38. Saying Aameen In The Prayer
136. Imam Malik رحمه الله informed us: "az-Zuhri رحمه الله informed me from Sa'eed Ibn al-Musayyab رحمه الله and Abu Salama Ibn 'Abdur Rahmaan رحمه الله from Abu Hurayra رضي الله عنه, that the Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم said, 'When the Imam says "aameen", then say aameen, for he whose saying aameen coincides with the angels' saying aameen will be forgiven his previous wrong actions.'"
[Imam Malik رحمه الله] said, "Then Ibn Shihab رحمه الله said, 'The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم used to say aameen.'"

39. Making Mistakes In The Prayer
137. Imam Malik رحمه الله informed us: "az-Zuhri رحمه الله informed us from Abu Salama Ibn 'Abdur Rahman رحمه الله that Abu Hurayra رضي الله عنه said, 'The Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم said, "When one of you stands in prayer, shaytan will come to him and confuse him until he does not know how much he has prayed. When any of you experience that, let him prostrate twice while he is sitting."'"

138. Imam Malik رحمه الله informed us: "Dawood Ibn al-Husayn رحمه الله narrated to us from Abu Sufyan رحمه الله, the mawla of Ibn Abi Ahmad رحمه الله, that Abu Hurayra رضي الله عنه said, 'The Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم prayed the prayer of 'Asr and finished after two rak'at, so Dhul Yadayn رضي الله عنه got up and said, "Has the prayer been shortened, Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم, or have you forgotten?" He صلى الله عليه وسلم replied, "Nothing of the kind has happened." So he said, "Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم, something of the kind did happen." So the Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم turned to the people and said, "Has Dhul Yadayn spoken truly?" And they said yes. So the Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم completed what he still had to pray, said as-salaamu 'alaykum, then prostrated twice while still seated, after saying as-salaamu 'alaykum.'"

139. Imam Malik رحمه الله informed us: "Zayd Ibn Aslam رحمه الله narrated to us from 'Ataa' Ibn Yasar رحمه الله that the Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم said, 'When any of you are uncertain in his prayer, not knowing whether he has prayed three or four, then let him stand up and pray another rak'ah and let him prostrate twice while he is sitting, before concluding. Then if it was a fifth rak'ah which he prayed, he will have done these two prostrations to repair it. If it was a fourth then the two prostrations are to abase shaytan.'"

140. Imam Malik رحمه الله informed us: "Ibn Shihab رحمه الله informed us from 'Abdur Rahman al-A'raj رحمه الله that Ibn Buhaynah رضي الله عنه said, 'The Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم prayed two rak'ahs with us, then he stood up [for the third rak'ah] without sitting and so the people stood up. Then, when he had finished his prayer and we were awaiting his saying as-salaamu 'alaykum, he said Allaahu akbar and prostrated twice while sitting, before saying as-salaamu 'alaykum. Then he finished.'"

141. Imam Malik رحمه الله informed us: "'Afif Ibn 'Amr Ibn al-Musayyab as-Sahmi رحمه الله informed us that 'Ataa Ibn Yasaar رحمه الله said, 'I asked 'Abdullaah Ibn 'Amr Ibn al-'Aas رضي الله عنهما and Ka'b رضي الله عنه about someone who is uncertain whether he has prayed three or four. Both of them said, "Then let him get up and pray another rak'ah, standing, then prostrate twice after praying."'"

142. Imam Malik رحمه الله informed us: "Naafi' رحمه الله narrated to us that when Ibn 'Umar رضي الله عنهما was asked about forgetfulness, he would say, 'One should assume that that which he suspects he left out was simply part of his prayer that he had prayed, but had forgotten about.'"

Imam Muhammad رحمه الله said: "We adhere to this; once he has made to stand up and his posture has altered from sitting, the two prostrations due for an error are incumbent upon him.
Every error for which two prostrations are due, whether because of an excess or a deficiency, the two prostrations for that error are done after saying as-salaamu 'alaykum.
Someone in whom shaytan puts doubt concerning his prayer, he not knowing whether he has prayed three of four, then if this was the first occurrence he should speak [break off his prayer] and start afresh.
If he is afflicted with such doubts often, he should continue based on what he thinks is more probable, and should not continue on the basis of that which he is sure of; for if he does that he will never escape from the erring which shaytan puts in him; there are many narrations concerning this."

143. Imam Muhammad رحمه الله said: "Yahya Ibn Sa'eed رحمه الله informed us that Anas Ibn Malik رضي الله عنه prayed with them on a journey in which he accompanied them. He prayed two rak'at, then went to stand up. Some of his companions said, 'Subhan Allaah', so he returned [to the sitting position]. When he had finished his prayer he prostrated twice. [Yahya Ibn Sa'eed رحمه الله] said, 'I don't know whether it was before saying, "as-salaam" or after.'"

40. Shuffling Gravel In The Prayer And The Reprehensibillity Of Levelling It
144. Imam Malik رحمه الله informed us: "Abu Ja'far al-Qari رحمه الله narrated [this] to us. He said, 'I saw Ibn 'Umar رضي الله عنهما, when he wanted to prostrate, gently levelling the gravel.' Abu Ja'far رحمه الله said, 'Once I was praying and Ibn 'Umar رضي الله عنهما was behind me and I glanced aside, so he put his hand on the back of my neck and squeezed me.'"

145. Imam Malik رحمه الله informed us: "Muslim Ibn Abi Maryam رحمه الله informed us that 'Ali Ibn 'Abdur Rahman al-Mu'awi رحمه الله said, ''Abdullah Ibn 'Umar رضي الله عنهما saw me ruffling the gravel while in prayer, so when I finished he rebuked me and said, "Do what the Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم used to do." I asked, "What did the Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم do?" He answered, "When the Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم sat in prayer, he put his right hand on his right thigh and clasped all of his fingers and pointed with the finger next to his thumb; and put his left hand on his left thigh."'"

Imam Muhammad رحمه الله said: "We adhere to this practise of the Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم and it is the verdict of Imam Abu Hanifah رحمه الله. As for levelling the gravel, there is no harm in levelling it once only but leaving it is better. And that is the verdict of Imam Abu Hanifah رحمه الله.

146. Imam Malik رحمه الله informed us: "'Abdur Rahman Ibn al-Qasim رحمه الله narrated to us from his father from Ummul Mu'mineen 'Aa'isha رضي الله عنها, that she would say in the tashahhud, "At-tahiyyatu't-tayyibatu-s-salwatu'z-zakiyatu lillah. Ashhadu an la ilaha ilallahu wahdahu la shareeka lah, wa ashhadu anna Muhammadan 'abduhu wa rasoolu. [Greetings, good words, prayers and right actions are for Allaah. I witness that there is no god but Allaah alone without partner and I witness that Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم is His slave and messenger. Peace be upon you, O Prophet and the Mercy of Allaah and His blessings. Peace be upon us and upon the right-acting slaves of Allaah. Peace be upon you].
