The Lost Female Legacy – Womens Scholars in Islam

The Lost Female Legacy – Womens Scholars in Islam

This one day course will briefly survey 14 centuries of history to unravel the central role women had in preserving the Prophet’s teaching. Shaykh Mohammad Akram Nadwi will discuss how, within the bounds of modesty in dress and manners, women routinely attended and gave classes in the major mosques and madrasas, travelled intensively for ‘the knowledge’, transmitted and critiqued hadith, issued fatwas, etc. You will learn from this fascinating history of women scholarship how some of the most renowned scholars among men have depended on, and praised, the scholarship of their women teachers. You will also appreciate how women scholars enjoyed considerable public authority in society as a matter of norm. This is an essential course for brothers and sisters to understanding the role of women in Islamic society, their past achievement and future potential.

Shaykh Akram Nadwi has authored a 40-Volume encyclopaedia in Arabic, detailing the teachings and works of over 8000 women scholars, allowing him to rediscoverthrough his decade long research what was once the prominent status of women in the world of Islamic Scholarship.

Shaykh Mohammad Akram Nadwi, born in Lucknow, is a graduate of the world renowned Nadwatul Ulama in India, where he studied and taught Shari’ah. He is a Muhaddith of the highest calibre, specialised in Ilm ul-rijal, the science of Hadith narrators. He has Ijaza (licenses) from many of the prominent scholars in recent times, including Shaykh Abul Hasan Ali Al-Nadwi, Shaykh Abu Fattah Abu Ghuddah and Shaykh Yusuf Al-Qaradawi.

Shaykh Akram Nadwi completed a doctorate in the Arabic language and has authored and translated over 30 titles on Language, Jurisprudence, Qur’an and Hadith. In May 2010 he completed the monumental 57-volume work on the lives of female scholars of Hadith in Islamic history (website here: http://www.al-muhaddithat.org/ ), which he has presently reduced to 40-volumes for publication.

He is the recipient of the Allama Iqbal prize for his contribution to Islamic Thought. He lives with his wife and six daughters in Oxford where he is currently a research fellow at the Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies, Oxford University. He is a dedicated teacher and mentor, with regular classes across the UK, and lectures in Europe, US, Asia and the Middle East. Shaykh Akram is widely recognised as one of Western Europe’s leading Islamic scholars.

Don’t miss your opportunity to learn in detail about the lives of some of the most ilusstrouois womens in islam!
