When a women is out due to necessity to do shopping for the family, is it forbidden for her to answer the salaam of a non mahram shop keeper she comes into contact with? Also, how should one limit their speech when out and about in situations where the voice must be used?

Waalaikumussalam warahmatullahi wabarakatuh.
Bismillahir rahmaanir rahim.

Nabi SAW has said : And for the tongue, its (means of) fornication is speech. (Muslim)

If the shop keeper makes salam to you, you should reply the salam as this is wajib upon you but in a very low voice in such a manner that the shop keeper may not hear. One should limit one's speech in a way that only at the time of dire need should one answer or ask a question and nothing more as it is haram to speak without a need to the opposite sex.

And Allah knows best.

Wassalam.
