From the teachings of Shaykh Muhammed Saleem Dhorat (hafizahullah)
To refrain from sin is undoubtedly very difficult in the initial stages. Often one gives up despite the desire to become a Muttaqee and refrain from the disobedience of Allah subhaanahu wataala.
Take the example of a person learning how to drive a car. The first few lessons are very difficult but as one perseveres, controlling the steering wheel, using the various pedals and keeping an eye on the road at the same time becomes less daunting and in fact after some lessons it actually becomes quite easy until finally one can remain busy in conversing, observing everything outside and at the same time having complete control of the steering wheel and the pedals. Now if this person was to give up after the first few lessons would he ever achieve a driving license? The answer is no. He would end up using public transport for the rest of his life. In fact knowing that being able to drive is an absolute necessity, a person will try again and again even after failing ten driving tests. Not just that but he will turn to Allah subhaanahu wataala and ask for assistance and will even get others to make the same dua. This is so in all fields. One perseveres knowing that success will follow only if one exerts effort.
So why dont we exert the same effort on the nafs and refrain from sin and disobedience? It will undoubtedly be difficult in the beginning however it will get easier and easier until it will become a part of you and this will only happen after effort and striving. Then and only then will one become a Wali (friend of Allah) and a true Muslim.

From "Du'a - the essence of worship" by Shaykh Zulfiqar Ahmad (db)
Some friends say: "Hadrat! We make a lot of du'a but it is not accepted". Students many times say that they are in difficulties. Sometimes, the Ulama even say: "There are obstacles and difficulties. Please make du'a. I have been making du'a for a long period of time but signs of acceptance have not become apparent."
At such times I teach my friends a secret for the acceptance of du'as. I will teach it to you also. If you practice upon it, Insha Allah, you will no longer need to search for the Isme A'zam. You will see it before your eyes just as you complete saying the words. I have experienced this not a hundred times but thousands of times. The action is small but the results is great. If only we could understand the reality of this. Today, you too will come to know the method for the acceptance of du'as. The du'as of the pious are accepted. The pious are not made out of gold, neither are they any superhuman creation. They are also human. The difference is that they have removed the intention of sin from their hearts and they have handed themselves completely over to Allah. They ask with the same cry and bow before the same door. The cry with which the disciple asks, is the same as the cry of the spiritual guide. The door at which the student begs, is the same as the door before which the teacher begs. The spiritual guide and teacher receive because they have eradicated sin from their lives.
The secret for the acceptance of du'as that the author has learnt from his elders and experienced thousands of times may seem small. You may sometimes listen to a simple word and laugh, saying that this is nothing special. However, for a person who finds relief in a small dose of medicine, this will be the best medication in the whole world for him. He will not look at the value of the small dose but will see the medication that has granted him relief. Listen to this pointer with the ears of your heart and try it out yourself!
Whenever a time comes in life when you have the opportunity to sin and you refrain, due to the fear of Allah, at that very second, make a du'a to Allah. Allah will accept your du'a at that very moment.

From the teachings of Shaykh Muhammad Saleem Dhorat (Hafizahullah) Our Respected Shaykh explains that Allah Taaalaa has blessed us with Aql, which gives us the power to differentiate between Haqq (Truth) and Baatil (Falsehood). When one uses this power to search for the truth i.e. to recognise Allahs Tawheed (His Oneness) and to accept Risaalat (Prophethood), Allah will bestow one with the truth of Imaan. If one does not search and refuses to listen, ones power of differentiating between the Haqq and the Baatil will be destroyed by Allah and one will be left in the darkness of ignorance. Allah will leave one in the company of the Shayaateen, (from which we beg Allahs refuge). Shaykh then elaborates with examples which touch the heart! Imagine a person in a dark place which has many closed windows. Someone keeps opening them but the person persistently closes them. Eventually the person opening the windows will get fed up and leave the person to dwell in the darkness. The light is there and this person could have had it but he is left in the darkness.

By JULAYBIB As Salaam Alaykum. Once Qais Bin Saad Khazraji (ra) fell ill, but few of his friends came to enquire about his health. He was amazed, especially when he missed those who had visited his house regularly when he had been healthy. He asked about it from his family and they said, " Almost everybody owes you something and they feel embarassed about visiting you without paying you what they owe." At this Qais (ra) said " Cursed be this wealth for it separates a man from his friends." He then asked somebody to proclaim all around the city that Qais had absolved all his debtors from paying there debts. After the declaration people came in such large numbers that there was always a crowd in his house. Something to think about: Imagine our situation we do somebody a small favour we hold them accountable for life. If we fall out or have an argument with one our friend's we then proceed to advertise to the whole world the amount of favours we had done for that former friend. We cannot even behave sincerely or with generosity , towards our closest friends often we will proceed to humiliate an individual in front of people by saying "I did you so and so favour". We expect others to be grateful to us, yet we dont even make one Sajda in gratitude to ALLAH.

by JULAYBIB (sunniforum) As Salaam Alaykum. This thread is intended mostly as reminder for myself I hope Inshallah that others will also derive benefit, and contribute with their thoughts on self reformation. A man was on his death bed, Someone asked him to give some wise counsel before he departed, the world he Said. " When I was young I wanted to change the world and solve its problems, As I got older I realized that perhaps I should lower my sights, I thought I would be better served in changing my country as time went on I realized that people of country could not be changed. I decided to change the people of my town , but they also did not wish to change, When I reached my old age I thought I would try changing my Family, here also I found my endeavors go to waste, try as I might my family members would not change. " Now that I am on my death bed, I have realized that if I had sought to improve myself, and removed my own defects, then perhaps my family members would have been influenced. Then seeing the behavior of my family people of my town would have been influenced. By seeing the spiritual change and improvement of the people of my town, the people of my country would have been influenced. And perhaps through the people of my country the world may have been influenced." * Source Unknown.

From the teachings of Shaykh Muhammad Saleem Dhorat (hafizahullah)
In every religion and every system people are taught that everyone has Rights, including Islam. However the difference between Islam and other religions / systems is that the beautiful teachings of our beloved Prophet sallallaahu alyhi wasallam say that we should fulfil everyones rights even if our rights are not fulfilled while the non Islamic way is to expect and even demand those rights to be fulfilled and whether or not we do the same is of no importance.
Islam teaches us that if we do not fulfil our duties to others, punishment in the Hereafter will be our lot and on the other hand, if our rights as a wife / husband or parent / child etc. are not fulfilled and we remain patient on this we shall reap great rewards in the Hereafter. We should therefore be fulfilling everyones rights and not be concentrating on demanding our rights. In fact Islam teaches us that Allahs mercy is on those who forgo their rights as in the case of a person who kindly extends the time for repayment of a debt or even forgives it altogether.
In abandoning the beautiful teachings of Islam and in emulation of other systems we have become of the takers whereas in times gone by people used to be givers!

From the lectures of Shaykh Muhammad Saleem Dhorat (hafizahullah) IQRA! / READ! The first lesson with Allah Taala as the teacher and the Prophet sallallaahu alayhi wasallam as the student begins in the Cave of Hira with the instruction to Read. No mention is made of Hajj, Salaat, Saum or Zakat and no resources are mentioned for any worldly benefit. The very first order is to acquire knowledge and the means or resource mentioned is the pen. This shows the importance of acquiring ilm because ilm is Deen and Deen is Ilm. There is no Deen without ilm. It is the door to attaining the whole Deen and success depends on practicing the whole Deen. HUNGER, A BLESSING

On the authority of Abu Dharr al-Ghifaaree, from the Prophet sallallaahu 'alayhi wasallam is that among the sayings he relates from His Lord is that He said: O My servants, I have forbidden oppression for Myself and have made it forbidden amongst you, so do not oppress one another O My servants, all of you are astray except for those I have guided, so seek guidance of Me and I shall guide you. O My servants, all of you are hungry except for those I have fed, so seek food of Me and I shall feed you.

Shaykh Muhammad Saleem Dhorat explained some verses of the Glorious Quran which were an eye-opener and a stark reality facing the Muslim ummah today. With all my shortcomings and limited understanding I am going to try and convey his message and I pray that it becomes a means of our rectification and attaining Allah Taaalas pleasure for all of us. Aameen The verses, according to my understanding, refer to a village which was blessed by Allah Taaala with aman (peace), aafiyat (safety) and abundant rizq (provision) from all sides. One doesnt need anything else if one can live without any fear of any form, good health and enough to fill ones stomach. This was exactly our condition here in England until recently. Shaykh said that today Muslims feel fear (regardless of whether there is anything to fear or not). Illnesses, anxieties, worries etc are on such an increase that every household is affected. There was a time when Muslims felt no fear and if a person was affected by a simple thing like flue it was a major thing for the community, whereas today if we are told someone has been affected by cancer, it is nothing major! Hadrat then said that we still have abundant rizq
but what if we were deprived of this blessing and were left in poverty and need as well? Why were the people of the village deprived of the blessings of aman, aafiyat and abundant rizq? The cause was disobedience to Allah Taaala, and this very disobedience is the cause of our plight today. In fact it is due to the love our Allah has for us that He sends us these anxieties and worries, beckoning us towards Him, trying to save us from the path of destruction that we seem to have chosen. We need to open our eyes and look deep within ourselves instead of pointing the finger at others, and we need to rectify our selves with the help of a Shaykh and live by the Quran and the beautiful way shown by our beloved Prophet Muhammad sallallaahu alayhi wasallam. May Allah Taaala grant us His protection from every calamity and may He turn all our fears into peace, aameen.

Commenting on the verse about friends turning to enemies on the Day of Judgement, Shaykh Muhammad Saleem Dhorat said that friendships can be one of four types. 1. ROOHAANI: in this type of friendship there is a spiritual connection which originates from the time when all the rooh of all the creation were in aalame arwah or the world of spirits. The roohs of all the people were present there in great groups where the roohs of the good and the pious inclined towards each other as did the roohs of the bad and the evil. That is the reason why sometimes when you meet someone who is a total stranger, you incline towards them and feel as though youve known them for a long time while there is no connection with someone in your own neighbourhood, whom you have known all your life. The Ambiya AS and the pious are included in this category. 2. QALBI: this type of friendship is to do with the heart, whereby you feel love for the pleasure of Allah Taala, i.e. you feel love for someone with Ilm, taqwa etc. and wealth doesnt come into it even if they are rich. 3. AQLI: a friendship based on the intellect and worldly gain i.e. business partners. There are more of these friendships in the world then the first two. This type of friendship can become beneficial if the relationship develops to a Qalbi friendship based on Taqwa. 4. SHAHWAANI: is friendships based on fulfilling desires, i.e. physical desires, wealth, name, fame etc.
