‘Abdullah bin Mubārak (rh) said: “The people of deep insight do not feel safe from five matters:
a. How his Lord will take him to account for a sin he had committed in the past.
b. His remaining life and what potentially lies ahead of him of matters that can destroy his religion.
c. Grace and provisions that Allāh سبحانه وتعالى gave him and not knowing whether it is a means for it to lead him, step by step, to his ruin.
d. Misguidance that has been adorned to him and so he sees it as guidance.
e. The gradual deviation of the heart until it deviates faster than the blinking of the eye such that he could lose his religion without even realising.”
(Shu’ab al Imān of al Bayhaqi)
Indeed, it is so as observed by Sayyadi Abdullah IbnMubarak, may Allah be Merciful to him. Looked at from another perspective, we can safely say that the people of deep insight are those of restraining intelligence as carried in a certain Hadith quoted by Imam al-Qushayri, where the Noble Messenger of Allah, Sallallahu alaihi Wasallam, said:--
"THE SUPPORT OF THE HOUSE IS ITS FOUNDATION AND THE SUPPORT OF THE FAITH IS THE KNOWLEDGE
OF ALLAH MOST HIGH, CERTITUDE AND A RESTRAINING INTELLIGENCE." When A'isha, may Allah be pleased
with her, asked the Prophet: 'What is the restraining intelligence (al-'aql al-qami)'? He answered: "REFRAINING
FROM DISOBEDIENCE TO ALLAH AND EAGERNESS TO OBEY HIM."
See al-Qushayri's "EPISTLE ON SUFISM", for more on this.
This cannot be undone and I am sure it will be greatly appreciated.
