Great mufti. Really. He is an expert when it comes to food related questions and there are not many people who can answer such questions like him. We are very fortunate to have him amongst us. May Allah reward him well.

All current and future generations of the UK muslins are indebted to him on alot of things he has done especially his indepth knowledge and research on halal and haraam foods.

Most ulama now currently involved in halal/haraam fields in the UK and those to come in the future will find his work of tremedous importance. I remember the first Halal Food Guide book that came out years back. His halal/haraam and UK foods knowledge and research goes back to at least 1993 if not before then.

He has laid the foundations for furure generations of UK ulama to carry on his endeavors. May allah except his efforts for a means of guidance for many.

Assalaamu-alaikum WW,

Alhumdulillah, it is the grace and favours of Allah (swt) that we are able to benefit from his true friends, may Allah (swt) grant us the tawfique to respect all our akhaabireen, Aameen.

Hadhrat Mufti Abdullah Sahib (D.B) is involved in many projects here in Gloucester, the Foodguide being just one of them. In addition Hadhrat is the Principal of the Gloucester Islamic Secondary School for Girls which has now been running for well over a decade as well as the Al-Ashraf Nursery. Just a year ago, the Al-Ashraf Primary School was started with a Reception class and from September, the next class will also begin Insha-Allah. Again, this is done under the guidance and instruction of Hadhrat Mufti Sahib.

Not only this but he continues to teach at the local Maktab, whether it be basic kitaabs or students preparing themselves for Aalim class - Hadhrat does the first 3 years of the Aalim course for students who wish to continue onto a Darul-Uloom.

Hadhrat himself, comes from a pious family, his Grandfather serving many of the the Pious Elders of his generation. Hadhrat completed his Hifz locally in Gloucester, and thereafter became a student at Darul-Uloom Azaadville, South Africa. After graduating from there, his heart directed him to Darul-Uloom Deoband, where he redid his final year of Aalim class and then completed his Iftah there, under many of the noble Ustaads at Deoband.

On his return Hadhrat was requested to teach at Darul-Uloom Bury, which he did for a short time, but realising the importance and need of his services to his locality, and from the many, many requests of certain people of foresight in Gloucester, he humbly requested to return to serve his home community.

Hadhrat's 24 hour life is devoted to serving the Deen, and he continues to guide and help people reform their lives. A pious, humble and sincere servant, Hadhrat's love for the Akhaabireen, Elders, Mashaaikh and Ulema is immense. Whenever, such luminaries have passed through Gloucester, Hadhrat is at their service. Despite his lofty status, Hadhrat serves the 'Buzrougs' with the utmost affection and love.

Alongside Hadhrat, there has been a number of sincere associates who have helped him with the various projects that he is initiated as well. May Allah (swt) also reward these sincere persons, and may He 'lengthen Hadhrat's shadow over us' Aameen

Last Updated: 25/01/2010

These are Haraam

M&Ms Peanut- E120 SEE BELOW

M&Ms Chocolate- E120

M&Ms Crispy- E120

ALL THE FOLLOWING ARE HALAAL

Please see the notes next to some of them, to highlight the issue of calf rennet and alcoholic flavourings at the bottom. Some may feel they wish to refrain them.

Calf Rennet Clarification:

Rennet per se, is not impermissible.

It is permissible to eat cheese which has rennet from calf rennet though

praiseworthy to refrain from due to a slight difference of opinion viz:

Is Whey Rennet Haraam? (no!)

www.gmwa.org.uk/foodguide2/index.php?page=viewquestion&am...

* contains calf based rennet

*? Possibly contains calf rennet as manufactured on the continent

Alcoholic Flavourings Clarification:

Alcohols used as a carrier for food colourings and flavourings are permissible as long as they are not sourced from dates or grapes.

Carmine, also called Crimson Lake, Cochineal, Natural Red 4, C.I. 75470, or E120, is a pigment of a bright red color obtained from the carminic acid produced by some scale insects, such as the cochineal and the Polish cochineal, and is used as a general term for a particularly deep red color of the same name. Carmine is used in the manufacture of artificial flowers, paints, crimson ink, rouge, and other cosmetics, and is routinely added to food products such as yoghurt and certain brands of juice, most notably those of the ruby-red variety.

Production

Carmine may be prepared from cochineal, by boiling bugs in water to extract the carminic acid and then treating the clear solution with alum, cream of tartar, stannous chloride, or potassium hydrogen oxalate; the coloring and animal matters present in the liquid are thus precipitated. Other methods are in use in which egg white, fish glue, or gelatine are sometimes added before the precipitation.

The quality of carmine is affected by the temperature and the degree of illumination during its preparation, sunlight being requisite for the production of a brilliant hue. It also differs according to the amount of alumina present in it. It is sometimes adulterated with cinnabar, starch and other materials; from these the carmine can be separated by dissolving it in ammonia. Good carmine should crumble readily between the fingers when dry.

Carmine lake is a pigment obtained by adding freshly precipitated alumina to decoction of cochineal.

Carmine can be used as a staining agent in microbiology, as a Best's carmine to stain glycogen, mucicarmine to stain acidic mucopolysaccharides, and carmalum to stain cell nuclei. In these applications, it is applied together with a mordant, usually an Al(III) salt.
