The program, specially designed for times of disasters and accidents, was initiated by the Ministry of Health in collaboration with the Red Crescent and the Civil Defense. It aims at training nurses on how to deal with environmental, biological and chemical disasters and their psychological effects. The Saudi Authority for Medical Specializations has approved the program, which has been put in place for the third time in Kingdom and would be implemented for the first time during the Haj season. A total of 50 male and female nurses, assigned to serve pilgrims, were trained and successfully graduated. The nurses are qualified to deal with any emergency situation that may arise during the Haj season. Supervisor of the program, Dr. Muhammad bin Hassan Bajubair, who is the head of department of emergencies at the Jeddah health department, commended the program and said the nurses were thoroughly qualified to deal with any emergency. Haya Al-Shammari, a Saudi female nurse from Jazan who attended the training sessions, described the program as very useful and said she had greatly benefited from the training. By BADEA ABU AL-NAJA | ARAB NEWS Published: Oct 28, 2011 01:52 Updated: Oct 28, 2011 01:52 MAKKAH: The Tawafa Establishment for Non-Arab African Pilgrims Thursday began distributing the locations of its tents in Arafat to its 33 field teams there. Accordingly, the teams will erect and prepare a total of 19,000 tents to accommodate more than 195,000 pilgrims from 47 Non-Arab African countries. A member of the establishment's board of directors, Fahd bin Housini Hariri, said the tents that would be assigned for groups of pilgrims would be given serial numbers to ensure the successful implementation of the shuttle service for transporting pilgrims. The establishment will be repeating this program again this year following the success of the system last year. He said the establishment transported more than 140,000 pilgrims during the previous Haj season using the shuttle service. Hariri said the tents in Arafat would be spread in such a way to make it easy for each pilgrim to identify his place of accommodation. “Our pilgrims will be able to find their tents in Arafat easily,” he said. Hariri said four golf carts would be used to transport old and sick pilgrims, who are lost, to their encampments. “The establishment has furnished the tents with about 5,000 rugs and will provide them with more than 10,000 water thermos, 4,500 garbage bins, 4,000 vacuum cleaners, 3,000 fire extinguishers and 5,000 ice containers,” he said. arabnews.com/saudiarabia/article525341.ece

By P.K. ABDUL GHAFOUR | ARAB NEWS Published: Oct 28, 2011 01:53 Updated: Oct 28, 2011 01:55 JEDDAH: Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah has invited the family of Farman Ali Khan, a Pakistani martial arts champion who drowned while saving people during the Jeddah floods of November 2009, to perform Haj, a senior official said. “King Abdullah has instructed to host the family of martyr Farman Ali Khan to perform Haj as guests of King Abdullah,” said Abdullah Al-Mudlaj, executive director of the Program for King Abdullah’s Guests. He said the king’s order to award Farman the King Abdul Aziz Medal of the First Order posthumously and host his family to perform Haj was issued to honor the martyr and his family in appreciation of his heroic act. Khan had saved 14 Saudis during the Jeddah floods. “We have completed all preparations to receive the royal guests to perform Haj. We are awaiting arrival of the first batch and we have arranged for their visits to the Prophet’s Mosque, King Fahd Qur’an Printing Complex and Kaaba Cover Factory,” said Al-Mudlaj. Farman’s relatives and friends in Jeddah have thanked King Abdullah and the Saudi government for the big honor. “It’s an honor for all Pakistanis living in the Kingdom,” said Asghar Khan, his uncle. Farman, who married seven years ago, is survived by his wife and three daughters — Zubaida, Madeeha and Juwairiya. Last March, Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari conferred a gallantry medal posthumously on Farman and his wife received the award during a ceremony at the President’s House in Islamabad on the occasion of the Pakistan National Day. The Pakistan government also gave his family a piece of land in Islamabad and 500,000 rupees. arabnews.com/saudiarabia/article525312.ece

By BADEA ABU AL-NAJA | ARAB NEWS Published: Oct 28, 2011 01:53 Updated: Oct 28, 2011 01:53 MAKKAH: The directorate general of passports Tuesday warned smugglers of domestic pilgrims not carrying official Haj permits that they would be severely punished. The directorate said they would not hesitate to strictly apply the rules and regulations in this regard. It asked citizens transporting local pilgrims to make sure that these pilgrims had genuine Haj permits before allowing them on board. "The punishment includes imprisonment, a fine of SR10,000 for every smuggled pilgrim, or a combination of the two," spokesman of the directorate Lt. Col. Badr Al-Malki told Arab News. He said the nine entry points to Makkah had been manned with trained police force to check pilgrims without permits or with forged ones. Al-Malki said the unpaved roads that were used for smuggling pilgrims in the past had been heavily guarded with enough force to abort any smuggling operation. "They are being combed 24 hours a day by security forces and passport police. There is no way now to smuggle any pilgrims to Makkah through these roads," he said. Al-Malki revealed that smugglers used to conceal male pilgrims in women's dresses or hide them in car trunks and other places. He said they also used big trucks, water tanks and concrete mixing vehicles to smuggle pilgrims. "We have so far foiled a number of smuggling attempts," he revealed. The spokesman said a number of qualified women were employed at the checkpoints to check the Haj permits of female pilgrims. He, however, said so far no forged permits were discovered. Al-Malki asked residents who have to pass through the checkpoints to go to Makkah as part of their jobs to have official letters authorizing them to do so, otherwise they would not be allowed to enter. The spokesman asked citizens who might be considering to smuggle illegal pilgrims to take lessons from last year, when smugglers were fined huge amounts of money. arabnews.com/saudiarabia/article525311.ece

28 October 2011 RIYADH – Over 80 mini-ambulances equipped as mobile intensive care units will treat pilgrims in holy sites. These emergency and field medicine ambulances will act as intensive care units to treat injured persons and transport them to hospitals. The mini-ambulances can reach crowded areas rapidly and could save many lives in the event of a stampede. There are also five regular ambulances to transport patients from health centers and hospitals in Makkah. The holy sites are staffed with 350 doctors and technicians who are trained to respond to emergencies speedily. Dr. Tariq Bin Salim Al-Arnoos, Chairman of the Emergency and Field Medicine Committee, said that emergency sections in Makkah and other holy sites hospitals are ready and the staff is fully trained. He said that workers have been trained in emergency plans and medical evacuation in case of disasters. At least 17 emergency centers at Jamarat Bridge have been equipped with the latest medical equipment and 130 doctors and nurses are working in them providing round-the-clock care. All hospital safety procedures including escape exits, fire fighting and alarm equipment have been tested to ensure they are fully operational. Dr. Al-Arnoos said the Saudi Red Crescent Authority will be provided with an air ambulance service. Five helicopters will operate out of helipads at King Abdullah Medical City, Al-Noor, Arafat General Hospital and the emergency hospitals in Mina. The helipads have been tested to ensure they are fit for Saudi Red Crescent Authority, Army and Civil Defense helicopters. Dr. Al-Arnoos said that 24-hour first-aid and medical services provided by teams would begin actual work on Dhul Hijjah 8. The services will move with the pilgrims from Arafat to Muzdalifa and then to Mina on Al-Nahr Day when pilgrims slaughter their sacrificial animals and the three Tashreeq days. www.saudigazette.com.sa/index...20111028111307

28 October 2011 MAKKAH — One hundred special telephone booths have been set up in the Two Holy Mosques to connect pilgrims seeking information on Haj to Islamic scholars, the General Presidency for Affairs of the Two Holy Mosques said. “The scholars are available around-the-clock to answer any question on Haj rituals,” said a spokesman for the General Presidency. 28 October 2011 MAKKAH — The National Water Company (NWC) has formed an integrated plan to supply water to Makkah and the holy sites. This plan will ensure that the massive water requirements of pilgrims are met. “Work on the two new water treatment plants in south Makkah at Al-Arnanyia Valley has been completed and each plant’s capacity is 250,000 cubic meters daily,” said Abdullah Bin Ahmad Hussein, Director of NWC’s Makkah unit. The old and new Shoibia Water Plants currently supply Makkah with 600,000 cubic meters of water everyday and a reserve is kept full at the desalination plants around the year. In response to the Emir of Makkah‘s wishes, the NWC has coordinated with the authorities involved to ensure a 24-hour water supply for pilgrims. “There are mega water projects being implemented in Makkah and they are expected to be fully operational in the new fiscal year,” Hussein said. www.saudigazette.com.sa/index...20111028111322

28 October 2011 JEDDAH — Desperate pilgrims without Haj permits are dressing up as women in an attempt to sneak into the holy sites. The men were unveiled by policewomen who were looking out for women trying to enter the area without permits. “In the past few weeks, we’ve thwarted several attempts by drivers to smuggle illegal and legal residents into Makkah and the holy sites without Haj permits,” said Colonel Badr Bin Hamad Al-Malik, spokesman for the General Directorate of Passports, according to a report in Al-Madina newspaper. “Passports Department officials and road security guards are checking the IDs of people to see if they are Saudis, expatriates or pilgrims, and those without Haj documents or permits will be sent back from this point.” However he warned that “if officers discover that passengers are illegal aliens or residents without permits the smugglers will be detained and their vehicles impounded”. Authorities have brought in a range of measures to make sure crowds are kept under control. Aerial surveillance units are cooperating with hundreds of passports department patrols in order to round up illegal pilgrims. There are nine checkpoints on the way to Makkah and another at Al-Shumaisi through which all pilgrims must pass before performing their rituals. “Most smugglers use dirt roads believing they are not guarded, however, the passports authorities discovered this trick a long time ago and have kept close watch,” Col. Al-Malik added. www.saudigazette.com.sa/index...20111028111317

28 October 2011 JEDDAH – The Ministry of Health has ordered that planes from countries affected by dengue fever, yellow fever and plague be checked by special medical teams. A team of doctors, health inspectors and nurses will inspect planes at King Abdul Aziz International Airport in Jeddah. They will ensure that planes have appropriate certification and have been sprayed with antivirus disinfectants. “The airport’s healthcare center is providing care to passengers in need of hospitalization. Those in need of surgery are moved to the hospitals by ambulances equipped with doctors,” said Abdulghani Al-Malki, Director of the airport’s Health Control Center. If a pilgrim does not have a medical certificate or has not been vaccinated, then he or she will be given ciprofloxacin as a preventive measure. This treatment has been administered to 142,173 pilgrims so far. “Haj terminal teams will check if pilgrims were vaccinated against meningitis no more recently than 10 days and no longer than three years ago,” Al-Malki said. The Ministry of Health has assigned 612 specialized workers to provide curative and preventive medical services at the airport in Jeddah. It has also provided necessary medicines and supplies, a laboratory, a radiology unit and an infection department. About 568,150 pilgrims have arrived since the beginning of this month. Health authorities at the airport have already vaccinated 254,489 pilgrims against poliomyelitis, he said. www.saudigazette.com.sa/index...20111028111323

''500 pilgrims every 15 minutes'' 28 October 2011 JEDDAH – King Abdul Aziz International Airport has adopted a raft of new measures to ensure that this year’s Haj season is a complete success. Under the new arrangements, 500 pilgrims will be processed every 15 minutes. The plans were made in response to the wishes of King Abdullah, the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques. The King urged authorities “to facilitate the processing of pilgrims and work day and night to make them feel comfortable upon arrival and departure from Saudi Arabia.” Commander of the Passports Department forces, Colonel Khalafallah Obeidullah Al-Twairqi said: “We started preparing for this Haj season last year. We have learned from last year’s mistakes. Airport staff have been trained to provide the highest service to pilgrims.” The Passports Department is on high alert for pilgrims using fake passports and those with criminal records. The pilgrim lounges are equipped with 142 counters each with computer, camera and fingerprint biometrics systems, according to a report in Al-Madina newspaper. Col. Al-Twairqi warned that “if anyone was caught with a counterfeit passport, he will be investigated and deported back to his country”. Staff have been trained to cope with pilgrims of all cultural backgrounds, nationalities, education and literacy levels. They are keen to avoid a repeat of a fiasco where thousands of Egyptians were stranded at the airport a few months ago. www.saudigazette.com.sa/index...20111028111321
