Waalaikumussalam warahmatullahi wabarakatuh.
Bismillahir rahmaanir rahim.

Allah Taala has mentioned in the Noble Quraan:

'...And give glad tidings to the patient ones - those who when afflicted by a calamity say "Indeed to Allah we belong and indeed to Him we shall return." It is those who will be awarded blessings and mercy from their Lord and it is those who are guided.' (Surah Al-Baqarah, verses 155 - 157)

It comes in a hadith whereby Umm Salamah reported that Rasulullah SAW said:

'Whenever a Muslim is afflicted by a calamity and he says what Allah has commanded him, "Inna lillahi wa inna ilaihi raji'un. Allahumma aajirni fi musibati wa akhlif li khairan minha" (Certainly to Allah we belong and certainly to Him shall we return. Oh Allah! Reward me for my affliction and replace it for me something that is better.) except that Allah will replace for him with something better.'

Indeed death is something inevitable and we shall all go through it one day by the will of Allah. It is something that most of the time strikes us with grief and fear when it afflicts people especially our dear and loved ones. There is nothing wrong in grieving or mourning over the deceased but it must be done according to the Shariah (ie. not more than 3 days unless for a wife whose husband passed away, no wailing, no tearing of the clothes etc.). Not everyone has the strength to exercise patience when death occurs within the family hence the Quraanic verse above.

From the mentioned Quraanic verses and hadith, as a Muslim, it only befits us to have patience and hope for reward from Allah when a calamity befalls us. Therefore, Rasulullah SAW has adviced us to read the above stated dua whenever difficulty afflicts us, death in this case. May Allah reward our efforts on trying to practice patience during an affliction.

And Allah knows best.

Wassalam.
