100. Imam Malik (رحمه الله) informed us: "Naafi' (رضي الله عنه) narrated to us that when Sayyiduna 'Adullah Ibn 'Umar (رضي الله عنهما) began the prayer, he would raise his hands to his shoulders; and when he raised his head from bowing he would raise them less than that."

Imam Muhammad رحمة اللہ علیه said, "The Sunnah is that a man should say Allaahu Akbar in his prayer whenever he lowers himself and whenever he raises himself. When he goes down into prostration he should say Allaahu Akbar; and when he goes down into the second prostration he should say Allaahu Akbar.

As for raising the hands in the prayer: he should raise his hands to his ears once only when beginning the prayer. After that he should nor raise [them] at all in the prayer. All of this is the verdict of Imam Abu Hanifa رحمة اللہ علیه, and concerning this there are many narrations."

34. Recitation In The Prayer Behind The Imam

111. Imam Malik رحمه الله informed us: "az-Zuhri رحمه الله narrated to us from Ibn Ukaymah al-Laythi رحمه الله from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayra رضي الله عنه, that the Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم finished a prayer in which he recited aloud and said, 'Did any of you recite with me?' So one man said, 'I did Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم.'" [Abu Hurayra رضي الله عنه] said, "So the Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم said, 'Why am I being competed with in respect to the Qur'an?'" So the people desisted from reciting with the Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم in the prayers in which he recited aloud from the time when they heard that."

114. Imam Malik رحمه الله informed us: "Al-'Alaa' Ibn 'Abdur Rahmaan Ibn Ya'qoob رحمه الله, the mawla of al-Huraqah رحمه الله informed me that he heard Abu's-Saa'ib رحمه الله, the mawla of Hishaam Ibn Zuhrah رحمه الله, say, 'I heard Abu Hurayra رضي الله عنه say, "I heard the Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم say, 'Whoever prays a prayer in which he does not recite the Opening [Fatiha] of the Book, then it is defective, it is defective, it is defective, an imperfection.'"'

[Abu's-Saa'ib رحمه الله] said, 'I said, "Abu Hurayra رضي الله عنه, sometimes I will be behind the Imam." So he squeezed my forearm and said, 'O Persian, recite it to yourself. I heard the Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم say, 'Allaah, Exalted is He, said, "The prayer has been apportioned between Me and My slave as two halves; so half of it is for Me and half of it is for My slave; and My slave shall have what he asks for."

The Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم said, 'Recite! The slave says, "Praise belongs to Allaah Lord of the all the Worlds"; Allaah سبحانه و تعالى says, "My slave praised Me." The slave says, "The All-Merciful the Most-Merciful"; Allaah سبحانه و تعالى says, "My slave extols Me." The slave says, "King of the Day of Judgement"; Allaah سبحانه و تعالى says, "My slave glorifies Me." The slave says, "You alone we worship and You alone we ask for help"; Allaah سبحانه و تعالى says, "This ayah is between me and My slave, and My slave shall have what he asks for." The slave says, "Guide us on the Straight Path, the Path of those whom You have blessed, not of those with anger on them, nor of the misguided"; Allaah سبحانه و تعالى says, "These are for My slave and My slave shall have what he asks for."'"'"
