If you are praying in a congregation then you should not read anything behind the Imam

Allâh سبحانه و تعالى says: ‘And when the Qur'ân is recited, listen to it attentively and remain silent, that you may receive mercy.’ (7:204)

Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah رضي الله عنه says, 'Rasulullah صلى الله عليه وسلم turned around after a salâh in which he had recited loudly. He enquired, "Has any one of you recited (behind me)?" A man replied, "I did." Rasulullah صلى الله عليه وسلم said, "I say: what is it with me? I am being contested for the Qur'ân." After the people heard this from Rasulullah صلى الله عليه وسلم they stopped reciting with him (behind him) in those salâh in which he would pray loudly.'[75]

Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah رضي الله عنه reports that Rasulullah صلى الله عليه وسلم said, 'The Imam has been appointed so that he may be followed. Thus, when he says the takbeer, you say it also, and when he recites remain silent.'[76]

Sayyiduna Abu Musa al Ash'ari رضي الله عنه says, 'Rasulullah صلى الله عليه وسلم taught us that "When you stand up for prayer one of you should lead the rest, and when the Imam recites remain silent."[77]

Abu Wail رضي الله عنه reports that Sayyiduna Abdullah Ibn Mas'ud رضي الله عنه was asked about reciting behind the Imam. He replied, 'Remain silent for the recitation (of the Imam). For indeed there is a duty in salâh for which the Imam is sufficient for you.'[78]

Nafi' رضي الله عنه reports that when Sayyiduna 'Abdullah ibn 'Umar رضي الله عنهما would be asked, 'Should one recite behind the Imam?" he would reply, 'When one of you prays behind the Imam then the Imam's recitation is sufficient for him. When he prays alone he should recite.' Nafi' رضي الله عنه adds, 'Abdullah ibn 'Umar رضي الله عنهما would not recite behind the Imam.'[79]

Sayyiduna Jabir ibn Abdullah رضي الله عنه relates that Rasulullah صلى الله عليه وسلم said, 'One who prays behind an Imam, the recitation of the Imam is sufficient for him.'[80]

The above hadeeth has also been reported from Rasulullah صلى الله عليه وسلم on the authority of the noble Sahâbah Anas,[81] Abdullah bin Abbas,[82] Abu Hurairah,[83] Abu Saeed al Khudri,[84] Abdullah bin Umar,[85] Ali,[86] and Abu al Dardaa [87] رضي الله عنهم أجمعين.

Ahadeeth such as those above stressing the obligation of Sűrah al Fâtihah are for the Imam or the individual, not the muqtadi. Imam Tirmidhi رحمه الله has quoted Imam Ahmad رحمه الله who commented on the above hadeeth (There is no salâh for one...) by saying 'This is if he is alone.'

Wahb bin Kaysan رضي الله عنه reports that he heard Sayyiduna Jabir ibn Abdullah رضي الله عنه say, 'He who prays one rak'ah in which he does not recite Sűrah al Fâtihah has in fact not prayed at all, unless he is behind an Imam.'[88]

Not reciting surah fatiha behind the Imam in any salah is the view of Imam Abu Hanifah, Imam Abu Yusuf, Ibn Abi Layla, Sufyan al Thawri, Hasan bin Hayy, and their followers (رحمة الله عليهم). This is the most famous verdict of the Hanafi fiqh and it is also one of the narrations from Imam Muhammad ibn Hasan al-Shaibani (رحمه الله).

Shaykhul Islam Ibn Taymiyyah رحمه الله writes: ‘Imam Ahmed Ibn Hanbal رحمه الله has narrated the unanimous agreement of the scholars upon the fact that this verse (So, when the Qur’an is recited, listen to it… 7:204) is in relation to Salah. When the Imam is reciting in Salah, then recitation is not Wajib upon the Muqtadi.'

(Fatawa ibn Taymiyyah, vol 2, p168/ al-Fatawa al-Kubra, vol 2, p168)

Musa bin Uqba رحمه الله narrated: ‘The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم, Abu Bakr رضي الله عنه, 'Umar رضي الله عنه and 'Uthman رضي الله عنه would warn against the Muqtadi reciting behind the Imam.’ (Musanad Abdur Razaq, vol 2, p139)

Imam Sha’bi رحمه الله stated: ‘I met 70 Companions (رضي الله عنهم أجمعين) of the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) who participated in Badr, they ALL prohibited from reciting behind the Imam.' (Roohul Ma’ani, vol 9, p152)

Mujahid رحمه الله stated: ‘There was a Companion (رضي الله عنه) from amongst the Ansar (رحمة الله عليهم) who used to recite behind the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) in Salah. This is the very reason this verse (7:204) of the Qur’an was revealed.’ (Tafsir Ahkamul Qur’an, vol 3, p48)

About Mujahid رحمه الله, Sufyan Thawri رحمه الله would say: ‘When the Tafseer of Mujahid (رحمه الله) reaches you, it is sufficient for you (above other Tafaseer).’

Sayyidina 'Abdullah Ibn 'Abbas (رضي الله عنهما) narrated: ‘The reason for the revelation of the verse (7:204) was in relation to the Fard Salah.’ (Tafsir ibn Katheer, vol 2, p281/ Tafsir ibn Jareer, vol 9, p109/ Tafsir ibn Abbas, vol 2, p473)

The Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) prayed: ‘O Allah! Grant him ('Abdullah Ibn 'Abbas رضي الله عنهما) the understanding of Deen and knowledge of the Qur’an.’ (Musnad Ahmed, vol 1, p328)

On one occasion Sayyidina 'Abdullah Ibn Mas'ood (رضي الله عنه) was reading Salah and he heard some people reciting whilst praying behind an Imam. When he completed his Salah, he said (to them): ‘You still do not understand! When the Qur’an is recited, remain silent and listen to it attentively, just as the Qur’an has ordered: ‘So, when the Qur’an is recited, listen to it, and be silent that you may receive Mercy (7:204)’' (Tafsir ibn Jareer, vol 9, p103)

'Abdullah Ibn Mas'ood (رضي الله عنه) possessed deep insight into the meaning of the Qur'an, its method of recitation, and the causes of revelation of its verses. There is no greater scholar of the Qur’an than him amongst the Companions (رضي الله عنهم). He himself stated: "By the One besides Whom there is no Lord, there is no chapter revealed in the Book of Allah, except that I am the most knowledgeable one regarding where is was revealed. There is no verse from the Book of Allah that has been revealed, except that I am the most knowledgeable one regarding the circumstances of its revelations. If I were to learn of anyone possessing more knowledge than me of the Book of Allah who was within reach of a camel's journey, I would mount it (to visit him)." (Sahih al-Bukhari, Sahih Muslim)

The Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) himself stated: ‘O People, Learn the Book of Allaah (سبحانه و تعالى) from 'Abdullah Ibn Mas'ood (رضي الله عنه).’ (Sahih Bukhari, vol 1, p531)

Hudhayfa (رضي الله عنه) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said: "Whatever 'Abdullah Ibn Mas'ood (رضي الله عنه) narrates to you, accept it." (Sunan al-Tirmidhi)

It is reported that the Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) also said: "Learn from four people: 'Abdullah Ibn Mas'ood, Salim the slave of Abu Hudhayfa, Ubay Ibn Ka'b, and Mu'adh Ibn Jabal (رضي الله عنهم)." (Sahih al-Bukhari, Sunan al-Tirmidhi)

Sayyidina Ali رضي الله عنه stated: ‘The person who recites behind the Imam, he is not upon his natural disposition (the Sunnah).’ (Dare Qutani, vol 1, p121/ Sunan Tahawi, p107/ Musanad Abdur Razaq, vol 2, p137)

Ikrama رحمه الله asked Sayyidina 'Abdullah Ibn 'Abbas رضي الله عنهما: ‘Certain people recite behind the Imam in Dhuhr and Asr.’ 'Abdullah رضي الله عنه replied: ‘If it was in my hands, I would pull out their tongues.’ (Sunan Tahawi, p121)
