Once i was asking Mufti Taqi Shamzai Sahib regarding some scholar, he said : there are some things about him.. i dont know what i said next and he said; Laymen should keep good Gumaan of Ulema.

I understand what brother Jinn is saying..
but brother if someone doesn't know much Ulema.. how is he/she going to know whats the consensus of Ulema?

Khilafat is more than a fancy name and not nothing. It's a certificate (imo). Just not one written in stone. The individual could have hidden his evil traits from the Shaykh or become rotten after getting khilafat.

Hakeem Akhter Saheb was Arifbillah and a Mujaddid of our zamana His status as a highly competent Shaykh is proven by the fact that numerous great Ulama and Mashayikh took bayt on his hands, but he also could have made errors in judgment.

Hakeem Akhter said khilafat is a means of islah. Not that one's islah is done.

I know of one individual who had khilafat from Arifbillah Hazrat Maulana Hakeem Akhter Saheb rahimahullah. Many Ulama and purana saathis didn't and don't respect him. Apparently, when his khilafat was retracted, people spread pamphlets in the masajid to let everyone know. Some people still respect him, they're either naive or in denial.

Something highly over rated to me anyway :)

and for me it would never be the bench mark for authenticity as it means zilch to me

Well to you and others it might be different but that's fine as well brother.

Follow a group/body of scholars and normally you will be safe

Follow known ulama who are accepted by other ulama will be a safe option

There's enough of the above out there to be safe from falling into error

ٱلسَّلَامُ عَلَيكُم وَرَحمَةُٱللَّهِ وَ بَرَكَاتُه

Consider bodies of ulama A, B and C.

Body B acknowledges that A and C are on the Haqq, and they have differences between them.

A remains neutral, and has less differences with B than with C.

But C refutes both bodies' stances and doesn't accept the idea of differences in some issues.

What do brother's advise here?

Jazaakumullaahu khaira.

For ladies, Zaynab Academy is offering a free course related to this subject, titled "Heirs of the Prophets." Registration is still open, I believe. The class is in English.

Simply put no; affiliation itself is not a way to determine authenticity.
Some points to add:
1: Just as the actions of a Muslim does not define the shariat neither do the actions of a Shaykh/Moulana define the shariat.
2: Listen and see the good words and actions of a Shaykh/Moulana/Pious person, don't negate the right advise given. For example a tableeghi brother may tell you that you should read nawaafil whereas he himself does not read his fard. Accept the advise given and don't be that guy that says "molvi saab doesn't do it himself why should we", also take the appropriate steps to advise them of their wrong doing.
3: Don't hold over-expectations and remember that they too are humans; simply because once you open your eyes and start seeing their faults it may hinder your faith.
4: In the same respect don't hero worship anyone except the Prophets (Alyahimus Salaam) and Sahaba (radhialluanhum).
5: No person is exempt from shariah; if you see corruption (for example molestation) report to relevant authorities.
6: Beware of "shaykhs" that ask you to see awra.
7: Sisters send a mahram to ask questions or if no mahram go with elderly women; never go alone. With internet don't hold video discussion with non mahrams.

Saheeh Aalim ki talaash karna

Submitted by admin on Wed, 2015-02-25 16:19
Q: Saray maslak waly yeh kehtay hain ke hum he theek hain, bralvi Kehtay hain hum theek hay, deobandi khud ko theek kehtay hain, aur ici tarah Ahle hadees aur shia bhe, ap muje bataen k mein kis ke baat manon kis ko theek manon?

A: Agar me ne bataya bhi to aap kis tarah samjhenge ke me ne saheeh kaha. Behtar ye he ke koi saheeh aalim jo dunyadaar qisam ka ne ho, sunnat ka ihtimaam karta ho, namaaz ki paabandi jamaat ke saath karte ho, halaal haraam ke masaail me pakke ho, ghalat jagoh aur ghalat logo ke saath ta`alluq ne ho, apne mu`aamalaat aur a`maal akhlaaq me saheeh ho, ayse aalim ki talash karo aur unke peeche chalo.

And Allah Ta'ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
