Is mystery shopping halal?

Assalamualikum.

Recently a friend of mine did a part time job as a mystery shopper. A mystery shopper is someone who will pretend to be a customer and may or may not buy the product depending on what the company who has hired the mystery shopper requires. They will check the performance of the staff of the said company.

My friend was told to check the response the salesman gives and record the conversation. His question is, does the money he earns through this way halal? Is it considered spying to record someone [only audio in this case] without any knowledge of them?

Whats the ruling?

mystery shoppers exist to feedback for companies that pay them to check the customer service within their own companies to improve any shortcomings in customer service or customer care.

this is to improve profits, reputation and customer satisfaction.
