salaam alaikum. please could you tell me if:when a child is born,and there is nobody available to whisper the azaan into the babys ear.would it be permissble to play a recording of the azaan into the babys right ear?as i am aware it is not possible to be done by women,or the mother. please could you anwer this question for me.jazakhula
A recorded Azaan does not suffice as a Shar'ee Azaan and the Sunnat of giving Azaan in the newborn babys ear will not be fulfilled.[1]
If no Male family member who is a mahram of the mother is available nor a Muslim Male is available; in which case he{the Male} will perform the Azaan and Iqaamah not in the presence of the mother maintaining modesty,privacy and morality, it would be permissible for a woman to perform Azaan in the right ear of the child and Iqamah in the left ear of the child, the mother will only be allowed to perform the Azaan and Iqamah if she is free from post-natal bleeding(Nifaas), if no Muslim Male is available[2]
"Regarding women it is disliked for them to give the Azaan, similarly the Iqaamah{for Salaah} as narrated from Hadhrat Anas (Radhi Allahu Anhu) and Hadhrat Ibn Umar (Radhi Allahu Anhu) that they are both disliked for them, as their state is based on concealment (maintaining Satr)."
In Ahsan Ul Fatawa it describes the Azaan performed upon a newborn saying:
"كمّاً مثل اذان الصلوٰة ہے مگر كيفاً اس ميں رفع صوت نہيں الخ
[احسن الفتاوىٰ ، باب الأذان والإقامة- جلد ٢ صفحة ٢٧٨ -كراچى]
"it is the same manner as Azaan of Salah, however in style it differs as the voice is not raised"
As there is no raising of the voice and satr is still maintained, thus it would be permissible for a woman to perform Azaan and Iqamaah upon the new born baby, if no Male is available.

It states in Khayr ul Fatawa
"اصل يہ ہے كہ نومولود كے كان ميں كوئي مرد صالح اذان دے تاكہ صورتاً بھي كراہيت نہ ہو- مراقي ميں ہے-
{وكرها أي الأذان والإقامة للنساء لما روي عن ابن عمر من كراهتهما لهن} (ص١٠٥)-
اس كى تعليل علامہ طحطاوى (رحـ) يہ بيان كرتے ہيں- { قوله: "من كراهتهما لهن" لأن مبنى حالهن على الستر ورفع صوتهن حرام}

" The rule is that Azaan in the ear of a newborn baby should be given by a pious man, so that it doesn't seem Makruh, it is stated in Maraqi Al Falah (Sharh Nur ul idaah);
It is disliked i.e. Azaan & Iqamah for women as it is narrated from Hadhrat Ibn Umar (Radhi Allahu Anhu) they are both disliked (azaan and iqamah) for women
The reason for this Imam Tahatawi has explained is "this is based upon their state of remaining in Satr and that raising their voice is impermissible"
The implication from this reasoning is that a woman can give Azaan in the ear of a newborn baby as the voice isn't raised in this nor is it against Satr."
It states in Fatawa Mahmoodiyah;
"زچہ خانہ ميں تولد كے وقت اگر كوئى مرد موجود نہ ہو تو عورت كو يہ اذان و اقامت كہنا درست ہے...... اگر كوئى نہ ہو تو بچہ كى ماں بهى كہہ سكتى ہے اگر وه حالتِ نفاس ميں نہ ہو-"

" In the maternity ward, at the time of giving birth if there is no male available, then the woman can perform this Azaan & Iqaamah.......
If there is nobody present the newborn baby's mother can say it, if she is not in the state of Nifaas (post- natal bleeding)"
It is Makruh e tahrimi to give Azaan and Iqamah in the state of impurity as stated in Radd ul Muhtaar:
