Imam Muhammad رحمه الله said: "There should be no recitation behind the Imam whether he reads aloud or not; and this is the purport of the majority of narrations and it is the verdict of Imam Abu Hanifa, may Allaah سبحانه و تعالى have mercy on him."

115. Imam Muhammad Ibn al-Hasan رحمه الله said: "'Ubaydullah Ibn 'Umar Ibn Hafs Ibn 'Aasim Ibn 'Umar Ibn al-Khattab رضي الله عنهم informed us from Naafi' رحمة اللہ علیه from Sayyiduna 'Abdullah Ibn 'Umar رضي الله عنهما, who said, 'The Imam's recitation suffices for whoever prays behind him.'"

Imam Muhammad Ibn al-Hasan رحمه الله said: "'Abdur Rahmaan Ibn 'Abdullah al-Ma'oodi رحمه الله told us, 'Anas Ibn Seereen رحمه الله informed me from Sayyiduna 'Abdullah Ibn 'Umar رضي الله عنهما, that he was asked about reading behind the Imam. He said, 'The recitation of the Imam suffices you.'"

Imam Muhammad Ibn al-Hasan رحمه الله said: "Imam Abu Hanifah رحمه الله informed us saying, 'Abul Hasan Moosa Ibn Abi 'Aa'isha رحمه الله narrated to us from 'Abdullaah Ibn Shaddaad Ibn al-Haad رحمه الله from Jaabir Ibn 'Abdullaah رضي الله عنه from the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم, that he said, "Whoever prays behind the Imam, then the recitation of the Imam is a recitation for him."'"

Imam Muhammad Ibn al-Hasan رحمه الله said: "The Shaykh Abu 'Ali رحمه الله narrated to us saying, 'Mahmood Ibn Muhammad al-Marwazi رحمه الله narrated to us saying, "Sahl Ibn al-'Abbaas at-Tirmidhi رحمه الله narrated to us saying, 'Isma'eel Ibn 'Ulayyah رحمه الله informed us from Ayyoob رحمه الله from Ibn az-Zubayr رضي الله عنهما from Jaabir Ibn 'Abdullah رضي الله عنه, who said, "The Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم said, 'Whoever prays behind the Imam, then the recitation of the Imam is a recitation for him.'"'"'"

119. Imam Muhammad Ibn al-Hasan رحمه الله said: "Usamah Ibn Zayd al-Madani رحمه الله informed us, 'Salim Ibn 'Abdullah Ibn 'Umar رضي الله عنهم narrated to us, "Ibn 'Umar رضي الله عنهما would not recite behind the Imam."

So I asked al-Qasim Ibn Muhammad رحمه الله about that and he said, "If you leave out reciting, then a people whose ways are followed also left it out; and if you recite, then a people whose ways are followed also recited."

And al-Qasim رحمه الله was of those who used not to recite.'"

He said: "Keep silent, for the prayer requires your attention; the Imam will do that for you."'"

Imam Muhammad Ibn al-Hasan رحمة اللہ علیه said: "Muhammad Ibn Aban Ibn Salih al-Qurashi رحمة اللہ علیه informed us from Hammad رحمة اللہ علیه from Ibraheem an-Nakha'ee رحمة اللہ علیه from 'Alqamah Ibn Qays رحمة اللہ علیه, that when behind the Imam, Sayyiduna 'Abdullah Ibn Mas'ood رضي الله عنه would not recite whether the Imam read aloud or silently, neither in the first two [rak'ahs] nor in the last two; but when he prayed alone he would read the Opening [Fatihah] of the Book and a surah in the first two [rak'ahs], and would not read anything in the last two."

Imam Muhammad Ibn al-Hasan رحمه الله said: "Isra'eel رحمه الله informed us: 'Moosa Ibn Abi 'Aa'isha رحمه الله narrated to me from 'Abdullah Ibn Shaddaad Ibn al-Haad رحمه الله, who said, 'The Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم led 'Asr and man recited behind him, so the man next to him nudged him. When he had prayed he said, "Why did you nudge me?" He said, "The Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم was leading you, so I was loath that you should recite behind him." Hearing this, the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said, "Whoever prays with an Imam, then the Imam's recitation suffices for him."'"

Imam Muhammad Ibn al-Hasan رحمه الله said: "Dawood Ibn Qays al-Farraa' al-Madani رحمه الله informed us that one of the sons of Sayyiduna Sa'd Ibn Abi Waqqaas رضي الله عنه mentioned to him that Sa'd رضي الله عنه said, 'I wish that he who recites behind the Imam had a burning coal in his mouth.'"
