Salamou aliakoum warahmatoulah,
I am a msulim lady living and working in dubai.

In couple of months, my job contract with my current company will end and there is no chance to renew it. The only one job I could find in Dubai now is in a Tobacco Company which sell cigarettes in the Middle East.
My question is: Is working in a Tobacco Company halal or haram in the Islam religion? knowing that without this job, I will be obliged to leave to my home country where life conditions are less.

Thank you in advance wassalaikou warahmatou lah,
Zakia Bahjou

Assalamu'alaikum w.w.

Many scholars agree that cigarette smoking is Haraam
or Markrooh-Tahrimi at the least. Contemporary scholars (especially Arab Ulama) have
given the Fatwaa of Haraam or Makrooh-e-Tahrimi and I
believe they are in a better position to 'upgrade' the
severity because of the medical research available on
the harms of smoking.

Our Akaabireen who gave the Fatwaa of
Makrooh-e-Tanzihi did not have access to this
information and I am quite sure had they been provided
with details such as lung cancer, heart disease, etc,
they would most cetainly have adopted a tougher
stance.

On this basis, it will not be permissible for you to
continue working in this tobacco company as it
contravenes the Islamic principle of the prohibition
of cooperating in acts of sin.

Therefore, unless you have no other means of
sustaining yourself in your country, my advise is that
you place your trust in Allah (SWT) and leave.

Allah (SWT) has promised ease and comfort to those who
adopt Taqwa. Likewise, He has promised to provide
sustenance from previously unknown places.

May Allah (SWT) make it easy for you. Ameen,

Wassalam,
Mufti Abdullah
