Scholarly Consensus: Faj’r begins at 18 degrees

26th March 2015

Asslamo Allaikum Wa Rahmatullahi Wa Barakatuh,

This is an extensive article on the subject of start of Faj’r and commencement of Fasting. You are requesting to help in safeguarding the fasting and acts of worship of our Muslim Brothers and Sisters by forwarding this link to as many people as you can.

Jazakallahu Khayran

Conclusions:

  1. Based on near unanimous opinion of Ulama and observations in United Kingdom and Canada 18 degrees should be adopted for Subh Sadiq (true dawn) i.e. commencement of fasting and Faj'r Salah. Click here to read a detailed article on how to calculate these times for your location.
  2. When 18 degrees is not present, Aqrabul Ayyam (nearest day), Aqrabul Bilaad (nearest city) or Nisf ul Lail (half of night) should be adopted. Using Sab’al Layl or 1/7th of the night is a manifest error.

Key Ulama endorsing conclusions:

  1. Shaykh (Maulana) Ashraf Ali Thanwi (RA) [1863-1943]
  2. Shaykh (Mufti) Muhammad Shafi Usmani (RA) [1897-1976]

Asalamualaykum

please see the new reseach of iritis. They have a long pdf on there website

It was understood from interrogating the classical texts of both fiqh and astronomy and a large number of experiments carried out and reported in peer-reviewed journals, 15o was the correct position for al-Fajr al-Ṣādiq.

I think its by mufti amjad (student of mufti sacha)

Has plenty of proof and details of mushahada carried out this year.

Please read and understand it proper before commenting

(I think Moulana qasimi is of the following opinion

"18° cannot be considered as al-Fajr al-Ṣādiq as there is no light before it, in other words the al-Fajr al-Kādhib cannot exist. 

By quoting the commentary on al-Bayrūnī’s text he states that he is referring to al-Fajr al-Kādhib not al-Fajr al-Ṣādiq as understood by others. 

Imām Ibn ʿĀbidīn as quoted above states 3° difference between the two Fajrs, if we accept 18° as al-Fajr al-Ṣādiq, then we would have to assume 21° is al-Fajr al-Kādhib. There is no such phenomenon at that depression)
Blogger's Reply:
W-Salam, Jzk for pointing out I have read it multiple times and understood it. This blog quotes the opinions of many Scholars on a global and National level so it is also an opinion. The 3 degree rule by Imam Ibn Abideen (RA) is also an opinion, it is neither Qur’aan/Hadeeth nor a hard scientific fact which can be used as a yardstick. Other Ulama will respond to Mufti Amjad but I (personally as a nobody) am happy with his conclusions on page 49 which says to stop Sehri (Suhur) at 18 degrees but pray on 15 degrees…sound opinion and balanced.
