Indian state bans beef, introduces jail time for possession

03 March 2015 14:23 GMT

India's western state of Maharashtra has introduced a ban on beef so strict that even possession could land you in jail for five years, media reports and the chief minister said Tuesday.

The country's Hindu majority considers cows sacred, and several states already ban their slaughter.

But the latest measures in Maharashtra -- home to India's commercial centre Mumbai -- go even further, making sale or possession of beef an offence punishable by a five-year jail term or a 10,000 rupee ($160) fine.

The Indian Express newspaper said the measures became law after President Pranab Mukherjee gave his assent to a legal amendment passed by the state parliament two decades ago.

The measures include a ban on the slaughter of bulls and bullocks, hitherto legal with a vet's certificate, although it will still be legal to slaughter buffalo.

Maharashtra's chief minister Devendra Fadnavis tweeted his thanks to the president, saying "our dream of ban on cow slaughter becomes a reality now".

Right-wing Hindu groups in India have long demanded a complete ban on the slaughter of all cattle, citing religious scriptures.

The main players in the beef industry are Muslims, the country's largest religious minority, who make up some 13 percent of India's 1.25-billion population.

Maharashtra state is ruled by Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party in alliance with the far-right Shiv Sena party.

New Delhi, 4 Nov 2014 :

Muslims are unnecessarily blamed maligned and targeted for excessive meat consumption while the fact is that Christians and Jews are the highest meat consumer communities. The world’s largest beef meat exporter country is Brazil followed by India, Australia, USA and UK.

When we see this matter in an Indian perspective we would be surprised to know that out of six largest meat exporters of India four are Hindus. In spite of these facts Muslims are harassed and targeted and as beef eaters. In several cases they are beaten severely by Hindutva brigades and put behind bars by the police. Many times communal riots took place only due to this blame game. These communal elements become more active during Eid ul Azha festival only to communalize the atmosphere.

But the same Hindutva brigades forget the Hindu animal sacrifice festivals which get media attention world over in which thousands of animals are killed ruthlessly.

There’s a ritual of sacrificing cow which is still performed in many temples of Himachal Pradesh, Surprisingly the high court had to intervene to stop those animal killings in the premises of Mandir specially at the Pashupatinath Temple

Recently in Nepal around a quarter million animals were killed during Gadhimai Hindu rituals festival .

Ironically many Hindu Businessmen are the largest beef suppliers of India. Following are the four largest beef exporters who are Hindus.

1) Al-Kabeer Exports Pvt. Ltd.
Its owner name: Mr. Shatish &Mr. Atul Sabharwal
Add: 92, Jolly makers, Chembur Mumbai 400021

2) Arabian Exports Pvt.Ltd.
Owner’s name: Mr.Sunil Kapoor
Add: Russian Mansions, Overseas, Mumbai 400001

3) M.K.R Frozen Food Exports Pvt. Ltd.
Owner’s name Mr. Madan Abott.

4) P.M.L Industries Pvt. Ltd.

Hindu mob lynches Muslim rumored to have killed a cow

NEW DELHI: A Hindu mob killed a Muslim man in India over rumors that he butchered a cow, unleashing violence that police on Wednesday blamed on tension fueled by politicians who seek strict protection of an animal many Hindus consider sacred.

While many members of India’s majority Hindu community see cows as holy, beef is widely eaten by Hindus in parts of the south, as well as by members of lower castes and minority Muslims and Christians.

Tougher measures to safeguard cows are often used as a rallying call by politicians seeking to win Hindu votes, sometimes leading to Hindu-Muslim riots.

Mohammad Akhlaq, a blacksmith, died after being kicked and beaten with stones by at least 10 men in the town of Dadri, 50 km (30 miles) from the capital, New Delhi, on Monday night.

A larger group had earlier gathered outside his home, accusing his family of secretly eating beef.

“I screamed and shouted to tell the mob that we did not eat beef, and they should stop beating my father and my brother, but they pushed me away,” his daughter, Sajida Saifi, who watched the attack helplessly, told Reuters.
Akhlaq’s son was taken to hospital with severe injuries.

The murder triggered clashes between Hindus and Muslims in the town, and extra police were deployed to keep the peace.
The rhetoric about cow protection had emboldened some people to act as vigilantes, said police officer Anurag Kumar, who is investigating the lynching.

“The incident is shocking,” he said. “The Hindu mob felt they had a license to kill.”

India is the world’s largest exporter of beef and its fifth biggest consumer, but Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government wants a nationwide ban on cow slaughter and the beef trade, which is run mostly by Muslims.

It has clamped down on the illegal trade of cattle with Muslim-majority neighbor Bangladesh, and two states ruled by Modi’s party have tightened laws to protect cows.

Police arrested six of the 30 people accused in Akhlaq’s murder, and sent a sample of meat from his home for forensic tests to check if it was beef.

Eating beef is not illegal in India’s populous northern state of Uttar Pradesh, where Dadri is located, although the slaughter of cows is banned.

But even if the family had been eating beef, that was no justification for murder, Saifi said.
“I saw my father being killed and no one came to save him,” she said. “How can eating meat or beef become such a big crime?”

What has happened in Dadri has shook India. Many secular leaders, writers, intellects are fighting to get justice to victim and his family. Recently as protest, two intellects have returned indian national awards presented to them.

As muslims should we not try to support these Hindu secular persons.

Beef eating is not a part of Islam, nor it is compulsory. We must stop eating beef wherever it is banned. But I have witnessed a few zealots, as adventure, bring beef, eat and then boast, then invite trouble.

Normally here in India Muslims eat beef because it is cheap, they can eat less sheep/goat/chicken/fish meat available for the same price.

Communal elements are trying to poison the minds of silent majority who believe in communal harmony. So we must not play into their hands.

So stop defending beef eating.

They have done in Maharashtra, the result is; cows are being offered by farmers for price as low as 2,000 rupees. But Muslims are rejecting it.

Darul uloom Deoband also is against slaughter of cows in sensitive places. If required for whole of India.

Surah Al-Anaam, Verse 142:

And of cattle (He created) beasts of burden and those which are fit for slaughter only; eat of what Allah has given you and do not follow the footsteps of the Shaitan; surely he is your open enemy.

(English - Shakir)

in another verse we are told that Allah created the cattle for our benefit,
I.e . milk, leather/clothing etc.

you do know that these cows are worshipped right?

We are not discussing here whether Cow is god or not, nor whether beef is halal or haram.

I ask you, if there is an epidemic, all cows are affected with "foot and mouth" disease. Under this condition it is halal or haram to eat beef (cow's meat).

Read Ma'ariful Quran on "Why Rasulullah SAS didn't rebuild and bring hatheem inside Ka'abah, even though he was right and he desired it".

If there is an epidemic of diseases, then we go from one taqdeer to another, just like Sayidina Umar رضي الله عنه did.

You'll also find it in on my thread on Makkah, Madinah and its history.

We also don't make something that is permitted for us to be haram, just like when the prophet (saw) said he wouldn't eat honey again and was corrected.

And our ulemah taught us that when there is epidemic it is haram to eat meat. And regarding taqdeer and tawakkul, I take guidance from sermons by Mufti Taqi Uthmani DB.

Prophet SAS was not corrected and to bring hatheem into Ka'bah.

Of course I didn't mean we eat it, apologies for the confusion.

If there is a disease, we leave it until there is no disease.

We use alternatives in the meantime.

My comments about the honey is not to be mixed up with the Hateem, Jzk.

The comment was purely on permitted and non permitted in relation to food.

Surah At-Tahrim, Verse 1:

O Prophet! why do you forbid (yourself) that which Allah has made lawful for you; you seek to please your wives; and Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.

Hindus are an ignorant lot. Stupid zombies who are so gullible that they are taken for a ride so easily by politicians who themselves are illiterate filled with greed and lust.

Hindu scriptures like vedas , their law book called manusmriti and passages in mahabharata clearly show that beef was integral part of the diet of hindus, brahmins and lower class alike. Bulls, goats, sheep, and also cows were slaughtered as written in hindu scriptures.

Hindus have an appetite to hate muslims , have time to go on rioting in the name of religion, but such a shame, they dont have eyes to read their own holy books.
