Salaams Are we allowed to pray from the Quran before the mayyit has been given Ghusl? What if the deceased is still in hospital? Are we allowed to start praying at home before the Ghusl is given?

Answer:

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ

Yes. You are allowed to read the Quran as soon as the person dies. But it is makruh (disliked in Islam) to do so in the immediate presence of the mayyit (deceased), before the mayyit has be given a Ghusl, althought it can be recited from afar. (Norul Idha Kitabun Janaaiz, Shami Vol 1).

If the Quran recitation is taking place anywhere besides the immediate presence of the mayyit then this is not makruh. If the Ghusl has been given then there is no harm in doing so in either situation.

It should be acknowledged that Eisal-e-Sawaab by means of Quranic recitation is Mustahab. If someone makes this into a fardh then it can become a bidat (innovation). Also it should be recognized that Eisal-e-Sawaab can be conducted in other forms also as well as Quranic recitation. such as reciting Tasbih, Zikr of Allah, giving something in Charity, making Dua, etc.

It is narrated from Sayyidinah Abu Hurairah Radiallahu Anhu, that Rasullulah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasslam, "Among those actions and good deeds (the rewards of which) a believer will recover after his death, are the sacred knowledge he taught an spread, the pious child he left behind, a copy of the Quran which he left as a legacy, the Masjid which he constructed or a house which he built for traveller, a stream which he set flowing, or voluntary charity (sadaqah) which he gave from his wealth he alive and healthy, will continue to reach him after his death."

And Allah the Most Merciful knows best
