Taken from the HMC thread.
I was thinking about this after reading the thread by Daywalk3r on halal joints.

My uncle once was given a cat to look after whilst his neighbour went away on holiday.
My uncle fed the cat with Halal meat left overs and also fresh cuttings of meat.
When the neighbour returned he was give the cat back. The cat owner was confused as the cat wouldn't eat any thing and he thought the cat was sick. He asked my uncle what he was feeding the cat. So he told him that he fed him Halal meat only. So the cat owner tried to give the cat Halal meat and the cat ate very well. He was suprised but couldn't believe the cat was able to tell, so he gave the cat Haram meat. The cat refused to eat it, and when Halal meat was given, it ate again.
SubhanAllah.

Mufti Ebrahim Desai wrote:
It is Haraam to consume Haraam food. Similarly, it is Haraam to take any benefit from the Haraam food. To buy or sell Haraam food is also Haraam.
Therefore, it is not permissible to buy Haraam food to feed the cat. Halaal meat should be used. (Fataawa Rahimiyyah vol.10 pg.138; Darul Ishaat)

However from the salafi site we find the following.
Quote:
Praise be to Allaah.
Firstly: It is permissible to feed dead meat to animals that are not eaten, such as dogs and cats, and that includes pork, which is dead meat in all cases, whether it is slaughtered or it died without being slaughtered.
Al-Nawawi (may Allaah have mercy on him) said in al-Majmoo’ (4/336): It is permissible to feed dead meat to dogs and birds, and to feed impure things to animals. End quote.
Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyah (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: It is permissible to put out fires with wine, and to feed dead meat to falcons and hawks, and to clothe animals with impure cloths, and to use impure oils in lamps, according to the more well known of the two scholarly opinions, which is also the better known view of Ahmad. That is because using impure things is a way of using them up without causing harm. End quote from al-Fataawa al-Kubra (1/433).
Secondly:
It is not permissible to sell pork, whether on its own or mixed with other things, because of the report narrated by al-Bukhaari (2236) and Muslim (1581) from Jaabir ibn ‘Abd-Allaah (may Allaah be pleased with him), that he heard the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) say during the year of the conquest when he was in Makkah: “Allaah and His Messenger have forbidden the sale of alcohol, dead meat, pork and idols.” Al-Nawawi (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: It is permissible to feed dead meat to carnivores but it is not permissible to sell it. End quote from al-Majmoo’ (9/285).
Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymeen (may Allaah have mercy on him) was asked about cans of cat food that contain pork – is it permissible to buy them and feed them to cats?
He replied: If that is by buying the cans then it is not permissible, because it is not permissible to pay for pork and buy it. But if he finds it thrown away and feeds it to his cat, there is nothing wrong with that. And Allaah knows best.
Based on that, it is not permissible to work in a food factory where pork or other kinds of dead meat are used, because that is helping in sin and haraam things, as it is manufactured with the aim of selling it, which is haraam as stated above. Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):
“Help you one another in Al‑Birr and At‑Taqwa (virtue, righteousness and piety); but do not help one another in sin and transgression. And fear Allaah. Verily, Allaah is Severe in punishment”
[al-Maa’idah 5:2]
And Allaah knows best.

There's a market for halal pet food right here in the UK.
I don't believe it.

Oh and by the way, they are HFA approved. Lol

Allah ordered MANkind to consume Halal, Not animals......... I have a cat and feed it normal cat food.
Why would I want to over complicate my life by feeding it halal food only, when Allah has not burdened me with that responsibilty? Why would one complicate the deen of Islam?
It dont make sense..... We have have been ordered to treat animals with love and affection and to be fair.

Have you seen the prices? OMG! what a rip off, these guys just wanted to get rich quick!
And its HFA (Haram Food Authority) so why pay a premium for non halal food?
I have never heard of this from a quran and sunnah perspective so aint this a biddah?
Quote:
.... newly invented matter, every newly invented matter is a bid'ah, every bid'ah is a going astray, and every going astray leads to the hell-fire.
But then, if your chinese and intend to eat your cat, then it would be wise to feed it hala only, lol hahahahahaha

I understand your point. That's why I had posted 2 different fatwas. Clearly the first one makes more sense.
I don't have a pet, but was very interested to understand. Yes the prices are pathetic, but at the end of the day we don't eat our soap, yet we make sure its halal! Even HFA soap would do right. Lol.

Good response
So pet food must be Halaal kr it doesnt matter? Talk about two opposing rulings. So according to second ruling, it is also permissible to buy, promote and make profit from Haraam meat for consuming as long as a Human doesn't eat it which is hardly a guarantee at time of sale?

With regards to the salafi Fatwa, I think that it is based on animals that are already dead, as you would find back in the days, and hence it would be permisable as they are not paying for it.
But then again, the Salafi do admit taking things literally.
Another thing I find strange is that who in the world would want to touch wine, even if it is to put the fire out. In my books I wouldn't buy, sell, move, touch, fill, empty, stack, make, smell, taste, drink, collect, deliver or have anything to do with alcoholic drinks.
I also disagree with Shaykh Ibn Taymiyah (unless he has been misunderstood by me) because, if its not permisable to sell haram meat, how can it be permisable to buy. He makes it clear with the Hadith “Allaah and His Messenger have forbidden the sale of alcohol, dead meat, pork and idols.” So would it be permisable to buy alcohol, dead meat, pork or idols. There is another Hadith that mentions the kufr in purchasing an idol.
Shaykh Uthaymeens responce was much better.
I think the salafi answer could have been layed out better and the conclusion would be as simple as Mufti Desai's answer.

I emailed them with two simple questions, let me see if there's a reply and I'll post it here. Otherwise I'll post my email and consider their reply to be "No Comment" which speaks volumes

Also, it's amazing how this topic pops up a week after we get a kitten. So far, he's not had any Haraam meat food and the packet things we've ordered to try is fish so there's no concern of Haraam as long as the mixture doesn't contain any other Haraam.
I did pick up dry food on day one as there was nothing else (unexpected) and I'm not too sure if it's Haraam because he really doesn't like it. Hmm, maybe it's Haraam (considering the other topic where cats (or was it animals) prefer Halaal meat over Haraam.

Did the ingredients have any E numbers ;)
Alhumdulillah, The Prophet (saw) loved cats. My son wants one too, so I told him to first look after himself properly then I shall consider thinking about it. That ended that very quick. Although my son was quick to catch up on the word "think" and said "Forget it, when I sort my self out, your thinking will be 'no' anyway."
