Our Brother does not know what he is talking about at all!

This is Muhammad ibn Ibrahim Al ash-Sheikh (RA) of Saudia in 1967. They never really had a problem with Digital Pictures in 1960s way before Deobandees even started discussing Television.

Those who don't know Shaykh (RA) was Grand Mufti of Saudia from 1950s and under whose leadership Television was introduced in the Kingdom. Some of the Ulama did disagreed culminating in the famous attack of Saudi TV in 1966 (discussion of a different thread).

This debate on Modernisation carried on until King Faisal was killed a year or so later.

Terrorist attacks of 1960's weren't whether TV was Haram or not but more about the Pace of Change in the Kingdom and growing American influence. The "Wahabees" didn't like their grip loosening on Society (just like what all the Deobandees have been saying).

In the middle of 1970's is when we the first serious challenge to the Deobandi position by Arab (Ulama) and I have posted one of the episodes where Allamah Yusuf Binnori (RA) was challenged and he had to back down from declaring it Haram (and rely on personal Taqwa).

I fully back the position of our Akabir on position of prohibition and anyone who disagrees I suggest for them to spend some time in London in some of the Museums and see how photography impacted society and also see that it was Shiahs who introduced images into Muslim Society.

Digital Images are NOT TASWEER and our Ulama have missed the Boat on leading from the front. If you look at the Arab Media there are tons of legitimate (Islamic) Channels with legitimate Ulama (alongside JUNK and POISON) while we got nothing (quality) even from those Ulama who don’t consider digital images to be Haram because for decades we have been held back due to internal debates and discussions while Baatil has marched on.

  1. Our Ulama opposed Maulana Maududi (RA) and it didn't really work and he remains influential (globally)
  2. Our Ulama opposed Dr Israr Ahmed (RA) and it didn't really work and he remains influential (globally)
  3. Our Ulama opposed Dr Farhat Hashmi and it didn't really work and she has serious influence among young Asian women
  4. Our Ulama opposed Dr Zakir Naik but it was BJP led Government which put a stop to it, otherwise nothing much was happening
  5. In the West our Ulama opposed Mufti Menk and Nauman Ali Khan and look where they are to the point where Deobandi Media is promoting them now.

As I have been saying for over a decade these FATWAAS DO NOTHING unless and until you have a unified position and everybody is on the same page (which Deobandees are not).

In a nutshell and succinctly put, this issue has only two salient points which need to be discussed:

  1. If a scene or interaction is Haram (impermissible) in real life, it is Haram (impermissible) in any type of still or recorded imagery or motion.
  2. If the stored image (or recording) is on an electronic medium such as a laptop, phone or memory card it is not considered “Tasweer” as mentioned in the narrations of Nabi (Sallallaho Alaihe Wassallam).

All Ulama agree on point 1.

A large number of Ulama (scholars) agree with point 2 while others disagree. If you disagree with and choose to follow the opinion of those Ulama, there are no issues. This article is not intended to force you to abandon your position. This article does make the point that there are plenty of Ulama who don’t consider digital images as “Tasweer” and deem them to be permissible. Taqleed is obligatory upon a layman and there is no chastisement upon the laymen who choose to follow and make Taqleed of any of the Ulama quoted in this article.
