EDIT: UPDATE 2017 See here for latest HALAL response.

Salaam,

Since it is the season of Fasting, many families are preparing food for Ramadhan (Iftar).

Loads of people buy ready made pastry sheets or Samosa sheets etc (sorry I cant recall the name)

JusRol Pastry

Question

Recently I was alerted that jus roll pre-rolled pastry contains ethanol in the ingredients. The source of ethanol i.e synthetic or brewed is unclear. Is it permissible to consume such pastry once baked? If it is haram do you have to discard it or could you give to non-muslim freinds?

Thank you for contacting us to enquire about our Jus-Rol Chilled Puff Sheet 320g product.

We are most interested to learn of your nutritional request. Please be advised that the minimal quantity of alcohol in the Jus Rol Chilled Puff Sheet is added to the dough to maintain the shelf-life of the product. We would like to assure you that the percentage of alcohol present in this product is very low (approximately 1%), with the majority of the alcohol evaporating during cooking. Alternatively, you could use our Jus Rol Frozen Puff sheets or our All Butter range which currently do not contain any alcohol.

Please be aware that all our products are subject to reformulation at any given time. Consequently, we would recommend that you always check the ingredient lists on the packs of all our products prior to purchase to determine product content.

We trust that the information we have been able to provide is reassuring and has fully answered your query, however, if you require any additional information about any of our products please do not hesitate to contact us again.

We do hope you will continue to purchase and enjoy our products again in the future.

Yours sincerely,

In the Name of Allah, the Inspirer of Truth.
Assalamu Alaikum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuh

JazakAllah for your inquiry.

Ethanol is listed as an added ingredient in Jusrol pastry therefore we consider it Haraam.

A lot of other jus-rol products contain alcohol. If you check the ingredients although it states suitable for vegetarians, alcohol and not ethanol is clearly written in the ingredients.

Yeh I think that's the case, because someone bought me the croissants ready to bake...that normally stays in fridge section....and it clearly had alcohol written in the ingredients.
