Images on collector coins

Is it permissible to collect and sell rare or bullion coins that have images on them such as the Krugerrand. What about the American gold eagle which has an image of Liberty which is based on Libertas, the Roman "goddess". Many coins also have an image of the queen Elizabeth?

It is not permissible to collect and to sell such coins that have images on them, due to the prohibition in the Hadith.

If the coins and notes are kept due to necessity which are used in day to day transactions then it is عفو (forgiven).

However, if the collectable coins don't have any images on them then it will be permissible to collect and to sell them for a higher amount due to its historical and sentimental value.  

Also, if they are not collectable coins and the currency are the same then they are to be sold and exchanged equally. otherwise any excess on either side would be Riba.


وظاهركلام النووى في شرح مسلم: الاجماع على تحريم تصويرالحيوان وقال : وسواء صنعه لما يمتهن أولغيره فصنعته حرام بكل حال لأن فيه مضاهاة لخلق الله تعالى وسواء كان فى ثوب أودرهم أوبساط أواناء أو حائط وغيرها الخ (الدر المختارمع ردالمحتار ج 1 ص 647  

الضرورات تبيح المحظورات: أي أن الأشياء الممنوعة تعامل كاالأشياء المباحة وقت الضرورت (شرح المجلة ج1 ص26

ففى مثل هذه الفلوس يمكن أن يتصور ما قاله الشيخان رح ويبدو أن فى التفاضل فى مثل هذه الفلوس سعة على قولهما , وأما الفلوس التي يقصد بها التبادل دون خصوص المادة فلا ينبغي المساهلة فى أمرها فانها من أقوى الذرائع الى الربا ولله سبحانه وتعالى أعلم ( أحكام أوراق النقود والعملات محمد تقي عثماني
