I was sent an image of a Halal Certificate this morning and was asked if they were legit.

A simple google search showed otherwise! Becareful.

The certificate I was sent was from North London.

I've now just been informed that the certificate sent to me was from the suppliers of Clapton Girls School, London. a highly populated Muslim area.

disclaimer: I am not suggesting that the food is haram nor confirming that the certificate I was sent is 100% from said school!

I posted as I received it and looked into to it more and found more information. I'm posting as I hear and when I hear. (like with any other news...more to follow...unconfirmed reports etc etc etc)

The least I could do is share with others who do like to take things more seriously.

“O you who believe! Take care of your ownselves. If you follow the (right) guidance [and enjoin what is right (Islamic Monotheism and all that Islam orders one to do) and forbid what is wrong (polytheism, disbelief and all that Islam has forbidden)] no hurt can come to you from those who are in error”
[al-Maa’idah 5:105]

The Prophet (saw) said: “Part of a person’s being a good Muslim is his leaving alone that which does not concern him.” But in this instance, after the thread was started, it did concern me even more as it was a school my daughter was going start in this month and I also have family there too

On the authority of Abu Sa’eed al-Khudree رضي الله عنه who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (saw) say, “Whosoever of you sees an evil, let him change it with his hand; and if he is not able to do so, then [let him change it] with his tongue; and if he is not able to do so, then with his heart — and that is the weakest of faith.” [Muslim]

Again, I am not saying the food is not Halal just like we say about other Halal certified outlets, What I am saying is that the certificates are fake in this instance.

UPDATE: This was from a Clapton Girls School parent and say that the company who supply the food is www.imsofsmithfield.com/halal/ who were certified by these fake certifiers However, this company no longer use this certificate and self certify (saying it as I heard it). See also what they is Halal www.imsofsmithfield.com/halal-food-guide/#more-826

This is from and on behalf of the concerned parent who raised the question.

From the Supplier's website

Halal Food Guide

You may have heard of the term halal many times, but not have much idea of what it means unless you’re a Muslim. The word halal comes from an Arabic word which means ‘lawful’. The opposite of halal, and therefore unlawful or prohibited, is haram.

halal meat london

This is a guide for those with no knowledge, and are using halal meat for the first time, perhaps you’re a restaurant and you’re catering to a Muslim audience, or perhaps you’re entertaining friends at home and you need halal food, if this is the case, then our specially prepared guide will give you a good idea of what is acceptable and what is not. You’ll be able to prepare and cook the food with confidence giving both you and your guests peace of mind.

Meat

Meat is probably the one item that you may be concerned with if you’re preparing a meal for Muslim guests. Halal meat needs to have been slaughtered in a particular way prior to cooking, this is by cutting its jugular veins and not its spinal cord. Strictly speaking you don’t need to know this, but we do, because it’s our job to know, all you need to be assured of is that when you buy halal meat from us it will have followed these strict guidelines.

halal food guide

Animals to be slaughtered are herbivorous but this does not include horses, and no omnivorous animals including dogs, pigs or any carnivorous or scavenger animals.

Seafood

Basically, what is allowed under halal? To start with most vegetables and fruit are allowed but not those which have been mixed with alcohol. Fish products are acceptable except for amphibious ones, such as lobster, crab, shrimp and prawns.

Dairy products

All dairy products can be eaten and are considered halal, as long as they don’t contain any animal content which has come from a non halal source. Cheese will be prohibited, because it may contain rennet from a non-halal calf. Eggs are halal as long as they’ve been cooked in a halal substance.

wholesale meats

With that in mind, it’s seems natural then to assume that anything that’s suitable for vegetarians will be considered halal unless it’s been cooked in alcohol. Vinegar is halal too, although it’s been fermented in alcohol, this can be confusing, but if in doubt don’t use it.

Cooking substances

If you cook halal food in a haram substance it will make the food haram. As an example, if you were to cook halal meat in a vegetable oil which had been previously used to cook with non-halal meat then it renders it haram. Basically, be careful of any substance or implement you use to cook your halal food, because whatever it’s been used to cook with before may have been used to prepare food and substances which are considered haram. It’s best really then to only use fresh implements which haven’t been used on anything else, and the same with oils and sauces, freshly prepared specifically for a halal meal is the safest option.

These were the certifiers of IMS
PDF: loveschoolmeals.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/IMS-of-S...

As you can see it is now expired. I have posted the source that says the certificate is a fake and I also have confirmation from Malaysia via email stating that the person giving these certificates is a fake.

Further update.

IMS still have a certificate by these fake certifiers which has not yet expired.

An email from IMS confirms that they are now certified by Global Halal Solutions. However, further checks show that the owner of this company is the same person who has been issuing the fake certificates.

Owner of the company in final attachment and can be seen here beta.companieshouse.gov.uk/company/10816694/officers

Further details will be needed about the certifier as he himself may be supplying Halal food but wrongfully using legitimate sources as his proof of Halal and misleading people.

I have investigated this supply chain. The main organisation was the compass group under chartwells who provide catering for a large proportion of the UK's schools, hospitals, universities and many other organisations. They use IMS of Smithfield (the meat and poultry supplier). They were originally certified by MHCT based in Malaysia then through the partner office MHCT - UK. I originally investigated their supply chain as I did not believe they complied with the claimed MS1500:2009 Malaysian Halal standards. The MS1500:2009 standards removed mechanical slaughter of poultry, hence the certificates originally issued by MHCT and MHCT-UK are false. I addressed these issues in a meeting with Chartwells and IMS Directors a few months ago. It was apparent that they are aware of the dispute between MHCT and MHCT-UK and they confirmed that they have never sought any other opinions on halal other than from MHCT. I advised them of the differences of opinion represented by the Malaysian Shafi'i school of fiqh, Saudi Hanbali and UK primarily Hanafi school of fiqh a and the issues this causes with overseas certification. The owner of MHCT-UK recently registered the organisation mentioned above "Global Halal Solutions". This is a smoke screen to hide several years of fraud. They have been issuing fraudulent certificates for several years.

Proper Halal Certification is must to be sure of food being up to sharia standard. Now many non Muslims are also focused on halal food because of the hygiene and health benefits.
