Abul Qasim al-Baghawi رحمه الله arrived in Madeenah while on his journey to perform Hajj. He was accompanied by Abu Bakr al-Admi رحمه الله, who was a fine reciter of the Qur'an. As they entered the blessed precincts of the Masjidun Nabawi صلى الله عليه وسلم, they noticed an old blind man addressing a large group of people. As they listened, they realised that the old man was relating many incidents and narrations which were false and misleading.

al-Baghawi رحمه الله immediately said, "I must prevent him from continuing."

But, one of his companions advised, "You are not in Baghdad, where people know you and accept your advice. Here, the gathering is large and you are relatively unknown. You would have more success if you advise Abu Bakr al-Admi رحمه الله to commence reciting the Qur'an."

al-Baghawi رحمه الله agreed with the idea and instructed Abu Bakr al-Admi رحمه الله to commence reciting. He had not even completed reciting the isti'adhah when people began deserting the gathering of the old man to listen to his recitation. Soon the old man had no audience at all and was left with no option but to terminate his address with the words, "This is how bounties are removed."
[al-Bidayah wan-Nihayah, vol 15, p239]

Evil is easily defeated when challenged with the truth, presented tactfully. [Pearls from the Path]
