French, Charlie Hebdo & the real face of freedom of Speech

8th January 2015

Asslamo Allaikum Wa Rahmatullahi Wa Barakatuh,

Our world has been plunged into grief at the loss of life in both America & France yesterday (07th of January 2014). The events in both countries were sudden, tragic, terrible, shocking, despicable and illegal.

  1. In Colorado (America) the perpetrator is alleged to be a white male so the media promptly downgraded the atrocious (wanton) act of bombing as hate crime!
  2. In Paris (France) the alleged perpetrators are Muslims and there is (unfortunate) loss of life.

I as a Muslim try to live by life by the commands of Allah (God Almighty) as contained in the Qur’aan and the sayings of Prophet Muhammad (Peace be Upon Him) and one of the most fundamental instructions of Allah is to uphold Justice.

[4:135] O you who believe, be upholders of justice - witnesses for Allah, even though against (the interest of) your selves or the parents, and the kinsmen. One may be rich or poor, Allah is better caretaker of both. So do not follow desires, lest you should swerve. If you twist or avoid (the evidence), then, Allah is all-aware of what you do.

Therefore I condemn all acts wholeheartedly and unreservedly where innocent civilians are killed in cold blood, it is despicable and detestable.

I however see no need to apologise for the actions of “supposed” Muslims or to apologise for my religion anymore then the need for any Christian to apologise for their faith for the barbarity of Anders Behring Breivik which killed 70+ innocent civilians. Anders Behring Breivik left behind a 1500 page manifesto about his Christian Faith but I am sane, mature and rational enough to know that Christianity doesn’t call for gunning down or bombing innocent men, women and children on a beach!

I share the grief of others and call for the swift apprehension of those who perpetrated this crime as clear from my tweets:

But in this blog I want to talk about 4 recent facts about the French press, Charlie Hebdo & Closer:

Fact 1 (1990):

Gayssot Act of 1990 makes it illegal in France to deny or mock the Holocaust.

Fact 2 (2008):

L'affaire Sine of Charlie Hebdo was charged and tried for Anti-Semitism for writing that Jean Sarkozy (son of then President) Nicolas Sarkozy converted to Judaism to pursue social success.

Fact 3 (2012):

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have launched legal action against the French magazine Closer over printing naked pictures of Kate Middleton. The British media (including the sun) turned down these pictures out of respect for the young couple!

Fact 3 (2014):

French actress Julie Gayet wins damages from Closer magazine over Francois Hollande ‘affair’ photographs.

Million Euro Question to the French?

Decency prohibits us from mocking any religions and hurting anyone’s sentiments. Holocaust was a sad and tragic event in the history of humanity and again basic human decency and dignity prevents us from mocking or even trivialising other people’s suffering but “O Ye Guardians of Human Decency

You obviously have limits on freedom of speech and freedom of press when it comes to privacy, Jews, Judaism, Holocaust. Do I need to spell out the obvious question, here?
