assalamualaiku,

I wanted to know when one prays janaza namaz on a field or say outside does he have to take off his shoes or can one keep them on?

Answer

In the name of Allah

To read the Janaza Salaah (Funeral prays) with shoes on is permissible as long as one is sure that the shoes are free from najaasat (dirtiness and filth).

It is narrated from Sa`id bin Yazid Al-Azdi who says: I asked Anas bin Malik whether Rasulullah had ever, prayed with his shoes on. He replied "Yes." (Bukhari 1.383)

The above mentioned Hadtih speaks of the general daily five times Salaah (in which there is prostration). The shoes of Rasulullah were made of simpler material which did not hinder the Sujud (prostration). However, it must be remembered that, one should not pray any Salaah which has the act of Sujud wearing the contemporary shoes available today.

Due to that fact that modern day shoes are made with thick material which will obstruct the person from fulfilling the correct posture of Sujud (prostration). Furthermore, today we have the added luxury of carpet which brings more ease to us in performing our Salaah, and in order to keep the carpet clean and pure we should remove our shoes and read Salaah.

In conclusion Janaza Salaah does not contain Sujud, hence it is permissible to read while one is wearing contemporary shoes provided they are free from Najasat.

And Allah the Sublime knows best
