, his body is overtaken by tears, his voice breaks, and he just remains still, absorbed, lost and melted. That too is Wajd. It is like the soul pausing to sip Divine wine, refusing to move forward until it drinks fully.
