http://www.twitter.com/servethedeenNowadays, we not only engage in useless, futile talk in our gatherings, we also indulge in major sins such as backbiting and slander. During weddings or while visiting the bereaved or the sick, people assemble for hours on end and waste time in unprofitable talk.
Backbiting has become so common amongst our daily social gatherings that we barely even notice this grave sin taking place. This is one of the reasons why it has been referred to in a Hadeeth as being 'worse than adultery.' The fact is that after committing adultery, the sinner acknowledges that he/she has committed a grave sin and therefore we hope they will repent. When one indulges in backbiting they are not even aware that this sin has been committed. Thus it is highly unlikely that they will repent for this sin.
